These processes don’t stay the same if you want AI to help; they need to shift a bit so everything runs smoothly and stays consistent across your network. This isn’t a tools-heavy talk. Instead, it focuses on how your setup and workflows need to evolve, so AI is actually useful (and not just hype). You’ll see practical examples, learn how to get your network ready, avoid the usual mistakes, and build something that can scale without turning into a mess.

June 8, 2026 — WordPress is currently preparing several changes around learning and contributor onboarding. In this conversation, Mary Hubbard (Executive Director of WordPress), Benjamin Zekavica (Core Team Rep), Rade Jekic (Training Team Rep), Natalia Basiura, and Klaus Harris discuss the programs currently in progress. This includes new contributor pathways, simpler onboarding steps, and the first university partnerships to connect WordPress with academic learning. The session looks at how new contributors can get started more easily, how people who stepped away can find a way back, and which skills will be important for working with WordPress in the coming years. It also gives a look into the internal work aimed at making learning and contribution more structured and accessible across the project.

But how does someone move from simply using WordPress to becoming an active contributor who helps shape the platform’s future? In this session, we’ll explore the personal and collective benefits of contributing to WordPress. You’ll learn why giving back matters, how even small contributions make a big difference, and what steps you can take to get started. Drawing from my own journey as part of the WordPress Training Team, the group behind learn.wordpress.org site, I’ll share real examples of contribution in action: from writing lessons and translating content to mentoring newcomers. By the end, you’ll see that contributing is not just about improving WordPress; it’s about growing as an individual, connecting with people around the world, and being part of something bigger than yourself.
