Stripped down to just a man and his acoustic guitar, it’s one of the most honest portraits of existential fatigue ever put to tape. What makes this clip extra special is seeing David Crosby and Joni Mitchell sitting right there adjacent to Stephen as he plays. Joni in particular is totally locked in, visibly moved by every line—a master songwriter completely transfixed by another at the height of his powers. Writing something that heavy and melancholic at just twenty-four years old—capturing that exact feeling of working like the devil only to face an inner, emotional poverty—takes a rare kind of vulnerability. Jon Ferrara shared this🎸 52 years ago tonight — July 13, 1974 — I was at The Forum in Inglewood for The J. Geils Band, with Peter Frampton and Italy's Premiata Forneria Marconi opening. The J. Geils Band was one of my first loves in music — my older brother Pat put Bloodshot and Live: Full House in my hands, and those records never left my turntable. Born out of Worcester, Massachusetts — a hard-working, blue-collar city that produced America's hardest-working band. They toured close to 300 nights a year and earned their reputation as the best live blues-rock act in America. That night at the Forum, they were at their absolute peak — frontman Peter Wolf spinning and jiving a mile a minute, Magic Dick tearing the roof off with "Whammer Jammer." And here's something we didn't know in the seats: "Must of Got Lost" was brand new that night. It wouldn't hit the charts until that fall, becoming their biggest hit of the 70s. The undercard was history in the making too. Peter Frampton, fresh off Humble Pie and grinding out his solo career, played to a crowd that mostly didn't know his name — exactly two years later I'd watch him fill Anaheim Stadium at the height of Frampton Comes Alive! And PFM, the Italian prog band on ELP's Manticore label, arrived just as I was transitioning from Deep Purple, Zeppelin, and Sabbath toward Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd. One bill, both halves of my musical life. The epilogue still stings. MTV made J. Geils the biggest band in America with "Centerfold" and "Freeze-Frame" — and that success broke them. Peter Wolf, the band's frontman and lead vocalist, wanted to stay true to the blues; keyboardist Seth Justman chased the pop sound. Wolf was gone by '83 and the magic went with him. Funny that Spotify ranks the pop hits as their best — anyone who stood in that room in '74 knows the real J. Geils Band was the one sweating through "Detroit Breakdown" and "Southside Shuffle." Jon Ferrara shared thisA MIT professor taught the same lecture every January for 40 years. Every single time, it was standing room only. His name was Patrick Winston. The lecture is called How to Speak. His opening line: Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas — in that order. Not your GPA. Not your pedigree. Not your IQ. How you communicate is what separates people who get heard from people who get ignored. Here's the framework he drilled into MIT students for four decades. Never open with a joke. Open by telling people exactly what they're going to learn. Prime the pump before you pour anything in. Winston called it the "empowerment promise" — give your audience a reason to stay in their seats within the first 60 seconds. The 5S Rule for making ideas stick: Symbol, Slogan, Surprise, Salient, Story. Every idea worth remembering hits at least three of these. The "near miss" technique: Don't just show what's right — show what almost looks right but isn't. That contrast is when the brain actually locks something in permanently. Never end with a summary. End with a contribution. Don't recap what you said. Tell people what you gave them that they didn't have before they walked in. Winston passed away in 2019. The lecture is still free on MIT OpenCourseWare — one hour, watched by millions, and it costs absolutely nothing. The most important class MIT ever put on the internet isn't about code or math. It's about how to make people actually listen to you. Patrick Winston's "How to Speak" is genuinely legendary. It's one of the most-watched MIT OpenCourseWare videos ever, and it holds up remarkably well — the 2018 recording (his last) is the one most people have seen. Winston was a giant in AI research too — he led MIT's AI lab for decades — but this annual lecture became its own kind of institution. The fact that students packed the hall every January for 40 years, even when they could have just watched a recording, says something about how good it was in person. A few things from the lecture that tend to stick with people beyond what was in that post: The "board vs. slides" debate — he was pretty opinionated that whiteboards force a speaker to slow down and let ideas breathe, while slides often become a crutch that disconnects the audience. Informing vs. inspiring — he distinguished between talks meant to teach something and talks meant to move people, and argued most speakers conflate the two and fail at both. The "Winston Star" — his framework for how ideas spread through a field, which is relevant well beyond academia.
