Few are asking the harder question: can AI drive a business outcome and actually close the deal? That's the question we're putting on the table today. After many years building billing infrastructure for the world's most complex businesses, here's what I know: the resulting transaction is where business value lives or dies. Not the conversation that precedes it. So here's what our customers are saying and what the AI industry needs to hear: - Billing systems are the single best system of commercial truth in any enterprise because they represent the reality between customer and supplier, and AI is useless without a system of truth to act on. No other system owns the financial history, entitlements, obligations, usage patterns and real-time commercial state that governs what AI can responsibly recommend or execute. - The worldwide shift to usage-based monetization isn't a trend. It's the new normal. Our launch of Aria Allegro™ isn't coincidental timing. It's the result of knowing for years that consumption-first monetization was coming for every industry, not just AI-native ones. - AI's ultimate promise isn't a better chatbot or vibe coding. It's consummating a real-world transaction. And what is one of the key places where that happens? In the billing system. That's where offers get applied, payments get triggered, credits get issued, churn detected/pre-empted and upsell opportunities flagged - thus commercial terms get changed. Billing doesn't support the outcome. Billing IS the outcome. It is indeed a mission critical system of record, but extends to be a system of ACTION. - Billing data is solid gold for AI. Recommendations and agentic actions are only as good as the data informing them. There is no richer, more accurate, or more commercially consequential dataset in the enterprise than billing data. If your AI isn't grounded in it, your AI is guessing. - AI providers need to monetize their own solutions, and billing is generating the tokens to do it. With 40-60% of customer call center interactions carrying a billing-related component, no domain drives more AI token consumption. The companies building AI infrastructure need to think hard about that. The first wave of AI was about engagement and automation. The next wave is about execution. We built Aria to win that wave. My Plebe Summer ended 18 years ago, yet it still feels like yesterday. I got out of the Navy 7 years ago, yet it still feels like yesterday. Getting promoted to LTjg still feels like yesterday, yet if I stayed in the Navy, I’d be putting on O-5 in the near future. The moral of the story? The “good old days” are happening right now. Be thankful and treasure them while you can. Go Navy.
