Recent furniture markets and designer showcases are revealing a new trend, the use of bright, vibrant, bold color as well as interesting shapes, some a nod toward vintage.
From art deco to mid-century modern references to organic silhouettes and a renewed embrace of Southwestern color palettes, today’s trends celebrate warmth, coziness and a deviation from the minimalism and overly neutral color palettes that have dominated in recent years.
Based on the current trends, here are some tips to kick-start your home décor.
1. Incorporate timeless furnishings. Mid-century modern and art deco influences are fashion forward and on trend.
2. Choose organic shaped furniture “statement” pieces such as coffee and side tables. Rigid and rectangular is out and soft and organic is in.
3. Embrace warm Southwestern color palettes. Deep oranges, rusts and cranberry tones add richness and warmth, particularly when layered with neutral backdrops.
4. Use oversized artwork as a focal point. Large-scale pieces especially those in warm soothing, desert-inspired hues can anchor a room and create a sense of coziness.
5. Treat bold artwork as architecture for the wall. Strong compositions and saturated colors are now viewed as bold and creative.
6. Introduce color through textiles such as colorful toss pillows and throws.
7. Balance vibrant accents with organic materials such as wood and stone.
8. Infuse textured accessories and accents such as pottery and earthenware.
9. Mix styles and materials. These days, a room with a singular focus is often considered bland and boring.
10. Prioritize statement pieces over clutter. Look to use a “statement” piece as a springboard to your design or color story.
