Overview
The Ph.D. Program in Economics is an international program that has been established for several decades. With our strong reputation, our graduates are highly qualified and sought after to fill positions in several areas at prestigious universities, the private sector, and international organizations.
In the first year, students will take coursework in advanced economic theories. Upon the completion of their qualifying examination, students continue to write their theses in the fields of their interest. Our faculty members of local and international economists who are very prolific in their research publications are experts in the field with long experience in teaching, research, and practice in economics. Currently, our faculty-to-student ratio is comparable to international standards.
The international learning environment, together with the most fully equipped facilities in the country make Chula’s Ph.D. Program in Economics the main aim for international students seeking education in the field of Economics in Thailand. Currently, over half of our annual enrollment are foreign students.

Academic Terms
- The Ph.D. program is a full-time program. Students must register for all three semesters during the academic year.
- There are four compulsory courses during the first year totaling 12 credits. Students must earn a grade point of no less than 3 on a 4-point system.
- Students are required to pass the qualifying examination within the 6th semester upon their enrollment in the program.
- Students also need to register for 36 credits of dissertation course.
- The total number of credits for program completion is 48 credits.
- From the second year onward, students will concentrate on their research. Publication and presentation of their research findings at international conferences are mandatory for graduation.
- The final dissertation examination must be completed within 6 years upon enrollment in the program.

Our Ph.D. program is one of the few programs in Thailand that offer courses in advanced economics. The Faculty of Economics is a leading economics institute in Thailand with more than 50 highly accomplished Thai and foreign faculty members who specialize in various fields. They are also very prolific in their research publications. Currently, our faculty-to-student ratio is comparable to international standards. The Southeast Asian Journal of Economics (SAJE), published by Chula Economics is Thailand’s first journal in the field that is indexed by the Scopus database.

Financial Support
Financially, students with high academic performance also have opportunities to get partial or full financial support including tuition fees and monthly allowance. Students are also eligible to get financial support for participating in international seminars.
