Vijay Rayapati reposted thisVijay Rayapati reposted thisOne of my favorite sessions at #CIO100 was the Startup Showcase discussion: “Build vs. Buy in the AI Era.” The panel brought together three very different AI companies: Ahmed Bashir, CTO, #DevRev: Building an AI-native approach to how teams work, bringing enterprise knowledge, customer context and workflows together through its AI teammate, Computer. (DevRev) Sarthak Jain, CEO, #Nanonets: Tackling the enormous amount of enterprise work still trapped in documents. Its AI agents can read, validate, apply business rules and execute document-heavy workflows across areas such as finance, operations and healthcare. (Nanonets) Vijay Rayapati, Co-founder & CEO, #Atomicwork: Rethinking enterprise service management around an AI workforce, where agents don't just answer employee questions but can reason, coordinate and take action across IT, HR, Finance and enterprise systems. (Atomicwork) But one of the highlights was the moderator, Akash Bhatia, Managing Director & Senior Partner at #BCG. His witty comments, combined with pointed questions, kept pushing the conversation past the usual AI talking points and into questions CIOs actually have to answer. A few ideas stayed with me: 1. If everyone has access to the same #frontiermodels, the model is no longer the moat. Competitive advantage increasingly comes from #enterprisecontext, #proprietarydata, #workflowintegration, trust, and the ability to turn intelligence into action. 2. #Build vs. #Buy is becoming the wrong binary question. CIOs need to decide what intelligence must be proprietary, what platforms should be bought, and where the enterprise should differentiate. The winning architecture will probably be a combination of foundation models, specialized platforms and enterprise-owned intelligence. 3. Speed alone will not differentiate startups for long. The stronger question is: What gets better as the product becomes embedded in the enterprise? #Context? #Data? #Workflowknowledge? #Networkeffects? #SwitchingCosts? Those are much harder for the next AI startup to replicate. 4. AI software is moving from “#helpme” toward “#doitforme.” All three companies, in different ways, point toward the same transition: #Copilot → #Agent → #AIWorkforce. That may be the bigger message for CIOs. We are not simply choosing the next generation of software vendors. We are deciding which parts of the enterprise's future intelligence and decision-making architecture we want to own—and which parts we are willing to delegate. Vijay Rayapati shared thisWhy AI sandboxes matter as a key runtime infrastructure? The moment an agent stops answering and starts doing things like running code, touching files, calling APIs in a loop — you need somewhere for that to happen that isn't your production infra. First, models generate code faster than any review process can gate it, so isolation has to be the default rather than a check. Second, code-mode execution is now cheaper than tool-calling: letting the model write one script against a typed API beats twenty round-trips through the model, but that only works if the script has somewhere safe to run. Third, real agent work is stateful — an agent that rebuilds its environment on every turn burns most of its latency budget on setup. So the sandbox stops being a security wrapper and becomes the agent's runtime. That's why the differences below aren't just infrastructure trivia. The architectural split that matters most: E2B optimizes the security boundary, Modal optimizes the compute substrate, Daytona optimizes state, Cloudflare optimizes proximity to your app. Everything else follows from that. And the counterintuitive part — cold start and price, the two things everyone benchmarks, are the least decisive. Starts have converged to 30–150ms; E2B and Daytona are at literal price parity. What actually decides it is where the control plane lives (Daytona keeps theirs, Modal is managed-only, E2B you can run yourself) and how idle time is billed, which swings total cost by roughly 10x and inverts the ranking depending on workload shape. One of them is Kanwal Rekhi, the first Indian American immigrant to take a company public on Nasdaq. Just read his book - a memoir of his journey from an IIT engineer who arrived in this country, much like many of us, with a few dollars in the pocket and completely clueless about everything except one thing: we knew science and technology, and could learn almost anything. I wasn't sure if I would get anything from the book since I was vaguely aware of the story - but I was pleasantly surprised. Literally could not put this book down once I started (audible) reading it. Highly highly recommend it.
