As the Jerusalem bureau chief, Patrick Kingsley has guided us through a pivotal time in the Middle East, with patient leadership, journalistic drive, and seemingly endless energy. Now, we are thrilled to announce a significant new chapter for Patrick, who later this year will take on the role of Continental Europe Editor.
In this position, he will be at the forefront of our coverage across a vital region, focusing on news, analysis, and enterprise from our bureaus in Rome, Madrid, Berlin and Paris. As a correspondent, Patrick has been a pioneer in our push to reinvent our journalism, whether it is live, explanatory, visuals or video, while also producing the signature dispatches, enterprise and investigations at the core of what we do internationally. It’s a multi-talented toolkit that he will bring to his new work as an editor, working with the teams to rethink our journalism in an evolving landscape.
He takes over the portfolio from Kirk Kraeutler, who has deftly overseen the region during a period of change, from the migration crisis and Brexit to the rise of the right and the Ukraine war. An ever talented editor, Kirk will run a team of senior correspondents with a varied remit that crosses borders and themes, handling some of our most ambitious enterprise and jumping into some of our biggest global news stories.
In many ways, editing is a natural fit for Patrick. During his nearly five years in Jerusalem, he oversaw one of the largest overseas bureaus, running a team of 15 staffers and freelancers. Together, they won a Pulitzer prize, a Polk award and two Overseas Press Club awards for their work. He has embraced our mission to hold power to account, investigating Israel’s secret strike protocols, Benjamin Netanyahu’s wartime leadership and Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, while also helping readers understand the people and the places we cover as with his pre-war journey through Israel and this dispatch on a house embodying the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“Patrick is the quintessential Times journalist,” says Yara Bayoumy, the International deputy for the Middle East. “He leaves Jerusalem having produced an unparalleled body of work: numerous scoops, deeply reported and nuanced investigations, and stories about people living through difficult moments. He is empathetic, thoughtful, and patient – qualities he’ll definitely need as an editor in London.”
His move to London is a homecoming after reporting from more than 50 countries and territories. He started with The Guardian in London, Cairo and Istanbul. He joined The Times in 2017 in Turkey before moving to Berlin and reporting from across Europe and parts of Africa.
He has written two books, a portrait of Denmark called “How to Be Danish,” and an account of Europe’s migration crisis, “The New Odyssey.” He’s lectured on migration at Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge, where he studied English.
Patrick will move to London later this year. Please join us in congratulating him on a remarkable run in Jerusalem and an exciting new role in London.
