Baker, Ph.D reposted thisI'm so excited to finally share that this fall, l'll be returning home to Spelman College, but this time as Dr. Glover, Lecturer in the Department of Biology. After earning my PhD in Translational Biomedical Sciences, returning to Spelman feels like more than just the next step in my career. It feels like purpose meeting preparation. I now have the privilege of bringing my experience in science and research into the classroom while pouring into the next generation of Spelman women, including future healthcare professionals, researchers, scientists, and leaders, just as others once poured into me. There were moments along my journey when I questioned the timing, the detours, and even the path itself. I strongly encourage graduate students and ECP’s to enter this competition at next year’s convention. It was an incredible experience!

Happy to share my latest publication in the Journal of Family Theory & Review: Toward a Psychological Framework of Black Matrescence: Centering Mother-Daughter Bonds co-authored by my friend and colleague Olivia Snow, PhD. Black #Matrescence has been my jam for a while now. It's the term I use to describe the the uniquely racialized and gendered experience of becoming a mother as a Black woman. Here, we pay special attention to the critical relationship between mothers and daughters to further examine this transitional period. Brianna A. Baker, Ph.D shared thisOne month on the tenure track at CUNY School of Medicine! This month has been a mix of really big moments and really small ones. I’ve gotten to dream up new studies, build collaborations with incredible colleagues, celebrate two paper acceptances, help lead our Maternal Health Core community advisory board, and mentor students who are excited to do this work alongside me. But it’s also looked like… • Getting lost trying to find the bathroom. • Still not understanding how the office thermostat works. • Carrying my diploma frames across the city only to accidentally smack them into the bus doors (whoops) • Wondering whether I actually belong here… and then remembering that I worked really hard to get here. I’m learning every day, and I’m grateful that I get to build a research program centered on Black maternal mental health alongside such thoughtful colleagues, students, and community partners. P.S. Brianna A. Baker, Ph.D liked thisI know LinkedIn is a professional space. But I’m challenging myself to show up more holistically in the spaces I occupy, to remember that behind every title and professional identity is a whole person with a life, a family, a story, and experiences that shape how we move through the world. So, I’m giving myself permission to share something a little more personal. Here it goes. Over my lifetime, I’ve heard the saying, “We are standing on the shoulders of giants.” Lately, that saying has taken on a whole new meaning. Moving into our new home in Arizona has been such a special experience. Now, my kids attend the same school district I grew up in, the place where I formed lifelong friendships, was shaped by incredible teachers and mentors, and experienced so many of the moments that helped make me who I am today. Our new home sits on the very land where one of the largest General Motors Proving Grounds once stood, the place where my mom spent years cleaning their offices. And right next to us are the fields my dad once farmed. Now, a generation later, here we are, raising our children in the same land they immigrated to, with dreams of a better future for their children. Now, I stand with my family and my children harvesting the fruit of so much of what they worked and sacrificed for. It’s a beautiful reminder that the lives we build don’t begin with us. We are carrying forward the work, sacrifices, dreams, and love of those who came before us. We are quite literally standing on the shoulders of so many giants. And I’m incredibly grateful to be able to give my kids a piece of that legacy.

Baker, Ph.D liked thisThis week I successfully defended my dissertation, "Black Feeling: A History of Black Women’s Emotions in the Nineteenth Century" at Princeton University, surrounded by my family and friends. My village came from near and far to cheer me on as I became Dr. Camille Alyce Borders. I am thankful to my diligent advisor, Dr. Tera W. Hunter, and my committee members, Dr. Nicole Turner, Dr. Wallace Best, and Dr. Imani Perry. Next week, I begin my first semester as an Assistant Professor in the History department and the program in Africana at Bates College. Onward and upward with deep gratitude and grounding.

Baker, Ph.D liked thisAt the graduation of our psychology fellows every year at Yale there is a beautiful honoring of their hard work, dedication, and a coming together of the Yale community to honor the long road to get to this point as psychologists and their emerging future. It has been a complete joy to be on this road working with so many bright new psychologists in the field - one of the greatest joys in my work life. I am also so thankful for all the wonderful colleagues that I learn from every day, who do the hard work of teaching, supervising, providing clinical work and demonstrating what it means to walk alongside people as they share their narratives of challenges with mental illness and their journey to healing. I was beyond honored to receive this Distinguished Faculty Award from the Yale Department of Psychiatry - Psychology Training Program and to have Dr. Elizabeth Connors, our amazing Training Director give it to me. Thank you for this incredible honor.

Baker, Ph.D liked thisI had the deepest honor to serve as President of the Division 35, Society for the Psychology of Women for the American Psychological Association this past academic year 2025-2026, all culminating in our Annual Conference held each August (first week of August). I have to say I am late to posting or sharing because it was truly a whirlwind week and so incredibly intense, beautiful, and inspiring, with our meetings, symposiums, talks, poster sessions, times to just catch up and have fun... it has taken me weeks to ...yes catch up, process it, and reflect. Thank you to one of the most beautiful groups of people I have ever been able to have the honor to help lead and serve alongside. This has been one of the deepest honors of my life. I love the incredible dedication of our division to fight for equality, for social justice, for leaning in to difficult conversations, and for teaching me about leadership. I especially appreciate, with great humility, the grace and growth opportunities the division has offered me in a culture that is constantly struggling to fight the beast of oppression, racism, sexism, and so many other isms - I pray each and every day I can take the lessons friends and colleagues have kindly offered me to heart, continue to work towards anti-racism and fight bigotry and oppression, as we work towards a more just world. Thank you for letting me lead Division 35. You are forever in my heart and have changed me all for the better.

Baker, Ph.D liked thisI am honored to share an effort to establish the Ed Fisher International Student/Trainee Travel Scholarship through the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM). I was fortunate to have Ed as my PhD advisor at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and he was the one who introduced me to SBM. His scholarship and mentorship greatly shaped my growth as a behavioral health researcher. I am grateful for his commitment to supporting students and early-career researchers, including international scholars like me. This scholarship is a meaningful way to carry forward Ed’s legacy of mentorship and dedication to the next generation of behavioral medicine researchers. It will provide a $5,000 annual travel award to support an international student or postdoctoral trainee in attending the SBM Annual Meeting. Our goal is to raise $27,500 by September 18, 2026, with the first scholarship to be awarded at the 2027 SBM Annual Meeting in Atlanta. We are nearly halfway there, and gifts are currently being matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $7,500, by members of the organizing committee.

Baker, Ph.D liked thisI’m now in my 5th year on the tenure track, and technically in my second faculty position but same university (that is what happens when your original hiring school splits) If I’m honest, I feel I lost my footing, and at times lost my joy, during my first several years. My first faculty position started with a series of tough events and grief, and then the realization that perhaps I made myself appear attractive to an environment that was not a great fit. I have had to manage a certain degree of bias from colleagues, which at times felt like I’m not welcome in the acadmey. Further, my entire academic journey up until starting as faculty was driven by intrinsic motivation and curiosity. But as faculty, I was faced with external pressures, such as getting NIH funding and making my work “fit” what was of interest to an audience of biomedical clinicians; I started taking these incentives seriously as I felt my ability to do what I loved depended on it, but then I started losing my love for the work. I have learned that I’m truly not motivated by external pressures in ways that are productive, but sometimes I wish I was. Perhaps I’m more successful on the traditional metrics if I mostly ignore them and instead focus on what brings me a sense of joy and purpose. All in all, I have a learned a lot about myself and the values that best guide my own journey as an academic. I have also been pouring a great deal of love into myself outside of work. I’m intelligent, measured, resilient, and I have integrity.

Northwell SHELTER Team 💡 Social determinants of health account for 80% of health outcomes. Yet most healthcare systems weren't designed to address them. ➡️ This is Project SHELTER, a team from our #ClinicalScholars program who transformed how one of America's largest health systems by ensuring everyone has an opportunity to be healthy. The Challenge: Northwell Health—NY's largest healthcare system serving 10+ million people. Patients were treated for medical conditions while housing insecurity, food insecurity, and other social needs went unaddressed. Clinicians lacked training to screen for and navigate these issues. The Vision: What if we could leverage a major health system's resources to address social determinants upstream—in partnership with communities? The Leadership: Led by @JohannaMartinez, @ChristineChim, Shari Jardine, MPH, MA, Sonia Jacome, Kerlann Flowers, Stephanie Kubow, MPH, Jack Tocco, Omolara Thomas, and Zenobia Brown MD, MPH, this team demonstrated systems-level leadership: • Started with housing, expanded to all social needs • Built infrastructure—universal SDoH screening and navigation • Trained thousands of providers in health equity • Created partnerships—medical-legal, food as health programs • Invested in pipeline—Community Scholars for diverse future workforce The Impact: ✨ Universal SDoH screening across pediatrics and internal medicine ✨ 30% patient engagement with navigation services ✨ Medical-legal partnership established ✨ Food as Health programs launched ✨ System-wide health equity training ✨ Community Scholars expanding to new districts for 10 years What Makes This Replicable: Programs were designed with communities through focus groups and interviews, not for them. They built sustainable infrastructure addressing workforce training, clinical practice, and community partnerships simultaneously. My Reflection: What started as housing became a movement. This team proved large health systems can be engines for equity when they look beyond clinic walls and address root causes. They didn't just treat illness—they built health.
