From an elevated position above Combesgate beach, just moments from the South West Coastal Path, Watersmeet Hotel seemingly floats above the North Atlantic coast. Considered one of the most dramatic locations in the South West, Watersmeet resides between the seaside village of Mortehoe and Woolacombe beach.
A fresh, contemporary retreat ideal for romantic getaways and short breaks, this is also a walker’s and rambler’s paradise with various National Trust coastal trails (Morte Point, Baggy Point) nearby. Golfers enjoy two world-class links courses close by.
Watersmeet has direct access to the sandy shore below via a set of steps but for the best bird’s eye views of this ever-changing coastline over to Lundy Island, gaze through the wall of windows onto the hotel’s terrace spread across two levels. From here, you may dine alfresco and/or enjoy a cocktail. Many of the guest rooms have balconies facing these sea views too, as do three of the four suites with the Beach Loft Suite taking in a double-aspect of both Combesgate beach and Lundy Island. (The first-floor Combesgate Suite may not have a balcony but features a three-bay window perfectly framing the beach below.)
Weather permitting, alfresco lunch and tea in the tea garden is a must, and dining by candlelight at The Rocks restaurant is essential. Dishes are well balanced, imaginative and contain local ingredients. Alternatively, the Bistro serves classic British favourites.
Additional facilities: a heated outdoor pool, indoor pool with hot spa and steam room.
Be warned: if you enjoy a cocktail or two on the fabulous new sun terrace, you’ll need to muster some incredibly strong willpower to go back inside!
