Dave Chiang reposted thisDave Chiang reposted thisRunning a small business takes grit. As a small business owner myself, I know how much time, energy, and heart it takes to make things work. That’s why this one means a lot. Zoom has been named one of Inc. Magazine Power Partners for 2025, recognized in the General Excellence category for helping small and mid-sized businesses grow and thrive. SMBs are the heartbeat of every economy. They’re creative, scrappy, and constantly finding ways to do more with less. They don’t have time for complicated tech stacks or tools that slow them down. SMBs need solutions that just work. That’s what we focus on at Zoom… making connection simple, powerful, and human. We are grateful for every small business that trusts us to be part of your journey. You remind us what real innovation looks like.

Dave Chiang liked thisDave Chiang liked thisI technically managed Susan St. Ledger. But, she pretty much managed me. We hired Susan from Salesforce to help us take Buddy Media public. She'd brought in many of their largest customers. Most of her meetings with me went like this: Susan: "Why are you doing it like this?" Me: "We don't know any other way." Susan: "This makes no sense. We need to do it like this." Me: "OK. Then let's do it like that." I was the founder. But Susan had done this before. We hadn't. She challenged us because she knew better. And we would never have positioned the company to go public without her. Your ego wants agreement. Your company needs friction. Most founders hire people who follow their lead. The best founders hire people who challenge it. Who challenges you the most?

Dave Chiang liked thisCamber is #1 on DAB, the Data Agent Benchmark from UC Berkeley's EPIC Data Lab. First submission. We tuned context for the benchmark's datasets. So did everyone at the top — you can't compete here otherwise. That sounds like a caveat on the benchmark's validity. It's actually the most interesting thing in the result. Every entrant at the top hand-built context for 12 specific datasets across 4 database systems. The leaderboard isn't ranking general data agents — it's ranking each team's context engineering. There's a harness, and there's the context you feed it, and the latter is what makes the difference. This is exactly the situation in the real world. An agent explaining retention gaps between web and mobile users needs different context than one parsing a fresh Federal Reserve release — different schemas, different definitions, different Universes. No general model arrives understanding the data Universe you work in. That mechanism is our product. Camber is a coding agent in the cloud that turns context engineering into a deployable, governed agent: built for one problem domain, evolved as the ground changes, shared with whoever you want. #1 on DAB says our mechanism for producing tuned context is well-engineered. That's the starting point, not our score. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/gYPhNsGd

Our fastest product ever to reach this milestone, and one of the fastest-growing ads businesses in the world. It was just a few months ago here I announced the launch of self-serve and the roll out of CPC bidding. 20K+ advertisers. 40+ countries. And we are just getting started. Don’t blink. Dave Chiang reacted on thisDave Chiang reacted on thisFor 20 years, I’ve been attracted to “what might be, but isn’t yet” adventures in media. It's honestly been more intuition than analysis, but it’s led me to some amazing builds and to my newest role. First it was business content during the financial crisis, then commerce-powered programmatic at eBay and standard-setting retail media in Walmart Connect, and finally RMN platform-building with Instacart and Criteo. But this month, it’s drawn me to Dutchie, where I’m the new SVP of Retail Media in … cannabis tech. Yeah, I didn’t see that one coming either. Dutchie is a retail tech platform that enables all the things for 6,500 retailers: physical point-of-sale, ecommerce, payments, inventory management, brand-funded discounts, loyalty & marketing, and even in-store displays. We have already processed over $100B in sales and operate the commerce rails for 2/3rds of legal cannabis sales in the US every day – who wouldn’t want to build a retail media business on top of that deliciously connected system? So, I’m doing that now. Thank you to Spencer Scott, Tim Barash, Chris Ostrowski, Bobby Asplund and Nick DeLeonardis for bringing me in; thanks to Liana Benson, Leigh Gerding and Mark Green for letting me crash their party. I brought snacks.

Dave Chiang liked thisDave Chiang liked thisToday is my last post for Embrace and my first at Palo Alto Networks. The act of being acquired is simultaneously both a happy and sad occasion. *Happy* I get to join an amazing team in a rare leadership position at the center of the AI disruption. I'm super excited for an entirely new set of stimuli - a primary driver of my happiness - through a new product set, a platformization strategy, and a scale I could not have imagined. *Sadness* This is the part founders never write or admit: a successful exit is not the mark of success. Success is the way my team expressed their emotions on learning of the acquisition. Of course they were excited! Their lives had just changed, professionally and economically. They were about to embark on a new set of challenges! Even so, they felt sadness because the team and culture they had built and invested in was about to transition. The word I heard the most was "family". At no other company I've founded have I seen a team bound like a family. And that "family" is sincerely what I'm most proud of. (Palo Alto Networks is fortunate to have you all!) Immeasurable thanks to Fredric Newberg, Andrew Tunall, Kathryn Blake, Victoria Stepp, Vitaliy Fuks, and all my family members. Thanks to my extended family - Aaron Jacobson, Dan Wright, Baris Aksoy, Hadley Harris, George Ugras, and Dana Settle. And thanks to my new family - Martin Mao, Nikesh Arora, Lee Klarich, Tim Van Tuyle. In the immortal words of Embrace: LFG!!

Dave Chiang liked thisDave Chiang liked thisRetail media has grown incredibly fast. But anyone actually doing this work knows that growth also comes with a lot of complexity behind the scenes. If we want the industry to keep moving forward, we have to get better at solving some of that complexity together. That means agency leaders, brands, and retailers being in the same room and talking the same language to better understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where we can build better ways of working. That’s why I’m excited to be part of Media in Retail (MiR), powered by RETHINK Retail, alongside Claudia Johnson, Jason O'Toole, Sean Crawford, Amie Owen, Jason Wescott, Briana Finelli and other leaders actively doing this work. What I like about MiR is that it’s grounded in the realities of operating retail media every day. It’s a chance to learn from each other, tackle some of the friction that comes with a rapidly evolving channel, and ultimately help our teams and clients build smarter, more sustainable commerce strategies. There’s still a lot of opportunity to shape what good looks like in retail media. I’m looking forward to being part of the group helping do that! If you’re working through these same challenges, come join us. Learn more and apply: https://lnkd.in/gbyR47Gh #MediaInRetail #RetailMedia #CommerceMedia WPP Media

Dave Chiang liked thisDave Chiang liked thisWhy do leaders spend so much time on the "smart" side of business and so little on getting healthy? Three subtle biases get in the way: 1. The Sophistication Bias When we hit a hard problem, we assume it requires a complicated solution. So we add policies and processes to fix simple behaviors—like putting up signs in the office bathroom reminding adults of basic etiquette. What’s really happening? We don't trust our people to do basic things. We think the "signs" help, but they actually erode trust by signaling that management doesn't trust the team. Instead of adding another policy, we just need to do the hard work of building trust. 2. The Adrenaline Bias We let urgency and back-to-back calendars dictate our daily lives until busyness becomes an addiction. But race car drivers know you have to slow down into a turn to take it fast. In leadership: Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. 3. The Quantification Bias We want a metric for everything. Organizational health is hard to quantify, so it constantly loses priority to things that are easy to put on a spreadsheet. But how do you measure the love in a marriage? You can’t put a score on it, but you know instantly when it’s healthy and when it’s not. None of these look like mistakes while you're making them. Which of these three do you see stall executive teams the most? #buildtrust #slowdown #gettinghealthy #leader #bias

Dave Chiang liked thisDave Chiang liked thisMedia in Retail started with the retailers. Today it gets bigger. When we launched MiR - a new community by RETHINK Retail - we made a deliberate choice to build the foundation with the people operating retail media inside retailers. That foundation is set. Now we're welcoming our newest founding cohorts: leaders from the brand and agency side of this industry. This matters because retail media only works when all three sides of the table understand each other, and are building towards mutually beneficial growth. One of our core goals is to close the gap between how retailers sell and how brands and agencies actually buy. And the craft only gets better when it's built together. Brands and agencies aren't guests in this community; they're co-owners of where it goes. Finally, and most importantly, the next generation of leaders is coming up on every side of this industry. Developing them together is going to help propel our industry even further. What makes this room different: it's practitioner-first, there's no sales agenda, and everyone in it is there to make the work better. To our new members: welcome. To the retail partners who signed up early to help shape this community, your inputs have been instrumental. To the partners that believed in us from the start, Vantage - the operating system for retail media and the company I work for, and Vusion - a global retail technology leader that digitizes physical stores - thank you for your support And to the entire team at Rethink Retail - Marie, Shahar, Adam, Jeremy and more, thank you! More to come — including what we're building for NRF Retail Media Day in January. But I just wanted say a heartfelt thank you to everyone participating in this community. If you want to get involved, link in the comments. Welcome to the community Christine Foster, Rolf Oosterhoff, John K. Carlson, Josh Clarkson, Mary Katherine Woltz, Juliana Nodwell, Nicole Lesinski, Cristina Marinucci, Claudia Johnson, Jill Cruz, Jason Wescott, Renee Caceres, Amie Owen, Elizabeth Neubauer-Donovan, Briana Finelli, Sean Crawford, and Jason O'Toole!!

We are witnessing a profound misallocation of capital and intellect. Look at the streets of San Francisco (where I just returned to reality from). We have access to unprecedented engineering capabilities, yet billions in venture capital are mobilized to solve the mild inconvenience of picking up lunch. The framing of these delivery robots as entering a storytelling era is pure behavioral manipulation. People originally wanted to kick the faceless coolers into the street because they were a nuisance. Giving them digital eyes and candy-colored plastic is a calculated way to exploit human empathy. These companies are manipulating affection to subsidize last-mile logistics and secure free right-of-way on crowded public sidewalks. There is certainly value in the underlying navigation and spatial awareness algorithms. We will eventually extract beneficial learnings for serious, helpful use cases. But right now, this is a shockingly wasteful use of technology. It feeds an insulated population and highlights a staggering level of entitlement. We are optimizing for the trivial friction points of a specific zip code rather than tackling complex, meaningful problems. When we celebrate a smiling robot delivering a burrito as peak innovation, we have lost the plot on purpose.

MGMT Boston • 9K followers
🐶 Patrol is building an AI native accessibility platform for e-commerce, starting with Shopify merchants, to make the rails of commerce run better for all 🐶 It's W12 / Q3 / 25 & this week in our MGMT Boston startup series we’ve got Patrol, a platform helping small businesses and emerging enterprises become ADA compliant by automating auditing, user-testing, and custom software development work. Early in his career, Sam Rotner worked in e-commerce sales at Privy as one of their top reps. He saw an overlooked pain point merchants often experienced in the form of web accessibility compliance. Web accessibility isn’t just about user experience. It comes with legal liability. In 2024 alone, more than 10,000 ADA lawsuits and demand letters were filed in the U.S. over inaccessible websites, mostly targeting small-to-mid-sized e-commerce brands. Many demand letters quietly settle for tens of thousands of dollars. The Shopify ecosystem alone counts 2.6M stores and GMV is approaching $300B. That’s a lot of moolah and accessibility demands will only grow. Almost 20% of the U.S. population has a reported disability - that’s 50M+ Americans! Sam teamed up with MIT engineering leader Nico van Wijk to build a scalable solution that could solve this thorny, ongoing, expensive problem served by outdated incumbents who didn’t (or couldn’t) serve the long tail of e-commerce. The market deserves a better solution. With an AI powered approach and multi-agent workflows, Patrol is building a system that audits, tests, and deletes inaccessible code and adds accessible code directly to a brand's codebase. Non-technical Heads of E-commerce or Brand owners can also simply select violations and create an accessible theme with the underlying code changes in a few clicks! Since launching in January 2025, Patrol has already landed dozens of customers, ranging from high-growth Shopify brands doing a few million in sales to $100M+ in GMV. They’ve crossed six figures in revenue, are currently adding 5-10 great brands a month, and haven’t yet turned on a single GTM resource. The rest of 2025 is all about nailing the product experience and then 2026 will be about scaling. Hiring is currently focused on Customer Success and Partnerships with demand generation to follow. Patrol recently moved into its own office in Kendall Square, where their team is working away to fulfill their vision to become one of Boston’s next great e-commerce software companies. Patrol is proudly Boston-backed by NextView Ventures (who led their Pre-Seed round) with more great Boston firms around the hoop! If you’re in Kendall Square looking to learn more, stop by or e-mail Sam at sam@patrolapp.ai.
