Monkey Island Estate has been hosting the great and the good since 1723 when the 3rd Duke of Marlborough purchased this eyot in the River Thames and built the two elegant Georgian pavilions that stand today. Serving as his fishing retreat for two decades, the Fishing Pavilion had become a riverside inn by the mid-19th century and from thereon in, the likes of Edward VII, Sir Edward Elgar and H G Wells graced its guest list.
The two Grade I listed buildings now welcome discerning travellers, gourmands and river enthusiasts to experience its five-star service and amenities, all surrounded by seven acres of gardens, which provide a pretty backdrop for weddings. In fact, the entire estate can be hired as an exclusive-use wedding venue with the capacity to cater up to 300 in a marquee or 130 in the Pavilion; more intimate ceremonies take place in the River Room or Spencer Suite.
Each one of the 40 guest rooms, historic Wedgewood Suite and three luxury private residences is uniquely decorated in a contemporary English country house style and looks out to the river or garden. However, The Monkey Island Brasserie arguably has the finest river views, especially bewitching during the summer when its terrace opens up for alfresco dining. In addition to the modern British classics at lunch and dinner, afternoon tea is available at the Brasserie while cocktails, fine wines, Champagnes and light bites are served in The Monkey Bar.
Moored on Monkey Island’s banks is the Floating Spa, a restored Dutch barge, but if you’d rather be sailing down the river than relaxing on it, summertime private electric boat trips be arranged; so too can electric bike hire, and canoeing and kayaking tours in Windsor, just 20 minutes away.
