Formula 1 fans don’t have to tell you twice that summer is always a trying time. Why? The sporting showdown takes its mandated annual pause, allowing the thousands of folk who make up the 11 teams to take a pause from life in the fast lane and recalibrate.
As fans, we’re forced to satiate the absence of watching cars go round in speedy circles by watching re-runs, dissecting driver rumours and counting down the days until engines fire up again. But as of last weekend, we’re officially back on, and as we head into the second half of the 2026 season, IWC and Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team prove that sometimes, good things are worth waiting for.
Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, taking place on 11th October on the infamous Marina Bay Street Circuit, Mercedes have turned to their Official Engineering Partner, Schaffhausen’s finest, to launch an all-new look for their Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 collab watch. This time round, it’s adieu to the signature PETRONAS blue shades, now shifting gears into a rather rarer shade within the horological world: purple.
And it’s not just any old shade of grape, either. Revamping the Pilot’s watch into a softly saturated shade, the switch-up takes its cues from Singapore’s national flower. Named Vanda Miss Joaquim, aka the Singapore Orchid, it was first bred in the city in 1893 as any horticultural hardliner will have you know.
Marking a first for the hue to hit the dial, it strikes the eye with the contrasting palette of PETRONAS green numerals, indices and lume hands, primed for maximalists and anyone inclined to take a few risks with their colour palette. What’s life without a little thrill on the wrist?
The 41mm case is made from Grade 5 titanium, a material with convincing motorsport credentials. Roughly half the weight of steel, titanium appears throughout Formula 1 machinery, including the Halo safety structure protecting the driver’s cockpit. IWC gives it a brushed finish here, its cool grey surface tempering the dial’s more extroverted tendencies.

Inside you’ll find the trusted manufacture movement (calibre 69385 for those taking note) with a 46-hour power reserve. The familiar vertical arrangement places the chronograph minutes at 12 o’clock, while a combined day-date window occupies the three o’clock position. Completing the purple parade, a matching violet rubber strap completes the look and can be switched without tools using IWC’s EasX-CHANGE system, should you decide that purple-on-purple may not be the answer to every wardrobe predicament. That said, restraint isn’t exactly on the agenda in F1 though so we do encourage you to go full bloom.
Marking the fourth instalment between the two precision partners, you can expect to spot the new watch on the wrists of the team’s famed faces on track – we await team principal Mr Wolff’s grand unveiling – alongside mechanics, engineers, and staff back at the British headquarters in Brackley.
Therein lies much of its appeal. Purple may grab the attention, but beneath it is a serious tool watch tied to people doing serious jobs at 200mph. And for a race as spectacular as Singapore – where the humidity runs high, the margins run slim and drivers hurtle through city streets beneath several thousand lights – subtlety was never really going to make pole position.
