Everyone needs a little TLC on Supply Chain Finance day. And no… I’m not talking about tender loving care. 🛬 Today we’re talking Total Landed Cost. 💵 I’m traveling this week to visit one of our co-manufacturing partners. Whenever I’m in a plant or supplier facility, the conversations inevitably drift toward one thing... You are probably thinking Cost (or tortas) since this is money day. Well, kind of, but specifically Unit Price. There is a huge difference between Unit Price and Cost. Now before anyone’s eyes glaze over... Finance in supply chain isn’t meant to be intimidating. Most of it is just common sense with numbers attached and Total Landed Cost is a great example. A lot of people focus on unit price when sourcing a product, but experienced supply chain operators know that price is only the starting point. Total Landed Cost is what it actually costs to get that product into your operation and ready to sell or use. I apologize to my finance colleagues if I miss something. Depending on the business, that can include things like 💲 Freight and transportation 💲 Duties or tariffs 💲 Packaging and handling 💲 Warehousing 💲 Inventory carrying cost 💲 Lead time risk 💲 Quality issues 💲 Expedited shipments when something inevitably goes sideways Suddenly that “great price” you negotiated doesn’t look quite the same. Financially savvy supply chain professionals don’t ask “What’s the price"? They ask “What does it really cost to get this product where we need it, when we need it?” That’s Total Landed Cost. Once you start thinking that way, you’re no longer just buying product. You’re designing a supply chain. If finance topics ever seem intimidating, don’t worry. Last year, my daughter had an unexpected trip to the ER. Like most parents in that moment, my focus wasn’t on the bill - it was on making sure she was okay. Thankfully, she was. But a few weeks later, the hospital bill arrived… and it stopped me in my tracks. **The total was over $11,000.** Professionally, I’ve spent my career in procurement - negotiating contracts, analyzing cost structures, and challenging assumptions. So instead of accepting the bill at face value, I approached it the same way I would approach any complex spend category. And this time, I had a new tool: AI. Here’s what I did: 1️⃣ Requested an itemized bill Most medical bills arrive as a summary. The real story is always in the details. 2️⃣ Uploaded the bill to an AI tool (like ChatGPT) to analyze the codes AI is incredibly effective at quickly breaking down billing structures, CPT codes, and reimbursement rules. 3️⃣ Identified three major coding issues • **ER Category 5 visit** - the highest complexity billing level - which didn’t align with the clinical documentation and was later downgraded. • **Inpatient room charge** that didn’t meet the “two-midnight rule.” If a stay doesn’t cross two midnights, it typically qualifies as **observation**, not inpatient billing. • **CT scan coded at the most expensive level** when the radiology report reflected a standard head CT. After a few structured conversations with the hospital billing team - supported by the analysis - the bill was **reduced by roughly $4–5K**. No confrontation. Just transparency and data. The bigger lesson for me wasn’t just the savings. It reinforced something I believe deeply as a procurement leader: **Information asymmetry drives cost.** For years, I have used analytics and digital tools in procurement to rebalance negotiations with suppliers. AI is now putting similar capabilities in the hands of individuals. Medical billing, insurance claims, contracts, subscriptions - these are all complex cost structures that benefit from transparency and analysis. And that’s exactly where AI excels. This experience reminded me that **negotiation is no longer just a professional skill - it’s becoming a life skill.** So next time you have a large medical bill, I hope my story helps you leverage the new tools to save you both time and $$. What if your people could leave work safer and better than they did coming in? Our bonuses are tied to metrics: Quality. Delivery. Inventory. Productivity. You can clearly see how each one connects to your cashflow, top-line, and bottom-line... But Safety? Safety can feel abstract — until it isn’t. It can be just as costly… and good leadership in safety can make a massive difference. Let’s look at Boeing: 📉 2018 to Now Top-line revenue dropped 25% , EBITDA crashed $14 billion to negative Tied to the 737 MAX in-service challenges and poor leadership on safety 📈 2014 to 2018 Top-line revenue grew 10%, EBITDA steadily climbed from $9.4B to $14B During the 2014–2018 period, leadership responded differently after two tragic safety events: 🔹 2012 – Major injury during aircraft testing (non-fatal) 🔹 2013 – Fatal fall from a high platform 🔹 2014 – Boeing launched the “Go for Zero” injury campaign 👀 Inside the manufacturing operation, here’s what I saw: ✅ All safety projects took absolute priority ...and everyone generously labeled their project “safety” to get it through ✅ Flagging even the tiniest issue was celebrated ...so everyone started doing it to get recognized ✅ Every meeting started with a “safety moment” ...half of us rolled our eyes ✅ Daily team huddles began with stretches ...half participated awkwardly 🧠 Management made space for: • An overwhelming wave of safety issues • “Wasted” thousands of hours gently talking safety • Safety awareness training that actually stuck They stayed the course. They weathered the storm. And eventually… it worked. Around 2016, we felt the shift: 💪 Safety & ergonomics were never compromised to meet delivery or financial targets 🟢 Fixing even minor safety issues became frictionless (eg. safety racks) 👀 We had each other’s backs — watching for near misses, not just our own 🧘‍♂️ People got creative with daily stretches to make them fun and inclusive I knew the culture had changed when a colleague shared this: "Over the weekend, I actually avoided slipping on ice in the parking lot going to get a burger... because someone had just reminded us in the safety moment: 'It's cold out there — watch for black ice.'" Safety culture at work had reached home. This campaign didn’t just reduce injuries — it changed how people moved through the world. Drinking the Kool-Aid was actually good for you. Sure, safety has a financial impact. But more importantly — and instinctively — as a leader of people in operations: 💡 Your impact multiplies. But today, Boeing is visibly trying to swing the pendulum back — to reclaim its safety foundation and find its mojo again.

I bet everyone in the workforce has taken the course, read the book, or heard of the 7 habits of highly effective people for the legendary Stephen Covey: the Leadership GOAT! However, the question is, are we really putting these habits into play at our work? To me, Stephen Covey’s 7 habits and supply chain excellence are inseparable? If a person can harness his/ her self with those habits and put them into play, the sky is the limit for the results that can be achieved with this mindset! Example: Negotiation! One of the must have skills in Procurement and Supply Chain in general is Negotiation. My definition of negotiation is that 2 parties are sitting on the same table trying to get a deal for the entity they work for by the end of the meeting.  If you enter this room without a strategy, you are shooting yourself in the foot. I have crafted my negotiations strategy that I gained through my career into 4 pillars; - Empathy - Long term perspective - It’s not personal; its business - Winning is bipartisan I want to rant more! If I blend negotiation with the 7 habits, here how it would turn out: - Be Proactive — do your due diligence before the meeting and be clear on what winning looks like for you from this meeting. Don’t wait till the meeting occurs - Begin with the End in Mind — share your goals and targets upfront and let the negotiation conversation built upon them - Think Win-Win  & Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood — As a buyer, your are the boss (Most of the time) and you can hammer the supplier. However, don’t expect a superior service if you sealed a bad deal for the seller. Instead, put yourself on the seller shoes and picture what winning looks like for the seller and act accordingly. If you ask the seller what winning looks like to you? That’s even better Remember, it is always about the long game. Quick wins feel good! But, when a black swan drops, the good relationship will be your survival bout! So, do you think the 7 habits work in Supply Chain?

It's the beginning of the year and your supplier slaps you with a "our pricing is increasing by x%" Sound familiar? Instead of freaking out. Or just blindly accepting the increase, do these 3 things... 1. Ask what is driving the increase? 2. Look at your bill of materials- evaluate any component that has an increase and seek alternate suppliers. 3. OR look into alternate materials. #sourcing #manufacturing #productdevelopment
