Historic vestiges alongside modern designer edges in Portugal’s Évora

A hotel since the 1920s, Noble House Essence Évora may be the oldest hotel in Alentejo’s Évora but this 33-room sanctuary in the city is awash with modernity.

Just an hour’s drive from Lisbon, Évora has been a World Heritage Site since 1986 and Noble House Essence Évora has been a part of the city since the 15th century (its foundations are built upon the first city wall). From its journey as an aristocratic home, school and boutique hotel, reminders of its heritage have been preserved thanks to a painstaking restoration.

Simple lines and carefully chosen primary colours cleverly complement the 17th-century glazed tiles and vaulted ceilings. Rooms, suites and apartments are comfortable and cosy with plenty of natural light. Some are located in the former warehouses and carriage rooms near a section of a preserved Roman wall. All have picturesque views of either the cathedral and city or countryside.

Noble House Essence Évora really is a great location to explore the city and its Roman past; the region’s gastronomy and wine too. But miss out on the authentic dishes and local wines served at Noble Bistro and you’ll regret it! Enquire about day trips to vineyards and olive oil tasting sessions. It’s well worth taking a walking and/or cycling tour, plus a hot-air ballooning experience.

A Note From The Local Expert…

Noble House Essence Évora, whose origins go back to the 15th century, is a genuine example of the Alentejo noble inn. Its foundations are based on the “Cerca Velha,” the city’s first wall, and its history is rich and diverse. Originally, it was the Solar dos Condes da Lousã, later it worked as a school and since the 1920s it has been a hotel; the oldest in the city. Thanks to architect Fernando Coelho, the hotel has been awarded with several international awards. Located in the historic heart of Évora, it’s a two-minute walk from the cathedral and Roman temple.
