Mitesh Sharma shared thisMitesh Sharma shared thisI spent the last ten years building a fulfilling career at Meta I spent the last ten months constantly commiserating about layoffs. And within the last ten days, I lost my uncle and my job. I'm OK, I promise. If there’s been one silver lining, it’s the gift of perspective. While layoffs are deeply unsettling, all my time and all my attention last week was focused on grieving my uncle and supporting my family in Texas. And now that I’m back home in San Francisco, I’m realizing that I’m not missing the Meta day-to-day as much as my interactions with close colleagues. My story is not unique but it bears repeating: your job is just a job and its not your identity and you will get another one and things will be OK in the long-term. Your family and friends are what you’ll remember, and who will remember you, in the end. Towards the back half of this year, I’d like to pursue some professional interests I’ve been putting off; namely, AI/ML and product management. I’d love to listen and learn to anyone willing to help me on this journey. Eventually. For now, I plan to invest in personal wellbeing, friends, and family. If you’re reading this, I’d love to catch up. Maybe we could go on a walk together. Maybe you can give me some travel recommendations. Or if you’re also an ex-Meta employee maybe we can just catch up about the good ol’ days. On to the next ten years.

Looking back this has been the most challenging and eye opening experience i had in my career. I have met some of the brightest yet genuine, kind and humble people in this company that help me to grow professionally and personally in a way that i could have never ever imagined. Every story has an end, but in life every ending is just a new beginning. I will take time to reset but am now #opentowork. I am interested in product marketing, strategy, sales and marketing. I’m grateful for the chance to work alongside some of the best people in the industry — many of whom I’m proud to call friends — as well as the opportunity to do some of the things that I’m best at. So TL;DR: here’s what I do best, how you can help me and what’s next. What I can bring: - Building: I have 25+ years experience in tech, media & entertainment — from working 1:1 with partners and creators, to starting up and running 100+ person teams as an exec and to designing and optimizing new content platforms and systems with product and engineering teams. - Experience: My experience spans Partnerships and Product, and I like to think I help bring creators to new platforms, and respect their vision to do it justice. From launching the first TV show to stream online with Jon Stewart to building apps and digital shows with Anthony Bourdain and to collabing with Game of Thrones/HBO on an Emmy-nominated VR experience — I’ve seen and learned a lot. - Bridging Product & Content: For the last 10 years I’ve been building content solutions for product needs. Whether it’s launching a new zero-to-one video platform like Facebook Watch or designing and optimizing a content system at scale for Instagram Reels, I understand what’s important to both a Product Manager, Engineer, Marketer as well as a Creator, Partner and User. Mitesh Sharma shared thisMitesh Sharma shared thisThe past 3.5 years at Meta have been a whirlwind. I joined then Facebook in January 2020—just before the pandemic. I spent the next year and a half working from home, then the next six months on maternity leave, and returned to a new company with a new mission (Hey, Meta!). I got promoted and then, along with so many of my A+ colleagues, got laid off. Whew... Each day was different, but the constants remained: challenging work, multitudes of opportunities, and the best colleagues in the business (seriously). I worked on many meaningful projects with my partners who spanned the government, political, and progressive advocacy space in the U.S. and Canada. A highlight of my time was working with the U.S. Department of Public Health and the CDC to help launch Covid-19 Profile Frames on Facebook, support vaccine awareness campaigns, and fight Covid-19 misinformation across Instagram and Facebook. I still smile whenever I see an "I got my Covid-19 Vaccine" frame on someone's Facebook Profile. I also loved seeing my partners’ work on the ground and speaking with amazing leaders in amazing spaces. You never want to leave a job on someone else's terms, but I am optimistic about what's to come. I can't wait to spend more time with my tenacious toddler and welcome the newest little Adrien to our crew in a few short weeks. I'll also take time to figure out where I want to land next and start making moves. For now, I'll lean on my fantastic network of family, friends, and colleagues for help. Here's how you can: 1. Over the past 4.5 years, I've encountered some of the most challenging and fulfilling experiences of my career and life. Closing this chapter, I feel incredibly confident and eagerly anticipate the exciting adventures that lie ahead. What I learned: * The impact on people is long-lasting * Talent knows no hierarchy; everyone possesses high potential. * Diversity takes on various forms, and fostering curiosity and consciousness enables us to see beyond the surface. * Dealing with ambiguity is not about having all the answers but rather about having the ability and willingness to seek and discover them. * Endurance and resilience are not the same. Overusing a specific muscle group can make it more prone to injury and comes with an opportunity cost. * Vulnerability entails acknowledging imperfections and inviting others to join you in leadership. * Visions come to fruition through unconstrained thinking. Once the target state is defined, obstacles can be addressed and resolved * Influencing others and transforming cultures share a common element: understanding people's motivations and incentives. * A great Data Scientist dives deep into the "why" behind the data, continuously asking questions and validating assumptions. While the ban on some of these apps might’ve come for other reasons, it might be doing customers good, in case these apps are misusing the customer data as claimed by many.

Mitesh Sharma reacted on thisMitesh Sharma reacted on thisAfter 12.5 wonderful years, I decided to leave Meta, and today was my last day. It has been an exceptional journey in 2 continents, 3 cities, 4 offices. I took on several different roles in sales, product marketing and strategy, and was lucky enough to work with some of the smartest people I have ever met. Facebook/Meta taught me a lot, and made me a better person. I am forever grateful for the opportunity. I am leaving with a lot of amazing memories, but will continue to stay in touch with all my fellow friends/colleagues/partners at Meta. Next, I will take some time to rest and travel. However, I know I can not do nothing for long. Soon, I will go back to blogging, which I missed a lot, and will share insights from my experience in marketing and product strategy. And, eventually I plan to start my own business. Stay tuned! I am excited and looking forward to learning new things, working with new people and embarking on a new adventure.

The past year off has been both exhausting and amazing. I’ve loved every second of being with my little ones as they grow. Coming back, I’m really looking forward to focusing on new business growth and how BrightCarbon can #partner with other agencies to provide high quality templates, beautifully designed presentations and eLearning, and custom #PowerPoint tools for clients. Huge shout out to Natty Moore, who is permanently taking over my previous role. She has very predictably done a smashing job whilst I’ve been away. I can’t wait to see how she leads the team in the future! Shout out to Andrew Clarke, Cecilia Croasdell and everyone on my old team, managing you all and working with you day-in, day-out has been an absolute highlight of my career. Thanks Joby Blume, for the opportunity to do something different, looking forward to seeing BrightCarbon continue to grow!
