Every dollar donated helps us preserve & share more stories from our community.
There are two substantial ways that you can support the work we do at Western Neighborhoods Project: making tax-deductible donations and volunteering your time.
Join the WNP Family
Whether you wish to make a one-time, yearly, or monthly contribution, every tax-deductible donation allows us to preserve and share more stories from our community. Make a contribution now to be part of this collective effort.
Tax-deductible donations of $60 or more automatically receive all the benefits of being part of the WNP family, such as:
- Our quarterly magazine, Outside Lands, delivered in full color right to your doorstep and/or inbox.
- Discounts on WNP events.
- Access to special family happenings.
- And, of course, the satisfaction of supporting your local history nonprofit! But, of course, you can get that at any donation level…
Your annual support to join the WNP family can be paid monthly or yearly:
- Monthly: spread the cost of your contribution out over the course of the year. These recurring payments are automatically deducted from your account each month for as long as you wish to support our work. Automatically recurring donations are only possible through PayPal, in increments beginning at $5/month, and you will receive a letter indicating your tax-deductible support every year
- Annually: pay once a year. You will receive a gentle reminder to renew your contribution on the one year anniversary of your contribution. Annual donations can be paid online or by check.
Pay online or please make checks payable to “Western Neighborhoods Project” and mail them to 1617 Balboa Street, SF, CA, 94121.
Donating Your Time
The value of your expertise as a volunteer with WNP is comparable to any of the financial contributions referenced above.
Volunteer support is needed in the following areas:
- Public Programs: Assist WNP with developing program ideas; help to staff, coordinate, and manage in-person and virtual events (set up/break down, working a bar/snack table, checking in/welcoming guests, distributing surveys, and logging responses).
- Marketing & Outreach: Assist WNP with our communications by helping draft and design emails, fliers, and create content across all platforms (Mailchimp, Evenbrite, Instagram, and Facebook).
- Accessibility: Translating and/or transcribing our podcasts and creating audio files for written content in order to increase accessibility for the hearing impaired and those with impaired vision.
- Development: Working with WNP staff to research and write grants, develop targeted sponsorship opportunities and fundraising campaigns (print and digital), and help with membership drives. This may also include preparations for fundraising events.
- Collections Management: Rehousing, cataloging, digitizing, and improving metadata on materials in our collection, primarily photographic media.
- Exhibitions: Working with WNP staff to research, produce, install, and maintain exhibitions that combine local history with local art at our office and gallery, as well as auxiliary locations.
- Education: Working with WNP staff and community partners to develop curriculum resources, activities, and other educational materials based on local history. If you are an active or retired educator, we would love your expertise!
- Content Creation: Researching and writing articles for the Outside Lands and OpenSFHistory websites, Outside Lands membership magazine, Outside Lands San Francisco podcast, and producing short history videos for YouTube.
Skills Preferred
- Must be willing to commit to a regular volunteer schedule.
- We are an Apple office, but proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace apps, Photoshop, Lightroom and InDesign are a huge plus.
- Strong research and writing skills. Doesn’t hurt if you’re decent with a camera either!
- Must have a sense of humor. We like to keep it fun and there’s a healthy dose of sarcasm in the office at all times.
- Must be flexible. We are a two-employee shop so priorities change daily.
If you think this is up your alley and you’d like to help us do this work, please send us your resume and a short description of what you’d like to do with WNP.
