In the latest TV series Glen Powell is in, he plays a disgraced football player (Russ Holliday) that has to disguise himself as a hot new star Chad Powers (obviously) to get himself back on the pitch. It's a lot of dressing up. Which is probably why the 37-year-old is already down with doing one fit, three ways.
On the way to Jimmy Kimmel Live! yesterday, Powell arrived in the kind of look that we'd expect the Texan to be in. On top, there was a Giuliva Heritage brown polo with rolled up sleeves and a spread collar, tucked into blue vintage Levi's that pooled nicely over a pair of chocolate cowboy Stetson boots. A pair of Brunello Cucinelli sunglasses (that happen to be on sale btw!) added some ’70s aura that matched his belt and boots. It's the type of fit you'd want to wear meeting your partner's parents for the first time, if your partner's parents lived on a ranch and said ‘y'all’ often. Pair that with Powell's natural southern charm and cute pup if you have one (meet Brisket), and you're onto a winner.
As most stars do, his TV appearance meant another outfit change. But only slightly. Sitting on the couch opposite Jelly Roll, who was the guest host for the night, Powell had swapped his top for a grey shirt and matching blazer by Lardini, and his Western boots for a more classic black style. But in true cowboy fashion, he stayed loyal to those jeans.
This wasn't another meeting-the-in-laws look. The shirt was buttoned low to expose a nice amount of chest hair, a gold pendant and a cracking tan. He lounged on that sofa like he was the boss of a club booth, waiting to receive his next drink in exchange for a generous tip. (Only nice guys who are kind to service workers get to meet the parents, duh.) With a swap of the top-half, we've got Party Powell. You'd think it was a Friday night.
Thought that was it? Oh no. The Top Gun: Maverick star left the studio in another collared shirt. This time, he'd gone for a merino knit from King & Tuckfield, a British brand that's been churning out bangers with a 1940s and ’50s influence for the last ten years. He's left it unbuttoned, exposing a white Calvin Klein tank top tucked into the same jeans and black boots. We suspect he's heading home to give Brisket a little walk.
“The three different styles work so well when the base are a pair of vintage Levi’s, and they’re so versatile and adaptable,” Powell's stylist, Warren Alfie Baker, told GQ. “Stone-wash vintage Levi’s have a rich heritage in Hollywood. We love a Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner and Denzel Washington reference.”
Clearly, Powell packs light – he's gotta have space for his dog, after all. So take this as a lesson of what a pair of jeans can do for you. Style them right, and you've got a look that'll take you from day to night, and even the day after. That's Practical Powell to you.
