About us
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the National Football League’s most established franchises, as well as one of the most successful in the league. The Steelers were founded in 1933 by Art Rooney Sr., and are the fifth-oldest franchise in the NFL. The Steelers take pride in being one of only two teams in the NFL to have won six Super Bowl Championships. The Steelers soared to success in the 1970s under Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Noll, winning four of their Super Bowls during a six-year span. The team returned to that dominance in the 2000s, adding two more Super Bowls, one with Coach Bill Cowher and the sixth one under current Coach Mike Tomlin. Consistency, loyalty and a commitment to success on the field and in the community have made the Steelers not just one of the most respected teams in the NFL, but also in all of professional sports.

For nearly 100 years, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has turned compassion into action for our community, bringing people and organizations together to strengthen our region, support our neighbors, and help Southwestern Pennsylvania thrive. Tonight, we are celebrating that milestone, honoring United Way’s longstanding connection to the Steelers and the Rooney family. As United Way looks toward the next 100 years of work, we're proud to stand alongside them and extend our gratitude to the volunteers, donors, and fans who make this partnership possible.

We believe in the transformative power of working together, both on and off the field. Yesterday marked a proud moment as the Hazelwood Cobras played the inaugural football games on the new U. S. Steel Community Field at Hazelwood Green. This milestone, years in the making, is the result of a unique collaboration. Through Hazelwood Youth Sports Charities and Steelers Charities, together with the Richard King Mellon Foundation, Tishman Speyer, United States Steel Corporation, Central Catholic High School, and the NFL Foundation, we built a state-of-the-art, multi-sport complex. Professionally operated by The Sports Facilities Companies, a national leader in the development and management of sports and recreation venues, the field will help to meet the demand for high-quality athletic space in the city neighborhood of Hazelwood, the Mon Valley and beyond. The opening of the field also marks an important milestone for Hazelwood Green, a former industrial site that has been transformed over the past 20 years through the vision and collaboration of the Almono Partnership — the Heinz Endowments, Richard King Mellon Foundation and Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. We look forward to the field welcoming athletes across a multitude of sports to compete and strengthen their skills, residents and families using the venue to stay active and well, and community groups making it a gathering place. And we are especially excited to host Steelers minicamps and clinics at the field. To us, this is more than a field. It is a testament to what’s possible when organizations come together — and to the power of sports to make individuals and communities stronger.
