Such great discussion and ideas!Suzanne Baugher shared thisLast night, we had a full house for HIGHER Community Leaders Network dinner in Los Angeles, and the energy at Baltaire was a perfect reflection of this market: creative, incredibly practical, and deeply focused on the human element of talent. While our SF dinner earlier this week leaned into systems and infrastructure, LA went deep on the 'Authenticity Crisis'. In a world of AI-generated noise and "mustache-wearing" fraudulent candidates, the table consensus was clear: Trust is the new currency in talent attraction. 🔑 Key Themes from the LA Table: The "Raw" Recruitment Era: We discussed moving away from polished agency branding and "Utopian" corporate videos. The new gold standard? "Unproduced" hiring manager pitches and radical transparency. As one leader put it: "If you sound like every other company, you’ve already lost the top 1%." Relationship-Based "Scouting": A fascinating shift is happening where leaders are moving away from traditional job postings entirely for some niche roles. Instead, they are leveraging "talent scouts" who build high-trust relationships—prioritizing the "slow burn" over the "Easy Apply" chaos. The Multi-Lever Fraud Defense: The stories of candidate deception in the room were wild—including deepfakes. Leaders are now balancing friction vs. security, using a mix of video intelligence (BrightHire) and identity verification (tofu) to protect their companies. Building vs. Buying Talent: With the education system lagging behind the speed of AI, several leaders shared how they are launching internal 12-week intensive training programs. If the market doesn't have the skills you need, you have to build the school yourself. The "Anti-Sell" as Kindness: We talked about being honest with candidates about the "real" experience—whether it’s commission-only risk or a hybrid office mandate. Transparency isn't just ethical; it’s an efficiency play to ensure only the "tribe" that fits the "vibe" applies helping reduce attrition later. 🙌 A Massive Thank You to Our LA Attendees: Our largest LA turnout to date from a wide range of industries proved that community is where we learn in real-time together. Thank you Matt Staney and HIGHER Community!Suzanne Baugher shared thisBoarding my flight back to Austin and a still thinking about last night’s HIGHER Leaders Network roundtable in LA. We went in planning to talk about headcount planning and quickly got into topics and challenges that took it much deeper: • uncertainty as the new normal • AI reshaping roles faster than orgs can redesign them • TA leaders carrying more business context (and emotional labor) than ever before • and the ongoing struggle to align talent, finance, boards, and reality What struck me most was how honest the room was. No posturing. No “perfect models.” Just smart leaders sharing what they’re trying, what’s breaking, and where they’re still figuring things out. These conversations are a reminder that the future of workforce planning isn’t about having better spreadsheets. It’s about better partnership, better questions, and more flexibility in how we think about talent. Grateful to everyone who showed up, leaned in, and made this such a thoughtful discussion.
