3 min readStay furious. The Hulu crime series, created by former New Girl showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether, is officially renewed for season 2. Alongside August’s TV slate of alien detectives (Lanterns), moody teen romances (Sterling Point), CIA war games (Lioness), and obnoxiously chipper soccer coaches (Ted Lasso), Furious has only grown in popularity from week to week since its debut in late July. Now, according to Variety, the cast will return for more.
The story follows FBI agent Alice Black (played by Emmy Rossum), who is tasked with tracking down serial killer Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew). Catherine is a survivor of sex trafficking, who is running down her hit list to murder the evil men responsible. It’s heavy stuff, yes, but Furious contains much more than your typical Law & Order: SVU storylines.
As the season goes on, Meriwether uses her comedy chops to highlight the ways in which officers who work in sex crimes cope with the horrific nature of their jobs. The jokes are dark, and the characters are chaotic. But Furious also tackles serious storylines such as overlooked domestic violence cases, as well as how the killer views murder as the only way that these men will ever face real consequences for their actions, that tie the tone of the series together.
We won’t reveal any of the big plot twists ahead of the finale on Monday, August 31, but it’s looking like the case is coming to a head. Alice and Catherine eventually meet and agree that working together might be the only way to achieve both of their goals. Everything is leading toward a dramatic conclusion that wraps up the entire season.
Still, according to Meriwether, the showrunner was already interested in a second season before the renewal. However, more story might just require a new case for Alice Black to solve. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The second season is likely to follow Rossum’s Alice on a new case, though it’s still very early in the development process.” The first season is based on the 1987 film Black Widow, so Meriwether will need to look elsewhere for season 2 material.
“I have to find an ending where we feel satisfied, but that we can go on,” Meriwether told The Wrap right after the series premirered. “I remember that being a very challenging thing with New Girl, getting to the end of the season and being like, ‘We have to wrap up some things, but not all things. We need to create more problems.’”
“I do feel like one of the best things about TV is getting time with characters, and getting years with characters, and being able to dig in,” she continued. “So I’m hoping that we get more seasons of [Furious]. And as a huge fan of SVU, I feel like this show kind of exists in that world of like, there’s other cases they can tackle.”
Meriwether is also working on the Britney Spears biopic, directed by Jon M. Chu. The story will adapt her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me. No official casting choice has been announced yet, but it’s looking like a busy next year for Meriwether—one that includes more cases for Alice Black.
