Where Passion Meets Progress
About us
Newark Public Schools is the largest and one of the oldest school systems in New Jersey, with origins dating back to 1676. Currently, NPS has 66 schools serving 37,853 students. With a focus on creating high quality schools through innovative reform efforts, NPS has an incredible opportunity to transform the school system into one that ensures that all of its students graduate to succeed in the college or career of their choice. In order to meet our students’ needs, we need people who can drive and support unprecedented levels of student achievement. NPS employees must be relentless in their drive to achieve success for all students. In return, NPS empowers talent by providing the resources and support needed to succeed. We need talent that: 1. Believes all students can achieve at high levels 2. Grows diverse teams 3. Are reflective and actively seek opportunities to grow 4. Innovates the previously unthinkable 5. Effectively communicates with others 6. Treats all people with respect and dignity 7. Knows their content and gets things done For more information, visit the Newark Public Schools homepage at http://www.nps.k12.nj.us/. Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for University High School senior Jade Peralta. Jade was surprised during a video call with life-changing news — she earned a FULL scholarship to Bentley University as a First Generation President Scholar! From a self-described shy freshman to president of her school’s award-winning Speech & Debate Team, Jade’s journey is a powerful example of what hard work, confidence, and determination can achieve.

Michael B. Jordan has always shown his pride in being from Newark and an alum of Arts High School. Anthony Johnson’s story shows a few of the people who are proud of him – for his Best Actor nomination at the Oscars, as well as his kindness and work ethic he has shown since they knew him as a high school student. Good luck tomorrow night, Mr. Jordan! The City of Newark is rooting for you! https://lnkd.in/eburFz9f

Newark Public Schools was proud to have a team of outstanding leaders present this week at the New Jersey Association of School Administrators' 9th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference. Dr. Samantha Lott-Velez, Assistant Superintendent, joined principals Karla Venezia (Louisa A. Spencer School), Dorrice Rayam-Johnson (Ivy Hill Elementary School), and Ashley Jiles (Speedway Avenue School) to present, “Driving Student Success: Lessons from High-Impact Principals.” The session highlighted how strong instructional leadership, intentional school systems, and data-driven decision-making can lead to measurable gains in student achievement and attendance. Last month, the same group of leaders presented at the Nurturing Greatness Summit hosted by Principal Baruti Kafele and the TESO Consulting Group. We’re proud of these Newark Public Schools leaders for sharing their expertise and helping advance the conversation about effective school leadership. #NewarkPublicSchools #EducationalLeadership #WomenInLeadership

Newark Public Schools proudly kicked off Women’s History Month some very special visitors, including NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill and NJ Education Commissioner Dr. Lily Laux. Governor Sherrill read Parker Looks Up to students in grades 2 through 6 at Michelle Obama Elementary School, followed by a powerful conversation with 16 seniors from Science Park High School about leadership, inspiration, and the future they are building. Superintendent León, Board President Hasani K. Council, Principal LaShanda Gilliam, and other district leaders were also honored to welcome Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, and NJ Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz. This inspiring visit celebrates the start of Women’s History Month and the first day of Read Across America Week, reminding our students, especially our young girls, that their voices, ideas, and dreams matter. Newark Public Schools celebrates the women leading the way, past, present, and future. @govsherrillnj @replamonica @senmteresaruiz @nps_obamaelem
