As I’ve learnt from my own sales experience, a great sales pitch is not about closing the deal – it’s about forming a relationship with your customer, and creating the potential for a longer-term business partnership. I've been saying this for years to fellow reps and they tend to give up too fast.Heath Messer shared thisHere are some sales stats. 2% of sales are made on the first contact 3% of sales are made on the second contact 5% of sales are made on the third contact 10% of sales are made on the fourth contact 80% of sales are made on the fifth to twelfth contact The gold is in the follow-up. In fact, sales follow-up is the biggest problem most businesses face. That's why learning follow-up methods is a game changer and a way to dominate your market. If you follow up better than the competition, you’ll win big. BUT it's not about a fixed number of calls. It's about making as many calls as it takes, until you become a master closer. Remember, the more calls you make, the more opportunities you create, and the more sales you'll eventually rack up.

"Hi [First Name], I hope you're doing well. I wanted to reach out because I think our solution could help your company grow revenue. Would you be open to a quick 15-minute call to discuss?" This is the EXACT message that worked in 2019. It's also the EXACT reason response rates have dropped 68% since then. Every buyer gets this same generic garbage 20 times a day. They can spot template language from a mile away. Meanwhile our best rep sent 50 messages last week and booked 8 meetings. His approach? He actually researches people. "Saw your post about the challenge with customer churn in Q3. We just helped [Similar Company] reduce churn by 34% using a specific approach to onboarding. Worth a conversation?" Specific. Relevant. Valuable. He's not pitching. He's connecting dots between their problem and his experience. The companies still doing spray and pray are wondering why their SDR teams aren't working anymore. The companies that evolved to research-based outreach are crushing it. Volume is dead. Value is everything. Heath Messer liked thisHeath Messer liked thisIn my 10+ years of B2B tech sales, I’ve seen more deals stall in “no decision” — not due to losing to competitors, but to status quo and omission bias (the fear of making a wrong decision). 🚨Tactics like time-based discounts or FOMO messaging work best with warm inbounds who already trust your brand. But for more complex, high-stake deals with multiple stakeholders, I’ve found the JOLT method to be far more effective. Example: A 25-year industry veteran came in as a warm referral but hesitated due to onboarding and data migration concerns. Despite the referral, he was still evaluating options — classic status quo bias. I connected him with a current customer to address uncertainty, framed the conversation around loss aversion, and instead of deep discounts, we adjusted contract terms to reduce risk. After a series of a few calls we got the deal done and the customer is live. ✅ Lesson: People are more motivated to avoid loss than to pursue gain. Help them feel safe in choosing change. The purpose of this post is was to shed some light to a method I’ve started to incorporate with larger deals and cold prospects added from outbound. What’s else would you add?
