How do you reconcile the need for ‘no bullshit plain speaking’ with fostering optimism in #challenging economic or social climates?” I answered: “The plain speaking optimist tells the truth about the challenge, the pain, the risk, and the stakes. The realistic optimist asks what can still be done, built, improved, or endured with courage and clarity. In hard economic or social times, optimism is not pretending things are fine. It is the belief that good things can happen and that, with effort, things can work out in the end. The optimistic leader refuses to hand victory to fear, cynicism, or helplessness.” Later, in the dentist’s chair, I realised I should have picked up the word “reconcile”. There is nothing to reconcile, Jaya. No bullshit plain speaking and optimism are partners in leadership, resilience, and happiness. One tells the truth without varnish. The other asks what is still possible and what we can do next.

Marketing experts have long measured and quantified the reputation of companies — a key asset that directly impacts trust, partnerships, and growth. But reputation isn’t just for brands. It seems the same applies to nations. Reputation Lab has ranked 60 of the world’s leading economies by their international standing in 2025. Switzerland, Canada, Sweden and Norway lead the way — proof that national trust, integrity, and collaboration can be just as measurable as corporate reputation. Reputation Lab’s data suggests that a one-point improvement in a country’s reputation score is worth roughly: 7.2% more income from tourism, and 1% more in foreign investments. If we apply that to the top five countries for 2025 — using realistic national figures — we can estimate the monetary value of a one-point reputation increase like this: Estimated Value of +1 Reputation Point; Switzerland $3.8 billion. Canada About $3.0 billion. Norway $2.3 billion. Sweden $2.6 billion. Finland $1.9 billion. So in simple terms: If Switzerland improved its reputation score by just one point, it could bring in around $4 billion more in combined tourism and foreign investment every year. That shows that reputation isn’t soft—it’s measurable and worth billions. Reputation, whether for a business or a country, is earned through consistent behavior, transparency, and value creation. When President Trump abruptly cancelled all trade talks with Canada, most saw political drama. Through a negotiation lens, it’s a fascinating study of two contrasting styles. The trigger was small but symbolic — an Ontario ad using Ronald Reagan’s voice to criticize tariffs. It struck an emotional nerve and ended months of dialogue overnight. Lesson 1: Triggers matter. Negotiations rarely collapse on facts; they collapse on perception and emotion. Managing how your counterpart feels about your actions can be just as critical as what’s actually on the table. Lesson 2: Stay calm and keep options open. Within hours, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized Canada’s readiness to resume talks — while also exploring new trade relationships in Asia. That’s smart positioning: keep the door open, reduce dependency, and protect flexibility. Lesson 3: Two different playbooks. Trump’s “walk-away” tactic is classic short-term leverage — it can work when time pressure dominates. Canada’s approach aligns more with long-term, trust-based negotiation: staying composed, preserving relationships, and focusing on future collaboration. Both tactics have their place. But in my research and thousands of simulations, the collaborative route consistently produces more sustainable outcomes. I just listened to a report on a older news item that described how disconnected workers were "rehabilitated" by new management that simply listened to their people and enacted the changes they had been suggesting for years, but the old regime ignored. The old regime actually hoped that the new way would fail so they would be proven right. Wrong! Productivity, quality, retention, etc. increased simply because the people were heard and respected by the new leadership.

Mark Heminway liked thisMark Heminway liked thisThis Thursday in Vilnius, I had the honor of delivering the closing keynote at a very successful negotiation conference with close to 1,000 participants — following former Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who served from 2009 to 2019 and negotiated face to face with, among others, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and all the EU country leaders. She remains a rare figure in politics because she is highly respected by Lithuanians. That was a real privilege. I opened my keynote with a confession: I’m embarrassed. I have built a successful career helping corporations and governments improve collaboration, openness, and trust in negotiations. In many ways, there should be no need for my services, since much of what I teach should be obvious. And yet, there's a huge demand for my service. My keynote topic was AI in negotiation. But my message about AI might have surprised quite a few people. AI is far from the biggest danger in negotiation. The biggest danger is that millions of people are now using AI to become more efficient at negotiating the wrong way. AI makes bad negotiators faster and smart negotiators better. If your direction is wrong, AI becomes the GPS that gets you there faster. That is why we need to reset the way we think about negotiation before we even start talking about AI. I believe too many people are still going in circles, discussing the same old tools, tactics, and techniques as if the answer is to get better at performance in the room. Drop all the tactics, manipulating behavior, tricks, simulated empathy, and body language interpretation as if it were some magical ball. Just be yourself. Negotiation is not a theater. Negotiation is deal architecture. It is not about tricks, reading body language, tactical games, or polishing techniques that sound impressive but do little to create real financial success. Negotiation is a process to create and distribute value. And that only happens through transparent, honest, and open engagement. That is the thinking behind SMARTnership Negotiation. So my point in Vilnius was simple: We do not need to make the horse and buggy run faster. We need to invent the car. Because the future of negotiation will not belong to those who simply use AI more. It will belong to those who finally understand what negotiation is — and what it is not and then use AI to improve negotiation the right way. It’s not “Human OR AI” but “Human AND AI”. That's what Stefano Puntoni told me when I asked what makes him optimistic. Stefano Puntoni is the Sebastian S. Kresge Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. I have already enjoyed his thinking in the Harvard Business Review article "Generative AI - Managers and Executives Disagree on AI - and It’s Costing Companies" with his friends Jeremy Korst and Prasanna Tambe. The opportunity before us is to use AI well for ourselves, for our organisations, and for our nation. Used wisely, it can help individuals grow, organisations innovate, and countries build new prosperity with confidence. The question is not Human or AI. The question is what human beings will do with AI now.

Just one safe year at a time. Most careers stall here. The best ones don’t 👇 1. A career is a portfolio, not a prison Every role is an asset. No single job is your identity. 2. Loyalty without growth is self-neglect Staying to avoid guilt erodes confidence. 3. Skills expire in silence If you don’t stretch, you stale. 4. No spiral. No permission needed. Just the unshakeable knowing that the fall did not take anything from her. That is not a skating skill. It is an identity. I spent years learning that lesson the hard way. Staying in rooms that were shrinking me because I did not yet trust what I would find on the other side. Hesitating before decisions I already knew the answer to. Waiting for someone else to confirm what I was already capable of. The fall was never the problem. But the doubt that followed it was. The moment I stopped treating every setback as evidence against myself, everything changed. Save this for the moment a fall is making you question everything. 3 things falling taught me about trust: 1/ Competence does not disappear when you stumble. ↳ Everything you have built is still there when you get back up. ↳ The fall is temporary. What you know is not. 2/ Self trust is not built in the good seasons. ↳ It is built in the moment you get up without waiting for applause. ↳ That is where your identity is forged. 3/ The fastest recovery is the one with no story attached. ↳ She did not catastrophise the fall. ↳ She just got up. Do that. Nothing is lost when you fall and get up immediately. The only thing that was ever at risk was the belief that you could. And that was never actually in danger. They shape mood, influence trust, and help determine whether a conversation closes down or opens up. In that sense, optimistic language is not a soft extra. It is practical leadership. It helps people feel heard, keeps possibility alive, and supports more constructive action. A small shift in language can become a meaningful shift in culture. 😊Mark Heminway liked thisUse The Language of Optimism Language shapes mood, trust, and possibility. Speak in ways that open people up. Choose words that strengthen courage, connection, and constructive effort. This is one of the simplest ways to live more optimistically. You can develop a more optimistic attitude and manner by practising positive speech and action every day. One of my favourite tips is to stop using the word “but” and try to use the word “and.” Norman Vincent Peale offered a practical discipline. When a negative attitude is expressed, respond with a more positive, optimistic view. Start with quiet respect. When someone expresses a different or doubtful view, acknowledge it rather than dismiss it. People are more open to optimism when they feel heard. Then add your positive and constructive perspective. That is how optimism keeps the conversation open and moving forward. In The Optimistic Manifesto, James Rankin argues that optimists enrich language with the positive, the powerful, and the possible. They communicate challenges and opportunities, not problems and limitations. They see the doughnut, not just the hole. There is also the body language of optimism. If you are up to it, look people in the eye. Smile with your eyes. Avoid looking at your phone or other devices in conversation. Avoid looking at devices when walking down the street.
