KalVista began more than a decade ago as an ophthalmology biotech in England. Kyle LaHucik shared thisMPM BioImpact set up K2 Therapeutics in Singapore to scour the proliferation of experimental medicines available for licensing in China. K2, somewhat of a twist on the popular NewCo model, has collected a few assets so far and plans to continue combining "the best of both worlds," executive chair and MPM founder Ansbert Gadicke, M.D. said in an interview with Endpoints News. To guide its strategy, K2 has brought on former Orna Therapeutics chief medical officer Frank Neumann as its CMO. Lilly recently bought MPM-backed Orna and its in vivo CAR-T work for up to $2.4 billion. K2 has also enlisted former Bristol Myers Squibb medical chief Samit Hirawat as an advisor, Gadicke said. Hirawat also recently became a medical advisor to European biotech investor Jeito Capital. If its name is any suggestion, the road ahead might be a hard — but immensely rewarding — trek. K2 is the second-tallest summit in the world, on the border between China and Pakistan. Other companies have held the K2 name before, including what became Cidara Therapeutics. The big pharma has lined up an acquisition option for a little-known Boston-area biotech called Kestrel. The move comes after AbbVie was reportedly interested in Revolution Medicines, but the Chicagoland pharma giant denied those M&A rumors in January. Kyle LaHucik shared thisAfter a dozen years working on SIK inhibition within the R&D walls of Galapagos, Coultreon Biopharma has collected $125 million for another shot at immune system rebalancing as an independent Belgian startup. The fledgling biotech is slated to soon enter Phase 2 with a SIK3 inhibitor for ulcerative colitis, psoriasis and more autoimmune indications down the road. The Galapagos spinout is backed by Sofinnova Investments, Forbion, Novo Holdings, Regeneron Ventures and other leading European and US biotech investors. Galapagos, meanwhile, is getting back into the autoimmune arena with its Gilead Sciences-aligned Ouro Medicines deal. Kyle LaHucik shared thisA small Connecticut biotech believes it can take on the massive hair growth market by tweaking the oral formulation of minoxidil, long known as Rogaine. Its first clinical results as a public company pad its case, and a second Phase 3 readout later this year could serve as the basis for an FDA approval request. Veradermics CEO Reid Waldman, a dermatologist with lush hair and a former Kansas City barbeque competition judge, said the six-month data for VDPHL01 beat internal expectations. Leading up to the data results for "Study 302," Veradermics deemed success as “a profile that essentially would look like an oral Romaine foam with good safety, but the convenience of oral administration," Waldman said in an interview with Endpoints News. "And that is a profile that we have just smashed with this data," the Veradermics CEO said. Kyle LaHucik shared thisLilly's fourth acquisition in 28 days is for a biotech that attracted M&A interest in 2021 but passed on the opportunity at the time because it thought its team was best suited for developing a better JAK2 inhibitor. Now, that type II JAK2 is getting bought for up to $2.3 billion ahead of proof-of-concept data anticipated later this year. Two years ago, Lilly took part in Ajax’s last disclosed financing, a $95 million Series C. A few months later, in October 2024, the New York and Cambridge, MA-based startup went into the clinic with AJ1-11095. The drug was designed with the help of collaborator Schrödinger. One of Ajax’s scientific co-founders, Ross Levine, who is also Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s chief scientific officer, previously told Endpoints News that other JAK inhibitors on the market don’t yet do enough for patients. “They don’t achieve molecular or pathologic regression. We don’t get patients where we want them to get,” he told Endpoints in 2024. Tempero Bio, an Aditum Bio portfolio company working on an mGluR5 modulator from Nxera, will shutter after a “serious adverse event” finding in its Phase 2 alcohol use disorder trial, Endpoints News has learned. “This is an area sort of like obesity. Kyle LaHucik liked thisKyle LaHucik liked thisToday is one of those big “WOW” days: the IPO of Seaport Therapeutics. CEO and human being extraordinaire Daphne Zohar led the charge. It was a privilege being among this incredible team - so much talent, passion, excellence, teamwork, commitment and a desire to improve the health of the world. A number of family members attended - spouses, partners, daughters and sons. Watching their faces gave me chills. The pride in their loved ones was so touching. Daphne’s 17-year old daughter said, “I can’t believe she’s my mom,” meaning I can’t believe I get to be her daughter. Beautiful. We get to do some pretty cool things in our career. Today was one of those experiences. Congratulations to Team Seaport! So much more to come.

Really floored to see her accomplishments celebrated in this way. This story had been percolating for a couple of years, no joke, and I gave myself a goal to get it done before I left for maternity leave. It would not have been possible without my very, very good editors Lydia Ramsey Pflanzer and Drew Armstrong. I just had my two year anniversary at Endpoints News and it has been awesome to see it getting the recognition it deserves lately. Just last week, the team won three Neal awards! - PresentI have camped more than 100 hours, completed a five-day canoe trip (camping at various spots along the Pere-Marquette River), hiked 40 miles in four days, attended the seven-day National Youth Leadership Training and much more. After achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in June 2014, I have continued my involvement in Troop 725 as one of the adult leaders, helping out whenever I am in my hometown/not in school.
