"United Nations Special Political Missions 1945-2025: An Overview" is the first-ever comprehensive public record of all UN special political missions since the Organization's founding. From the very first mission established in 1948 to mediate the truce in Palestine, to the 167 missions deployed across eight decades, the publication traces how these instruments of diplomacy have evolved in response to shifting geopolitical realities. Presented by USG for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo in June this year, the publication is also a call to reflection. At a time when the international community faces mounting peace and security challenges, it is a reminder that special political missions have navigated difficult geopolitical moments before, and that the power of diplomacy endures. The world has more conflicts today than at any point since 1945, and the past five years have been deadlier than the two decades before them. This is the environment UN peace operations now work in – and where they continue to make a critical contribution to international peace and security, from Afghanistan and Libya to Haiti and Myanmar. But as the world changes, so must our missions. They must adapt to a new conflict landscape, to the financial constraints facing the United Nations and, critically, to new geopolitical realities. The Secretary-General's review on the future of UN peace operations, introduced this afternoon at the General Assembly, sets out how Member States and the Secretariat can make missions fit for today's challenges – and rebuild consensus on how these instruments can be used effectively. Briefing the Security Council today, Acting Special Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov stressed that Gaza’s recovery and the broader political process “are mutually dependent.” He called for resolution 2803 to be implemented immediately and in full, alongside urgent efforts to advance a two-State solution.
