I am grateful every day that we get to provide these important spaces and experiences for girls of North Texas.Jennifer Kiehl Bartkowski shared thisThis weekend, The New York Times published a moving essay by a mother and scout leader reflecting on the confidence, grit, and leadership her daughter found through outdoor adventure and the path to becoming an Eagle Scout. I read it with admiration for her daughter and for every young person who discovers what they are capable of when they are challenged, supported, and trusted to lead. I also read it as an invitation to lift up what Girl Scouting is and has always been: a place where girls build courage, confidence, and character in ways as varied, ambitious, and powerful as girls themselves. Girl Scouts have been outdoors since 1912: exploring, sleeping under the stars, and discovering the joy and accomplishment that comes from doing hard things together. The first troops camped, hiked, canoed, and even played basketball at a time when these activities were considered unsuitable for girls. More than a century later, Girl Scouts are still outside. They’re backcountry trekking, whitewater rafting, cooking five-star meals over a fire, learning wilderness first aid, and cheering each other on when the trail gets tough. But Girl Scouting has never been just one thing, because girls have never fit into one box. You will find Girl Scouts in the woods and on the water, in robotics labs and music studios, in fire gear on a six-story ladder and in city council chambers. Our founder Juliette Gordon Low created a space designed especially for girls—an original promise; not one to be adapted for them down the road. She believed all girls deserve adventure, friendship, and the confidence to step into any room or onto any trail knowing they belong. One hundred and fourteen years later, we’re still here, holding up that promise. More than 50 million women are Girl Scout alums. They are doctors, teachers, engineers, artists, athletes, park rangers, entrepreneurs, astronauts, philanthropists, public servants, CEOs, and leaders in communities around the world. Their stories began in different ways, but each carries the same thread: a girl tried something new, found her voice, led with purpose, and learned she could do more than she imagined. These stories make up the legacy of our Movement, and I invite others to share theirs. Give us your memories of outdoor adventures, favorite badges, hard-earned confidence, lifelong friendships, and the times you surprised yourself by doing the thing you thought you could never do. That is the story of Girl Scouting. And it is one worth telling—proudly, generously, and often.

One of these girls is a Gold Award Girl Scout and the other two are on their way. They took this opportunity to practice the Democratic process very seriously, studying and preparing to place their votes on behalf of the Girl Scout movement. They give me great hope for our future.

I had the honor of welcoming the incoming Leadership Dallas Class of 2027 as the current Alumni Council Chair. Looking around the room, I was reminded how much talent this region holds- leaders who give their time, their expertise, and their hearts to this region, often without asking for recognition in return. Beyond meeting so many new leaders in the incoming class, I had the joy of reconnecting with fellow alumni and classmates; a reminder that this program builds a living network, not just a graduating cohort. I was especially grateful to spend time with the past three chairs: Jonathan Blum, Jennifer Kiehl Bartkowski, and Renda Mathew. Each of them shaped Leadership Dallas in ways that still echo today, and I carry a real sense of responsibility in continuing the vision they entrusted to me. Leadership succession isn’t just about handing off a title; it’s about honoring what was built and having the discipline to build on it, not just from it. Thank you to the DRC Leadership Programs and Hôtel Swexan for hosting a night that set the tone for what this class will become. Jennifer Kiehl Bartkowski liked thisJennifer Kiehl Bartkowski liked thisSometimes, in the hustle of the day-to-day, there’s a moment that reminds you that the work, the sacrifice, and the journey have made an impact. Learning that I—a first-generation college graduate from Pleasant Grove -was nominated for the Dallas-Fort Worth Urban League Young Professionals Inaugural 100 Most Influential Young Professionals Under 40 was one of those moments. My heart for service started long before I had the words for it. In fifth grade, my mom came home to a backyard full of neighborhood kids because I decided we needed a place for after-school enrichment. I didn’t know the language of community development, advocacy, or economic opportunity. I simply wanted the kids on my block to feel seen, supported, and connected. That same heart has carried me throughout my career—from serving Texas youth and advancing workforce development for individuals and families, to shaping programs and policies that promote inclusion and accessibility, and now championing initiatives that provide North Texans access to opportunities and vital resources needed to thrive. In many ways, it reflects the opportunity my own family sought when we moved from Tulsa to North Texas in 1992. Through every chapter, my purpose has remained simple: “serve others well and encourage others to do the same.” To be recognized for that service by the community that helped shape me is a full-circle moment I don’t take lightly. To every person I’ve had the privilege to serve, every colleague who has served alongside me, and every leader who saw something in me and helped cultivate it—thank you. I receive this “God wink” with a grateful heart—a reminder to keep serving, keep growing, and keep making room for impact along the way. You never know who may be watching and inspired to serve, too. 💛

As the world mourns her loss, I can’t help but think about what she taught us about how to live, lead, and treat others. Here's the question, I have been sitting with... how do we be more like Dolly? How do we show up for people in a way that, when we leave a job, a team (or this world), people truly feel the loss of our presence? A few lessons, I will take from her: - Know that success and kindness can coexist. Dolly reached incredible heights without ever making kindness seem like a weakness. - Lift others as you climb. Through her philanthropy, especially the Imagination Library, she used her success to create opportunities for millions of others. - Be yourself. Dolly never seemed to change who she was to fit the room. She knew exactly who she was, and she was proud of it. - Don’t confuse humility with playing small. Dolly could laugh at herself, poke fun at her image, and still know her worth. - And perhaps most importantly, make people feel good in your presence. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel connected to her... even when we had never met her in real life. May we all live, lead, and build relationships in a way that makes our presence matter and our absence felt.
