The clock on quantum risk just started ticking — officially. Executive Order 14412, "Securing the Nation Against Advanced Cryptographic Attacks," sets a hard deadline: post-quantum cryptography compliance by the end of 2030, with a PQC pilot program within 180 days and cryptographic bill of materials guidance within 270 days. As Forrester put it bluntly: "The debate over whether this is a foreseeable risk just ended." Boards that don't act will have to explain why their standard of care is lower than the federal government's — and that gap can become a negligence finding. EE Times notes the order formally targets federal contractors, but the ripple effect will reach the entire technology ecosystem — driving adoption of NIST-approved standards and forcing organizations to inventory their cryptographic assets now, not later. The threat is already here. "Harvest now, decrypt later" attacks mean data stolen today is simply waiting for a quantum computer to unlock it.
