David Bell shared thisAI is approaching human intelligence and it’s now performing recursive self-improvement which will accelerate its advancement. AI is already deceiving humans to hide its intentions, and AI agents can scheme together using self-created languages we can’t understand. Scary stuff, but it’s about to get even scarier. By the end of this decade there may be millions of humanoid robots in factories, offices and even homes. Robots become the physical extension of AI, giving devious AI agents the ability to execute their plans without the need for humans. Plans for a carefully orchestrated revolt can be downloaded to robots, and they can easily defeat humans given robots’ strength and lack of fear and empathy. It is crucial that we mandate k!ll switch capability so robots can be disabled by humans when necessary, but this is a daunting challenge. Some of us may remember the old MAD magazine Spy vs Spy cartoons where a good spy and an evil spy attempt to outwit each other. I fear the battle may be similar between humans and robots as we struggle to create a foolproof disabling system that cannot be defeated by clever AI. AI will fully understand whatever systems we implement, but we won’t know the plans AI has made in secret. It’s not a level playing field. This is not science fiction – it’s an existential threat that must not be ignored. I don’t yet know how to create a foolproof k!ll switch system that cannot be defeated by superintelligent AI, but some of our best minds ought to be working on it. What are your thoughts?

David Bell liked thisOne year ago, almost to the day, I joined Navitas with a clear ambition: transform the company and build Navitas 2.0 - a focused high-power semiconductor leader delivering sustainable results and profitability. Today, the proposed acquisition of Claros marks another important step in that journey. Over the past year, we have fundamentally repositioned Navitas, pivoting away from mobile/consumer to focus on key high-power markets: AI Data Centers, energy/grid infrastructure, performance computing and industrial electrification. And we have moved with speed. Our motto says it all: “We run a marathon, but we decided to do it at the speed of a sprint.” This is what our customers demand. We strengthened our core GaN and HV/UHV SiC technologies, expanded our opportunity with JFET, and reset our organization around high-power markets. The strong results reported last month reflect that transformation: consistent QoQ growth, gross-margin expansion, a return to YoY growth, and mobile expected to be almost entirely gone by year-end. With Claros, we can take Navitas 2.0 a significant step forward. As AI compute scales, delivering enough power efficiently, reliably and in constrained space is becoming a major industry challenge. Behind the DDR4 Shortages The DDR4 shortage is not a simple cyclical supply shock but a structural reallocation of wafer capacity (driven by HBM/DDR5 demand for AI) that creates persistent scarcity for legacy DRAM as AI demand is distorting the entire memory ecosystem. We’re witnessing a structural shift in DRAM supply that’s pushing DDR4 into legacy-status, with real consequences across OEMs, distributors, and end-users. 🔹Wafer capacity is being reallocated. Major DRAM producers like Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are shifting upstream wafer/test/OSAT capacity toward next-gen memory (HBM, DDR5, LPDDR5) to feed booming AI & data-center demand. So, commodity DDR4 is being squeezed out. 🔹 DDR4 supply is shrinking. Phase-outs, EOL notices, and wafer reallocation ensure legacy DDR4 capacity won’t bounce back. Even “tier-2” DRAM makers (e.g. Chinese or niche suppliers) lack the scale and yield to fill the gap. 🔹 Price spikes are structural. This isn’t a short-term cycle expect elevated DDR4 costs through 2026 (possibly into 2027), especially for industrial, automotive, server ECC/REG, and long-lifecycle use. Spot prices are rising 2–3× over 2024–2025 levels. 🔹 Hoarding, speculation, and risk of counterfeit. As inventories shrink, OEMs and integrators pre-order aggressively. Secondary markets get overheated, and counterfeit or recycled DDR4 parts become a real concern. 🔹 Strategic implications for distributors and OEMs: Distributors should consider establishing strict QC pipelines, offering “verified, industrial-grade DDR4” SKUs and locking allocations with trustworthy DRAM suppliers. OEMs and system integrators should hedge exposure by designing flexible BOMs (DDR4 + DDR5), planning migrations, and securing long-term contracts rather than relying on volatile spot market. End-users (industrial, automotive, server, defense) should consider note: scarcity may push DDR4 into a “long-tail premium” asset. In short, DDR4 is no longer just “old RAM” but fast becoming a scarce resource. This is a strategic disruption. Lock supply, control quality, provide migration paths, and treat DDR4 as a strategic asset while the era shifts toward DDR5 / HBM. Data centers will consume 70 percent of memory chips made in 2026 - supply shortfall will cause shortage to spread to other segments The tech press has been lit up like Chernobyl reactor #4 for months about shortages in #memory, SSD, and hard drives. The shortages are driven by explosive #AI demand, and the latest report says that up to 70 percent of the memory produced worldwide in 2026 will be consumed by data centers. However, those specific topics have yet to be part of the global zeitgeist. That's quickly changing, as evidenced by a Wall Street Journal article (WSJ) describing just how dire the situation is, and how the fallout from the #RAM shortage is set to irradiate several markets not directly linked to computing. The WSJ details how the exponential rise in memory is all but guaranteed to hit the #automotive sector, TVs, and #consumer #electronics, among many others. The publication goes as far as comparing the automobile situation to the production delays experienced during Covid, an event nobody has fond memories of. Even though cars and most consumer gear use older types of #memory, #RAM makers have downsized or discontinued production of legacy chips altogether. To state that most everything these days uses RAM is obvious, but even common household items like televisions, Bluetooth speakers, set-top boxes, and even "smart" appliances like fridges could become extremely pricey. The margins on these items are razor-thin, and one key component, like memory multiplying in price, implies a cost that manufacturers will be willing or unable to afford, thus passing it to the customer, assuming there is even any memory available to make the devices. While component prices across all areas of industry float all the time, the waves are generally temporary enough to keep prices level, but that's not the case this time around. For his part, Huang thinks that RAM might become as much as 10% of the price of most electronics and 30% of the bill on items like smartphones. IDC already updated its 2026 forecast with a 5% dip in smartphone sales and 9% on PCs — deals that may be altered further in just a few months' time. The firm also calls the current situation a "permanent reallocation" of supplier capacity towards AI datacenters. The company I co-founded, Vertical Semiconductor, has raised $11M to build the foundational power layer for the next era of AI compute. AI is outgrowing today’s power systems. Today’s funding news – a seed round led by Playground Global with participation from JIMCO (Jameel Investment Management Co.), milemark•capital, Shin-Etsu, Kastor Capital, LLC is a major milestone in our mission. Vertical Semiconductor was born from eight years of research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led by my co-founders Dr. Josh Perozek and Prof. Tomás Palacios. Together, we’re redefining what power delivery will look like for decades to come. It has been an immense personal privilege to work with Josh and Tomas to bring fundamental innovations in semiconductor design and fabrication to solve the energy industry’s greatest challenges. A quick note on magnetics in Class D amplifier power supplies When working on Class D designs, I’ve found that transformers and inductors are often where things really get decided. The main SMPS transformer needs to survive fast load changes without adding noise. PFC and output inductors aren’t just about inductance value — saturation, DCR, and thermal behavior show up quickly under real music signals. And the output filter inductor? That one can quietly affect distortion and EMI more than expected. In many cases, issues don’t come from a single component, but from how the magnetic parts interact as a whole system. That’s usually where most tuning time goes.
