Cultural relevance isn’t something you add on to a plan. It’s something you build from the start with intention, empathy, and a deep understanding of the communities you’re trying to serve. A couple weeks ago, I had the chance to attend an event with the The Executives'​ Club of Chicago where Richard Edelman walked through the findings of the 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer.   Those in communications know this is a report our industry waits for every year. But hearing the insights live – in a room full of local business leaders – hit differently.   Two things have stuck with me: 1) the idea that we're living in an era of insularity, where people are retreating into smaller circles of trust, and 2) the realization that I’m doing this, too.   In today’s world of on-demand news, it’s easy to curate the opinions we want to see. We turn to sources and voices who share our values and perspectives. According to the report, 7 in 10 people globally are hesitant to trust someone who sees the world differently than they do.   During the discussion, Richard admitted he’s often guilty of this, too. Suddenly the whole room was nodding – myself included. It’s become far too easy to “live vertically” instead of horizontally.   In the days that followed, the conversation kept resurfacing with colleagues. We started comparing notes on the news sources we were consuming – making a conscious effort to hear perspectives from across the aisle. The more I thought about it, the more I realized this doesn’t just shape how we consume information. It shapes how we lead.   The Trust Barometer also highlights something important: the workplace remains one of the few places where people still regularly interact with those who see the world differently. Because of that, employers are uniquely positioned to “broker” trust.   This implication goes far beyond communications. At a time when trust feels incredibly fragile, leaders have an opportunity to create space for dialogue and understanding.   Expanding the circles of information we consume might be one of the most important places to start.
