I’ve attended a few @Charlotte Logistics Connection events, including their golf tournaments and happy hours, but this was my first time joining their annual Charlotte Knights Night. Baseball and networking turned out to be a great combination. ⚾ The event was limited to 50 people. I spotted a few familiar faces like Danny Roberts, our host, and Peter Grieshop from CSCMP Charlotte RT, but most of the group was new to me. Some had traveled from across the Carolinas and as far away as Tennessee. It was a great reminder of why I try to attend a variety of events. It’s easy to stay within the circles we already know, but different settings can introduce us to people we might not otherwise meet and create opportunities to expand our network and build new relationships. Sometimes broadening our circles starts by changing where we show up. Of course, baseball, ballpark food, and a 4-1 Knights win over the Durham Bulls made the evening more fun. Organizations often place governance and risk management in the same conversation, but they solve fundamentally different problems. Governance establishes direction, accountability and oversight. Risk management helps decision-makers understand uncertainty and choose appropriate responses. • Governance asks whether purpose, strategy, accountability and performance are aligned. • Risk management asks what could affect objectives and how the organization should respond. • Governance sits at the highest oversight level and delegates authority. • Risk management operates across strategy, operations and decision-making. • Governance provides the framework; risk management strengthens decisions within it. The strongest organizations do not treat these disciplines as competing functions. They connect them. Good governance ensures the organization is directed and controlled appropriately. Effective risk management ensures uncertainty is understood before it becomes a surprise. When both work together, organizations gain stronger accountability, better decisions, greater resilience and more sustainable performance. Andrea is originally from Ecuador and has been surrounded by design for as long as she can remember. In 2024, a conversation with her husband about what they wanted their lives to look like made one thing clear: design wasn't just something she loved, it was something she wanted to build a life around. That's what led her to launch The Grant Studio, at first alongside a full-time career in global management consulting, but soon, as the pursuit she's most passionate about. Since founding The Grant Studio, life hasn't slowed down. Her husband launched his own remodeling company in early 2025, they welcomed a 16-month-old, and the two of them have been figuring it all out together ever since. On any given weekend, you can find Andrea catching up with friends and family over good food and better cocktails, traveling when she can, or recovering from a day of chasing a toddler - usually with Otis, their red lab and unofficial first son, right there with her. Over the last year, I’ve become convinced of something: Speed doesn’t come from working harder. It comes from being disciplined at intake. In growing organizations, ideas are rarely the problem. There are almost always more initiatives than capacity, and often more initiatives than leaders to responsibly drive them. The real risk isn’t lack of ambition. It’s diffusion of focus. When every request feels urgent, nothing truly is. So instead of launching more work, we’ve been building discipline around three things: 1. A structured intake model that drives clarity before effort 2. A transparent prioritization framework tied to enterprise objectives 3. Visible capacity planning that makes tradeoffs explicit Upfront discipline changes the conversation. From “Can we do this?” To “Should we do this now?” And “What happens if we don’t?” In complex organizations, focus isn’t just a productivity lever. It’s a performance lever. Leadership attention is finite. Capital is finite. Execution capacity is finite. Sequencing well is how strategy turns into measurable results. And the discipline to decide what not to pursue is often what sustains long-term performance.
