The best gifts for her have birthdays and anniversaries all tied up with ribbon
Looking for a bit of guidance on what the best gifts for her actually are should not be a dirty secret. Not even the most unpleasant of in-laws would be cross with you about it. I mean, Christ, if every guide on the internet and every display in every shop in all the land is to be believed, you won't be done with your birthday shopping until you've bought up all of Selfridges.

To be clear: you do not need to become a billionaire in order to have a pleasant occasion. The solution is much simpler, and tremendously cheaper. It will probably even involve buying something that you had already considered: lingerie, for example, or jewellery. What this guide aims to give you is solutions to both those classic ideas as well as things you won't have ever dreamed of, whether you're shopping for your other half, your sister, or want a gift for you mum.

Best gifts for her
It may make an ass out of us both for me to assume that you already have a vague idea of what she wants. Probably it's best to hedge on the side of total caution, which is why you'll find bona fide crowd-pleasers here.
Best birthday gifts for her
In February, “festive” means heart-shaped and filled with confetti. In October, it refers to pumpkins and ghostly festoons. For birthdays, it can mean anything you want, so long as it's special. A trip abroad or to a posh UK hotel goes a long, long way but if your funds are shorter then here are some of my favourite crowd pleasers that cost less than a train ticket to Edinburgh.
Many people consider their mum the easiest person to buy for, but I advise caution when surrounded by an abundance of options. Just because she's the most grateful person you know doesn't mean that she actually likes that puzzle book you picked up without too much thought. In short: don't let the enormous choice of mum-related gifts let you get lazy.
Best gifts for wives
Maybe you already did the whole jewellery and lingerie thing at the beginning of your relationship; you shouldn't let that stop you from continuing to woo her. If anything, now is an even better time as you know her tastes so well. Luxury skincare is another romantic gesture, just make sure you're willing to repurchase it at every special occasion going forwards.
Like any form of generalisation, choosing a bunch of gifts that a woman I've never met might like is an art of hedging ones bets a little. I don't know your sister, after all! It's just as possible that you should be heading to Arc'Teryx for climbing gear, or Etsy for a Fourth Wing tee as you should to one of these four spots.
Best affordable gifts for her
Even a £40 budget can turn up some of the best gifts I've found in my three year search for the things you and yours actually want. Selfridges womenswear buyer Grace Neal agrees: “Sometimes people panic when they have smaller budgets, but some amazing options exist.” Her first pick are socks, “They're the perfect item to complement an outfit or show off an individual’s personality,” she says.
Best unusual gifts for her
Unusual gifts, aka gifts for the woman who has everything (seriously, how does she have all the stuff on this list already!?). There's still a lot of interesting purchases you can make that even the most dedicated of consumers (probably) won't have.
Best high-end gifts for her
Got a lotta money to burn? How about a desire to really impress someone? This is the section for you, covering off silk lingerie, a diamond necklace, and a couple of other very posh but totally worth it lifestyle grails.
Just a few of the things that me (a girlfriend) with many friends (who are also girlfriends) really, genuinely want right now.

Why you can trust GQ
Here at GQ, we know our onions. And by onions, we mean clothing, grooming and beauty, watches, homeware and all the rest. In these categories, GQ has been an authority since 1931, when the American iteration of the magazine first launched. British GQ has been doing the same since 1989, creating an environment that seeks out excellence in every corner of the world. The in-house shopping experts at GQ Recommends take this pedigree to the shops, finding products and testing them out in order to find out which are worth our readers' hard-earned money. In the business of gifting the women in your life, we are uniquely positioned to help you because while we are run by a group of people obsessed with menswear (the editor of this article included) this guide is assembled by a woman who knows what she and her female friends and family really want, as well as what the men who read GQ tend to buy.
How I chose the best gifts for her
As Senior Commerce Writer at British GQ, I (Jessie Atkinson) spend a healthy — and very fun — amount of time researching and road testing a whole host of gifts. I have been writing for GQ Recommends since September 2022, meaning that I've had four Christmas seasons finding and recommending gifts for the women in your life. At GQ, we're hands-on with the clothing samples, beauty releases, jewellery, lingerie and food (particularly the food) that we recommend in these guides. I spend the rest of my time recommending menswear, meaning that I have a solid understanding of what all genders buy and what they want buying for them. Most of the things in this list have been directly tried and recommended by me or someone on the British GQ team, but where that hasn't been possible, I've only selected from brands that one of us has used — and loved — before.

How to choose the best gifts for her
I can't make this final decision for you (unless you know me, and even then I'd be hesitant to acquiesce) but I do consider myself a better port of call for this question than a cursory search on an AI bot, and that's because I or someone I know have bonafide, real life, hands on experience with the majority of the gifts listed here. This experience has accumulated, over three years of testing, to the conclusion that you should choose from this guide using your gut. If you know your giftee well, choosing should be as simple as imagining her unwrapping your choice: is she joyful at the idea? Inspired by my own fiancé, I also suggest starting a note on your phone of things that she mentions that she likes and special products that she frequently repurchases. This is particularly fruitful for those at the start of a relationship.
If you know your giftee less well, my topline ideas for 2026 are: Beautifect's Glow Mirror for someone who loves makeup, Mejuri's herringbone necklace for someone with classic style (choose gold or silver depending on which she already wears), or something from House of Sunny or Damson Madder for those with a little more quirk to their style. The best gift under £20 that I've found this year is a Taschen mini coffee table book, which comes in dozens of titles, costs only £15, and would make a chic present for almost anyone.
What are the best jewellery gifts for her?
Chocolates, champagne, flowers, lingerie, perfume and jewellery: these are the pillars on which the institution of gifting are propped. Contrary to some anecdotal lines of thinking, I'm a big proponent of these foundational choices, so long as you acknowledge that this should not be tantamount to playing the game of gifting on easy mode.
If anything, you should probably really put more thought into your decision so as to avoid accusations of laziness. When it comes to jewellery, you do not have to spend big, but you should think carefully. The good news is that our favourite women's jewellery brands aren't all eye-wateringly expensive, meaning you have a wealth of options at different budgets. The best demi-fine jewellers for gifting are, in my experience, Mejuri and Monica Vinader.
A key consideration with choosing jewellery is assessing what she already wears. If you never see her wear rings, for example, that's probably not the right direction. Additionally, pay close attention to the jewellery she currently owns to assess whether she's a gold, silver or rose-gold kind of person. (Some do mix silver and gold, and you can choose either if that's the case.) This is also an important practice in order to ascertain if she's more into classics (delicate pearls, whisper-thin gold chains) or curveballs (pop art hearts, trinkets, acrylics).
What is the best anniversary gift for her?
A bouquet of flowers is tried and tested by generations of partners lavishing their other halves, and while I do recommend splashing out on flowers more frequently than once per year, it is certainly a bona fide option come your special day. I have a more thorough explainer on how to buy flowers in the 21st century, but my top line advice is to opt for an interesting, generous arrangement from a local florist or a brand like M&S, Arena, Flowerbx or Appleyard.
In that same vein: yes, chocolates, champagne, lingerie and jewellery are all still choices as great as they were 100 years ago.
If you want to do something different, take a look at some of the personalised options on this list, in particular Not Another Bill's silver fortune cookie (and, honestly, all of its other options, too) or Papier's sentimental photo book.
Finally, organise a time to go on a date. Anything from dinner and drinks to bungee jumping works if it represents your relationship and partner's interests.
What is the best gift for girlfriend on her birthday?
The answer to this question differs wildly from person to person, but many women love a big, splashy gift for their birthday. Speaking in general terms, jewellery, a handbag or shoes are easy wins, as is underwear — so long as you consult our guide on how to buy lingerie, that is.
Chocolate, cheese, alcohol and baked goods get a big ‘yes’ too, but if you want to avoid cliché – while ensuring she still loves what you bought – I strongly recommend Beautifect's ‘Glow’ makeup mirror, an LED face mask like Currentbody's, or a soft toy from Jellycat.
In conclusion
The worst mistake you could make is to buy something from this list just because I've listed it as a best gift for a woman… and the person you're buying for is a woman. In reality, you're going to have to consider personal preference, meaning top choices such as personalised jewellery, high-quality skincare and experiences such as spa days, gig tickets or even holidays will be highly subjective. While everything in this list has been selected by me for relevance, thoughtfulness, cherishability and all that good stuff, understanding the person you're buying for's hobbies and passions is ultimately the most important route to buying them the perfect gift.
Womenswear and Menswear Buyer for Selfridges, Grace Neal, advises thinking through the major categories and considering if they'd suit your giftee: “You should always consider who you are buying for, and then find a category that would work best for them. Would they appreciate pyjamas? Do they need an upgrade to their gym outfits, a new bag, or a piece of jewellery?”. She's a big fan of socks as an inexpensive gift that can be interesting (in design) as well as practical. If socks, pyjamas, gymwear, a bag or a piece of jewellery aren't what you're looking for, I think you should be safe with chocolate or cheese, a bottle of booze, and/or some tickets to a gig or West End show.
