Regarded as one of the most beautiful of Yorkshire’s four counties – the largest county in England – North Yorkshire is a refreshing breath of fresh air perfect for walking holidays, romantic breaks for couples, country retreats and peaceful escapes from the ratrace. An impressive 40% of North Yorkshire is covered by National Parks in addition to a countless number of historic castles and elegant estates surrounded by verdant woodland. Visitors are promised an experience filled with intriguing history and natural beauty during a visit here.

To the east of the county lies the heather-clad North York Moors National Park, a tranquil and scenic place where nature and history intertwine beautifully. The Park is home to 12,000 archaeological sites, quaint villages and ancient forests. For an extra special experience, head to the National Park in the summer to witness the heather moorland turn an incredible purple.

Film fans should visit Goathland Railway Station – part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line – also known as Hogsmeade Station for the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter film franchise. Pickering Railway Station, located on the same railway line, was used in Downton Abbey film’s opening sequence.

After a peaceful start in the Moors, travel south to York and then west to Harrogate for a dose of metropolitan merriment. York, for its fascinating history, quaint streets and gothic-style medieval York Minster cathedral, and upscale Harrogate for its Turkish baths, gardens and historic houses.

From Harrogate, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is a mere half hour drive away. Known as a walking holiday destination, the Park promises visitors a delightful back-to-nature respite within thousands of miles of hills, moors and chocolate-box towns. For the more adventurous, the Park’s limestone cave systems are a big draw. Caving along the narrow passageways in the Long Churn Cave have to be experienced to be believed. In contrast, Bolton Abbey, one of the beguiling estates owned by the Duke of Devonshire, guarantees families a fun day out.
