It presents data on the huge increase in the number of political appointees and the even more significant reduction of career staff. This chart from the article breaks my heart -- among the biggest cuts are to agencies that oversee programs for people with disabilities, older adults, children, people with mental health needs, and the community health center system. One day, you're in a structured environment with classes, assignments, feedback, and a community of people learning alongside you. Then you're navigating an open job market and trying to figure out where your skills fit, how workplaces operate, and what kind of career you want to build. Our Creative & Civic Practice Internship is designed to help bridge some of that distance. Interns are paid to contribute meaningful work that benefits the public while building greater autonomy and experience with professional collaboration and workplace dynamics. Along the way, optional Practice Sessions, mentorship, group work, and introductions to professionals create opportunities to keep learning and explore the many paths creative careers can take. As Branda shares, you don't have to follow a traditional path to make an impact. We're looking for emerging creatives to join us this fall. In our latest blog post, Branda Ayo explores the role local governments can play in helping residents recognize scams by connecting them with trusted information before they need it most. While written with local government leaders in mind, the ideas are equally relevant to nonprofits, libraries, schools, and other community organizations working to help people recognize and respond to financial scams. Ashleigh Axios reposted thisHi LinkedIn, I am looking to speak with any Black folks in New Mexico, Arizona, Missouri, Maryland, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana or Colorado (whew) who have had their Medicaid or SNAP benefits abruptly canceled! These are the states that I know have implemented AI for benefits decisions (or fraud detection), but if someone has experienced this in other states, I would love to speak with you! I’m writing about how AI systems are denying or shaping benefits, and would love to learn more about how this experience is for Black families. For me, it has led to an unnecessary APS case opening and a social worker banging on my door! But I digress, looking to speak with others about their experiences. *Edited to add more context!

Carmen D'Anna joined us in June, after two and a half years designing websites for universities and cultural institutions at FastSpot. She has an MA in Graphic Design from Maryland Institute College of Art and a BA in Art History, which is also excellent training for a role that involves explaining why something should look a certain way to people who majored in communications, journalism, and computer science. What we did not expect is how fast she would jump into the work, making details of each project better with the little touches like custom icons and delightful interactive moments, and knocking out some reports in record time. Most importantly, she’s shown us what it means to be a member of the Friendly team: being dedicated, curious, and thoughtful. Welcome to the team, Carmen!

It is where public service becomes tangible, and where the right leadership can make a real difference in people's lives. That is why I do not take lightly the responsibility our team at Raftelis carries in presenting a strong panel of candidates. Our goal is to help elected bodies deliberate thoughtfully and choose leaders who will serve their communities well. It was my pleasure to work with Mayor Letty Hardi and the City of Falls Church, Virginia City Council in collaboration with Human Resources Director Sharon Gibson and the City staff to produce a rigorous process resulting in the selection of Seth Hendler-Voss, MPA, CPRE, RLA, AAPRA as their next City Manager. It was especially rewarding to watch the vote and hear the wonderful accolades shared. As Gail Anderson, Chair of BFA Advertising and BFA Design, shared: "This year’s return to the top spot is the payoff of several years of deliberate retooling. After the pandemic, we made rebuilding our in-person community a real priority—not simply returning to normal, but rebuilding with intention. We aligned the curriculum more closely with where the industry is headed and created more opportunities for students to sharpen their skills beyond the classroom, including new coursework in emerging media." The reverse matters just as much: knowing when something seems obvious to everyone else but isn’t to you, and inquiring instead of nodding along. Next time you’re in a consequential conversation, prompt the other person to say the obvious/unsaid thing out loud. You might be surprised how much it smooths the way. 🌈 the more you know…
