Jackson DeLay shared thisA decade of memories. I'm filled with gratitude as I reflect on my time at the Chiefs. I feel grateful to have spent the last 10 years working alongside my incredibly talented coworkers at 1 Arrowhead Drive. I'm proud of all we've been able to accomplish together, but more than anything I'm thankful for the memories and relationships. I've been blessed with opportunities I never thought I'd have. Attending four Super Bowls, winning three, and experiencing it all with my family. While I'm excited for my next opportunity, that post is for another day. Today I'm filled with gratitude for everything I was able to experience over the last 10 years. The list of people to tag is too long, but I'm incredibly appreciative of those who supported, encouraged, and taught me along the way. Thanks again, I will always count myself as a part of Chiefs Kingdom!

Jackson DeLay liked thisJackson DeLay liked thisI got on a Zoom a few minutes early last week. Two people were already on the call comparing how busy they were. Just hearing them discuss busyness dipped me into my own anxiety, like a cone from Dairy Queen. I felt these tiny sips of breath in my chest, as if time was collapsing in on itself. Once you listen for that B word, you can’t un-hear it. In the neighborhood, at a youth sports game, in a team meeting, or the client’s board room. “Staying busy?” “What’s keeping you busy these days?” “Ugh, I’m just so busy.” I’ve said it too. And meant it, felt it, and believed it. We wear busyness like a badge. Running ragged, hurrying from and towards everything but the moment we’re in. A few mornings ago I read a line in Mark 2. It was about old clothes, new wine, and fasting. One kind of obscure part was Jesus talking about not sewing a new patch onto an old cloak, or “its fullness pulls away.” Fullness. Outside of leaving a Mexican restaurant or Andy’s Frozen Custard, you don’t hear that word much. Definitely not in the same breath as busy. Can you imagine these questions instead: “Staying full?” “What’s keeping you full these days?” “Wow, my life is so full.” Isn’t there a massive, mysterious distinction between those two words and realities? And isn’t fullness what we’re after, after all? When we slow down long enough to let it sink in, fullness of life is a helluva lot more intriguing than a busy life. Fullness assumes abundance, vitality, growth, aliveness, meaning, purpose, and yes, even exhaustion. Busyness, on the other hand, assumes constriction, tightness, shortness, scarcity, hurry, and depletion. All of which I’ve experienced, and it never leaves me wanting more. That distinction seems to lead to a world of difference. Because you can’t stitch a full life onto a busy one. The fullness pulls away.

Jackson DeLay liked thisJackson DeLay liked thisSocial media saves lives. 🫶 5 years ago, our CEO was contacted on LinkedIn about a really special woman (our now friend, Jo), facing a disease that would require her to eventually need a living kidney donor. They were looking for ideas and concepts to find a willing donor via social media - not a small ask. Because Lori Jo Vest 🏁 is Lori, she decided we would take on the mission as a pro bono project and help Jo find her hero. We built a website, created social pages, and got to work on a campaign to find Jo a kidney. Over the last few years, Social Media Manager Molly Wagner, has led PopSpeed's charge in searching for potential donors over regular video chats to discuss progress and posts, and after years of calls and catch ups, they've developed a real friendship. A couple of weeks ago, our friend Jo received her kidney. To say this project has been rewarding would be the understatement of the century. As a team, we're unbelievably proud of the power of our work. As Jo's friends, we're so grateful to see her embark on her healing journey. I initially joined as a contractor to help build our point of view on AI, and I have been in the thick of it ever since. That vision is one of the key reasons I was so keen to stay and lead the marketing function. Thank you to Jessica Skon, Henrik Ekelund, Joe DiFilippo, Philios Andreou, and Joel Sigrist for the opportunity. And to BTSers everywhere, the welcome started before my first day and has not let up since. That is a special culture that I do not take for granted. It was a routine, friendly call, that ended with me saying we’d get him a quote ASAP. I saved his number in my phone. “Roger Duncan”. A few minutes later, he called back. “Hey Roger.” “Hello Justin. I’ve been doing a bit of research, and it appears you do other things besides power washing.” I was in full on Squids sales mode, “Well, yessir we do. We also do window cleaning..." He laughed. “No, I mean, besides Squids. I see you’re the Founder of a branding agency called Guild Collective. Is that a legitimate enterprise?” Then I laughed. “Oh, I see. Yessir, Guild is the way I feed my family. And our team is most definitely legitimate.” “Well, I’m Rodger Dean Duncan, and if you’re open to it, I’d like to meet with you. I’ve reviewed your website, and your team, and I may need a little help.” He’d done his homework. The kind of thoughtful, specific research that tells you you’re dealing with someone who has potency in his presence. So I googled him. And realized a lot. Including I'd spelled his name wrong. The two of us met. We met again with our Guild team. And finally, we led a positioning workshop, framing up some ways for him to share the profound professional stories he has to tell. We sat with one of the most humble, but accomplished people I’d met in a long time. Former White House communication counsel. Advisor to cabinet officers and U.S. senators. Head of global communications at Campbell Soup. Consultant to companies like IBM, American Airlines, Hallmark, eBay. Author of the award-winning Change-friendly Leadership. A guy who has rubbed shoulders with Stephen Covey, including an endorsement from Covey about his book, ““Brilliantly insightful and inspiring; profound, yet user-friendly; visionary, yet highly practical.” I gifted him a copy of Give a Damn. He read it. Quickly. And liked it. Then, with a smile like he was keeping the best kind of secret, he offered to interview me for his Forbes column. That piece went live yesterday. I’m proud of it. And grateful for access to his audience. But the real story isn’t the article. It’s the series of small doors that led to it. That led to Rodger. A power washing inquiry. A second phone call. A few meetings. A book exchange. I knew something significant was taking shape, but I didn’t know the precise form. That’s how most of the best things show up on the scene. Quietly, sideways, small, and without a roadmap for where they might lead. Meeting Rodger has been one of the greatest gifts of my year. Not because of the Forbes byline, but because of the man himself. His depth, his generosity, his storytelling, his contagious laughter, and the way he still chooses to give a damn about other people’s work. Life keeps handing us these small doors. Most of the time we don’t know what’s on the other side. Yet the invitation is to keep walking through them. Sometimes, they lead to people like Rodger.
