Matilde Falomir Rodríguez often times if we can get involved up front, we can convince prosecutors to go another route and not file charges against our clients. When people wait, they lose this opportunity. Once prosecutors have filed charges, it’s much more difficult process to get them to drop them and often times they won’t.

The opportunity cost wasn't philosophical. It was financial. And it was invisible — which is exactly why it's dangerous. There's no invoice that says "You just lost $25,000 because you drafted that contract instead of building your practice." But it's happening. Every day. Once Xavier got out of production, his growth trajectory changed completely. Today his firm is expanding into multiple states. Leah Mayersohn liked thisLeah Mayersohn liked thisKyley and I have done it for eight years now. It’s the Back to School Bash in Delray Beach. In Jacob’s Shoes is one of the charities there, and that’s who we’re with. Hundreds of kids come through, and every one of them walks out with a new pair of shoes that actually fits. Not a box of whatever was left over. Their pair. They pick it. You learn things doing this. A lot of these kids have never chosen their own shoes. They’ve worn what fit, what got handed down, what somebody else decided. So when you kneel down and ask what color they want, some of them freeze. They’re not used to being asked. Then they figure out you mean it. Kyley is a prosecutor. I’m a defense attorney. We spend our careers on opposite sides of the same courtroom. For a few hours every August we’re both sitting on a gym floor lacing up sneakers for a kid who’s nervous about the first day of school. That’s the part I think about. We tie this to the firm too. At Rossen Law Firm every referral we get, we donate a pair of shoes through In Jacob’s Shoes. We’re over 1,600 pairs now. That number isn’t a marketing line to me. It’s the impact a business can have on the community. Eight years in and it’s still the best afternoon on my calendar.

Pro Tip: While the law is the same throughout the State of Florida, the practice and protocols are different from County to County. So is the language. A “no action” - or the State Attorney declining to file formal charges - in Miami is called a “no info” in Broward. And in Palm Beach, a “no file.” If I’m speaking to the Broward State Attorney’s Office and I refer to a case as being “no action’d,” they’ll look at me like I’m speaking a foreign language (which I’m kind of doing here). Pretrial Diversion in Miami is the Misdemeanor Diversion Program in Broward. Palm Beach does something called a “Plea and Pass.” Miami and Broward have no idea what that is. The point is, if you practice in multiple counties - it’s important to learn the nuances for each County to be more effective, and at the very least, to appear like you know what you’re doing.
