Jason Cho liked thisJason Cho liked thisBack in 2016 Zach Gibson, Rachel Been and Brendan Pascoe hit me up about a contract position to ”help us evolve our design system”. After going through 3+ interview processes and never making it to a role, I was feeling a little burnt by Google. But I couldn’t pass on this dream project. I started as a contractor designing out hypothetical products to showcase the flexibility of what Material could be. Soon after I converted to FTE and owned big portions of Google's design system, from a bunch of components, typography, layout, states systems to collaborating deeply with engineering on the logic around how we systematically build a theme-able interface (shout out to all my eng partners). I fell in love with doing design sprints internally and with third parties around the world to adopt Material. & Yasmine Evjen finally convinced me to get out of my comfort zone and on stage at Google I/O. 8 years later I still use Material Design every day, whether it’s making products or using them. Working on Material Design was & is a total dream – I am so grateful to be a part of it. In a world where anyone can build, the winners will understand context and needs best. At Amplitude and Uber, we started down this path with interactive prototypes that let our execs and stakeholders experience designs instead of reviewing static mocks. But now, at Evisort, this is becoming our default way of working. Decisions that used to take weeks can now happen in a single meeting or async over Slack. What I'm seeing now is that the code is valuable. But in the AI era, the real value is shifting from code to context. User understanding and design judgment informing what to build, combined with speed, is the new moat. As AI democratizes execution, it can't tell you which problem is worth solving or what users will actually use. The teams moving with purpose and velocity aren't the ones with the most developers. They're the ones with the clearest understanding of user context. Without domain expertise guiding what gets built, you end up with feature bloat. With it, you get expert-driven execution. The future of design is expanding beyond UX into AX: Agent Experience. Like John Maeda mentioned in his report: We’re no longer designing only for humans navigating screens. We’re designing for AI agents executing tasks. Agents don’t browse. They interpret. They don’t tolerate ambiguity. They depend on structure. That means our work shifts from polishing interfaces to defining systems — clear APIs, explicit permissions, clean data, unambiguous logic. The next generation of products won’t just be user-friendly. They’ll be agent-ready. A clear interface for the machine. An invisible one for the human.
