Paul Ust shared thisThe Economist has been covering the global mobility theme more frequently of late, as in this past week's issue - "The world's wealthy are migrating like never before" and how advisors are positioning themselves in this space. Most of my work in connecting the New Zealand #ActiveInvestorPlus #AIP option to individuals/families involves listening closely to their motivations and in many cases, the situations unique to their countries that might drive them to explore optionality or diversification through an investor migration program. These conversations go beyond understanding just why New Zealand is a proper fit for them to consider. I leverage these 'case studies' to strategically identify other countries/regions around the world that might have individuals with similar motivations - and the means - to consider a global residency program and see how we can proactively get New Zealand's option on the table as an attractive option. Understanding the country dynamics, keeping on top of global events of a region or continent are just as important as aligning the investments to individuals pursuing these pathways. In my own frequent conversations/catchups with advisors in the space, I not only ask -"What part(s) of North America, or where else in the world are you getting interest in New Zealand - or what other global options are popular in which countries?" but I also - "What markets/countries do you think we SHOULD be getting interest in, if the New Zealand pathway was presented to them?" https://lnkd.in/gaYavRSJThe world’s wealthy are migrating like never beforeThe world’s wealthy are migrating like never before

Paul Ust shared thisWorld Cup Travel quick survey/quiz below... Most of my professional work has involved getting individuals/organizations comfortable with doing business across borders, exploring new markets, understanding other countries, and exploring collaborations in places they may have never been to. Perhaps it's fitting that the World Cup has always been my favorite sporting event, given the historic, geostrategic and sporting rivalries between countries, and knowing that countries shut down to watch their teams play (not in the U.S. though) Here’s a game I thought I might try with my globally curious LinkedIn network, World Cup-themed... 4 questions around your experience with the 48 countries competing from tomorrow. Q1 - How many of the 48 countries have you travelled to? - and yes, you include your home country(ies) as a starter Q2 - Of the 48 countries, which was the most recent ‘new’ first-time country visit for you (i.e. which one did you visit for the first time most recently) Q3 - How many of the 48 have you lived in? (a minimum of 6-to-9 months counts as ‘lived’ I would say, not 'spent a whole summer there') Q4 - Which of the 48 competing countries that you haven’t visited yet, are on top of your “I have to go there someday!” list? My Results: Q1 - 29 countries (I was going strong with 14 out of 16 in groups A through D… and then faltered…with only 15 out of the remaining 32 in groups E through L!) Q2 - Most recent 'first time visit' is Qatar Q3 - I have lived in (5) England, U.S., Belgium, Germany, Australia Q4 - Iran, Uzbekistan, Congo are the 3 that I’m most intrigued to visit that I haven't got to yet (from those 3 you can sense I am most certainly NOT a ‘hey, let’s go to Florida’ type of destination traveler) https://lnkd.in/e7kDv3a7

Paul Ust shared this25 hours in Boston! – This week I was invited to ‘tag along’ with 6 firms active in the advisory and investment ecosystem of New Zealand’s investor visa residency program – Active Investor Plus. It was fitting that I came to Boston to talk through investing and global mobility options like New Zealand’s. My initial immersion into the region came through an overseas assignment, where I was transferred from Boston (my home for 10 years) to Sydney (which became home for 3 years) and where I was able to actively engage in research and collaborations with senior executives on key strategies driving businesses and government organizations in Australia and New Zealand. That Boston-to-Sydney transfer set an early framework for what I do now, in strategizing with families considering global optionality, diversification, ‘Plan B’ options around the world – to invest in but also acquire a valuable global asset such as permanent residency in a wonderful place like New Zealand. Boston – which I claim as my old ‘hometown’, as it was the place I had lived in the longest by the time I left – has been a place that has garnered a lot of interest and uptake in the New Zealand pathway over recent years. As I tried to convey in my talking points to the group convened on Tuesday evening... · While Boston is 9000 miles away from New Zealand - the furthest of any major U.S. city from New Zealand- it is actually one of the stronger consistent markets for interest in the NZ investor visa pathway · Some of the recent investor migrants from the Boston area are amongst the more engaged and active of the U.S. crew who have taken the New Zealand investor visa pathway. I am in regular touch with them, and so if you’re looking for a ‘local Boston angle on ‘why’ they chose New Zealand – or regardless of where in the U.S. or world you live – they are extremely willing to have me connect them with you. I sense the traveling crew of Kiwi firms left impressed with the potential of Boston and New England as a source for investment into New Zealand. I thank them for inviting me along, especially the 'ring-leader' James Usmar and for having faith in 'giving Boston a go'. I plan to return to Boston with one of our own #InvestNewZealand networking and content gatherings focusing on the #AIP program, so hopefully I will see more familiar and new faces in the Fall and continue to build new links from Boston to the region. Stepping back into the past, many belated thanks to Cath Jules for recruiting me in Boston for that work transfer - I was easily convinced - that got me started on my immersion and love for the region, first Australia and soon after, New Zealand. I haven’t forgotten, Cath! #InvestNZ #InvestorVisa

Paul Ust shared thisThe Guardian had its own take on the 'surge of interest' in New Zealand as a global mobility option earlier this week. I thought I might provide some insights on 2 of the individuals in the article, both of whom have been integral to New Zealand's initiatives on its investor visa program in the U.S. Courtney Andelman is featured as the 100th applicant of the original iteration of the AIP (Active Investor Plus) visa. My first conversations with Courtney were back in November 2024 (they were never less than 60 minutes!) as she planned a family 'recon' trip to over the December break to see if NZ was indeed the country for them. The trip seemed to start well, as I soon received a message from Courtney, sharing one of their younger family member's comments on early immersions - “This is where I want to raise MY kids!". I think it is fair to say that all 4 became ‘sold’ on New Zealand, as they applied for the AIP visa within a month. Courtney’s approach to exploring the program, the country, and the steps that investor migrants need to consider, was meticulous (hence the long phone calls!). While she asked me for introductions, she had already done a lot of homework of her own, in her typical DIY approach. One line in this article that best sums up how they see the NZ proposition... “This is not just about fun and games and having a chance to live in one of the most amazing countries on the planet – this is also a really smart investment scheme. It’s smart for us.”. I've subsequently interviewed Courtney on our popular 'Fireside Chat' panel format in the U.S. and I know she is happy to be introduced to any looking for a one-to-one chat on steps to take if you're considering New Zealand or other global options. "Put me to work Paul... what can I do for you guys!" as she frequently tells me. Robbie Paul of Icehouse Ventures was my first meeting on arrival into Auckland last year. We strategized how to get the 'New Zealand' option on the table across the U.S. Robbie has subsequently been involved in our efforts to take the ‘Why New Zealand?’ case to places like Austin, Raleigh-Durham, NYC, and San Francisco. When Robbie is in front of our audiences in the U.S.… he does not talk about his fund or Icehouse Ventures but instead...on why he – now a dual U.S./New Zealand citizen - truly believes in New Zealand’s opportunity and promise, its exciting and innovative environment, the breadth of talented individuals, the great companies to invest in and the many ways you can stay active and immerse yourself into the NZ ecosystem in an impactful way! https://lnkd.in/eRNBZvqSWealthy Americans top ‘golden visa’ surge in New Zealand and applications from China doubleWealthy Americans top ‘golden visa’ surge in New Zealand and applications from China double

Paul Ust shared thisLate last week, I walked up Massachusetts Avenue/Embassy Row - my old running route in a city that was my home for 5 years - for an early morning meeting with New Zealand’s new Ambassador to the U.S. – Chris Seed. It was a great 60 minutes, sharing with Ambassador Seed the strategies and engagements we’ve been utilizing to grow awareness of the ‘New Zealand option' amongst the various global mobility and investor residency programs on offer for U.S. individuals/families considering a global diversification strategy. Ambassador Seed is the third New Zealand ambassador in Washington that I have had the privilege to work with since 2023, and I was extremely pleased to see his enthusiasm to continue the support that both of his predecessors – Ambassador Rosemary Banks and Ambassador Bede Corry – had provided for our efforts here. I left on my trek back down Mass Ave afterwards, excited about the opportunities to drive continued interest across a growing number of metro areas and regions in the U.S.. After all. the New Zealand #AIP #ActiveInvestorPlus option is not just a 'coastal' California/NYC thing these days… families from 27 U.S. states, plus DC, and 3 separate Canadian provinces are represented in the 200+ in North America who have applied for New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus residency visa just since April 2025, which justifies our ongoing efforts in every region of the continent #InvestNZ #NewZealand #investorvisa

Paul Ust shared thisA few days into 2026, a year where I hope to showcase more content early on that better explains the nuance behind the work I do on the #InternationalRelations #Investordiplomacy #foreigndirectinvestment and #globalmobility front for New Zealand at #InvestNewZealand It’s quite timely in that a useful podcast was released this past weekend which covers several of the themes behind my work and explains why New Zealand has been on the radar for those with the means to explore global mobility and diversification. Give it a listen - at least for the first 25 minutes which provides broader context, and then for more, a look into tax and real estate angles. In my conversations... some people ‘get this’ and some I’m still explaining the ‘why' that drive individuals to consider New Zealand as an option. Some think (incorrectly) that American families are pursuing New Zealand as a ‘tax option’…. This is not really about a ‘tax’ move…it really truly is about New Zealand. Over the past few years, I have collaborated and met regularly with first two guests on this session -Mark Williams, Graham Lawrence - who have been actively involved in our engagements with the North American market (and some of my efforts in the UK as well) - and since real estate has been added to the table for investor migrants considering New Zealand, I've started conversations recently with 3rd guest Brendan Goodwin BA. LLB. as well As host Erik Townsend says at the forefront… “I’ve evaluated quite a few of the #goldenvisa programs around the world I think this program is superior in many ways to almost all the others I’ve looked at…” which he eventually likens to “a lifetime call option to move to New Zealand”... ... which it really is, since you don’t necessarily have to ‘move’ immediately, but you can hold New Zealand as that 'permanent option' to utilize when you feel. As Erik also says... “I was surprised…to learn that really the main reason that people are flocking to this visa – there’s quite a few of them - it’s primarily about the interest in New Zealand…it’s a beautiful place… potentially, If the world took a turn for the wrong direction it would be a great place to move to with your family,…they don’t’ seem to be pursing this visa or the sake of the 4-year tax holiday….” (but he'll explain why you should also consider that benefit too!) and as Brendan Goodwin BA. LLB. mentions in the final segment… "Very few people will tell me - 'Hey I’m moving to NZ solely for tax' - normally it starts with lifestyle, safety, education for children. Political stability, quality of life" Thanks as well to Anna Sayer and Vanessa Otang for both alerting me to the podcast as soon as it came out this weekend! #NewZealand #InvestorVisa https://lnkd.in/e5TEjap8

Paul Ust shared thisOver 2025 I've talked a lot about 'pathways' to New Zealand. Today I'm heading to Salt Lake City, for the first of two evening networking sessions this week – Park City-Wednesday + Denver-Thursday - around the global mobility theme and the New Zealand pathway - #ActiveInvestorPlus. These will be the 9th & 10th of these New Zealand investor visa immersion events in the U.S. that I have been privileged to be a part of this year. Over 2025, our team Invest New Zealand has taken this formatted evening session to build awareness of the NZ story to NYC + San Francisco (2x each) LA, Seattle, Austin, Raleigh-Durham NC - and we're finishing up with 2 more first-time states for us - Utah and Colorado. We’ll be in Park City UT Wednesday evening 11/19 (6-8pm) with the same format in Denver CO the following evening-Thursday 11/20. If you can join us and if you’re curious about New Zealand and global mobility options for yourself and/or family, please do DM me - or drop a comment below - and I’ll pass on details on how to come along – and soak up some Kiwi hospitality and some NZ wines! #YPO, #Tiger21, and #IPI members particularly welcome! Want some numbers? ... Since April 1st, around 170 individuals/families in the U.S. and Canada have chosen global diversification and decided to move forward with New Zealand’s investor residency pathway. That's over 25 applicants a month! Each family is committing at least US$2.8 million worth of foreign direct investment - along with their intellectual capital and networks! - into New Zealand, and in return will acquire permanent residency for themselves and any family members under 25, all with spending as little as 3 weeks in New Zealand over those 3 years (but surely, they'll spend far longer!). It's a great Plan B to check out and explore! #InvestNZ #NewZealand #globalmobility #investorvisa #goldenvisa

Paul Ust shared this3 days in 3 cities (NY, LA, SF) - A whirlwind week started off in NYC on Tuesday on the topic of New Zealand’s investor visa residency option – Active Investor Plus (AIP). For a variety of reasons, far more Americans these days are exploring ‘Plan B’ global mobility options for residency. This past Tuesday in NY was the 11th running of this format in the U.S. since the start of 2024, and was the largest in attendance thus far (but to be exceeded 2 days later in San Francisco!) Earlier this year in Auckland, I heard NZ Minister for Immigration and Education - Hon Erica Stanford - talk about the imminent changes to be made to the investor visa pathway. Immediately after her speech I spoke with her about the surge of interest in New Zealand from the U.S. market, and our ongoing strategy in the U.S. market. Right there and then, she instructed me to be in touch with her staff to plan her involvement this year. So, we were extremely fortunate to get Minister Stanford to join us in 3 cities this week - starting off here in NYC - to talk through why she made the changes, and the contributing effect that she looks for Americans bringing to New Zealand, with ‘active human capital’ being just as important as ‘financial capital’. Since the revised AIP program took effect on April 1st, 300+ have applied globally for the program, with the U.S. taking up by far most of the applicants with 45% of this total. NZ Ambassador to the U.S. Rosemary Banks has been a strong supporter and partner in helping build awareness of the AIP program. This was the 4th time she has joined me for these gatherings with U.S. audiences. In addition to my own overview of our strategy for New Zealand in the U.S. market, I also curated a ‘Fireside Chat’ with 3 individuals who are already on their New Zealand investor visa pathways as they shared their stories and ‘why’ they chose the New Zealand route and ‘what advice’ they would give others who are considering a similar route. An extra element of expertise was added with the presence of 28 New Zealand-based advisors across the ecosystem of professional services associated with the AIP program. This included experts in the Investor visa application process, wealth management, asset management, banking solutions, and relocation and lifestyle experts. As the AIP comes with investment requirements, we had New Zealand-based investment fund management executives across Venture Capital, Climate Tech, Private Credit, Private Equity, and Private Debt. Richard Howard of Pathways to New Zealand® provided an overview of the AIP program. More from LA and SF next... Reach out to me for any introductions to the leading experts in the New Zealand investor visa pathway ecosystem or let’s set up a chat or a coffee if you’re one of those global-minded types looking to do business in, or invest in New Zealand, or considering your own ‘Plan B’ options and have New Zealand on your radar. #NewZealand #AIP #ActiveInvestorPlus #InvestNewZealand

Paul Ust shared thisAfter building up awareness of the New Zealand investor migrant visa opportunity in the U.S. market within the global mobility ecosystem of high-net-worth families and advisory firms in the space, it was a privilege to be asked to take this concept to my 'other' country of citizenship, landing in London earlier this week for an evening networking gala on Tuesday at the New Zealand High Commission (Embassy). It was great evening, New Zealand's Acting High Commissioner to the UK - Guergana Guermanoff - provided an overview of New Zealand-UK relations and the importance of foreign direct investment into NZ and the investor visa pathway. After my session overview of global mobility and its growing relevance to the UK and EU markets and how the New Zealand pathway fits into this interest, we featured 2 panels - the first of which included 3 firms with extensive work in the investor visa space, and then a fascinating and entertaining 'Fireside' chat with 2 UK individuals several years into their NZ investor visa adventures, telling the audience 'why' they did this, and tips for others considering New Zealand as one of their 'Plan B' options. Thanks to my London-based investment colleague Martin Aitchison for encouraging this, to drive some momentum for building an ecosystem to further put New Zealand's Active Investor Plus visa programme on the radar for global mobile families in the UK and Europe, and thanks to all my colleagues at the High Commission in London for the kind welcome and hospitality #NewZealand #InvestNewZealand #NZTE #ActiveInvestorPlus

From the color and character of Caminito to the history of San Telmo and the energy of Palermo, the city offers internationally mobile families culture, connection and a distinctive quality of life. Attention is also turning to Argentina’s anticipated Citizenship by Investment program. Applications are not yet open and the final requirements remain subject to official confirmation, but the initial phase is currently expected to be limited to approximately 5,000 applications. For interested families, this is the time to prepare - to begin assessing eligibility, mapping the documents that may be required, and reviewing potential due diligence and source-of-funds considerations. Great to see Sofyan Almoayed, Michael Bloch, Perry Britton, and so many dear (old) friends! Monday was the HORST Engineering Quarterly Pulsing Meeting in Hartford with our SLT. That was followed by dinner with the team and their spouse partners. We have a fantastic team! Tuesday was a visit to a potential new supplier outside Detroit. Wednesday was an excellent NTMA event hosted by PTSolutions in Novi. I'm still wrapping my head around their 3,000 UPS shipments of cutting tools/industrial supplies per day. It was great to reconnect with Roger Atkins and spend time with fellow YPO chapter and forum mate Eric Hagopian. I also met many new acquaintances. Then it was back to "work" on Thursday and Friday. Paul Ust liked thisPaul Ust liked thisFor years, I've argued that cross-border wealth structuring is about far more than tax planning. It is about risk diversification, access to markets, legal certainty, talent, capital, and optionality in an increasingly fragmented world. In a contemporary world increasingly shaped by geopolitics and competing economic spheres, I think that neutral, well-regulated financial centres are more important than ever. From my vantage point in Asia-Pacific, this trend is already visible. Singapore is the region's premier wealth hub. Hong Kong is a major repository for China-originated capital. Mauritius connects investment flows into Africa. And now I see that Indonesia is joining Vietnam and setting up an international financial centre. There is a lot of competition between established IFCs but ambitious countries have to start somewhere and I really admire the political imagination. https://lnkd.in/e-cM3BKpIndonesia parliament passes bill to set up international financial centresIndonesia parliament passes bill to set up international financial centres

Maybe you didn't know the world as you know it depends largely on open-source software. This is important for a free and open society that supports innovation and collaboration. And, not to tie everything to AI, but AI software developing agents and assistants exist because they trained on open-source codebases. I'm glad there are humans focusing on this aspect of keeping the world turning.

This week, Alt Goes Mainstream dove into the driving forces that are defining the current state of private markets and private wealth. ➡️ Business model innovation: In boardrooms throughout the industry, asset managers are evaluating how to evolve their businesses across the build, buy, or partner framework. Public is going private. BlackRock acquired Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), HPS Investment Partners, LLC, and Preqin to continue the buildout of its private markets franchise. Franklin Templeton acquired Lexington Partners. Goldman Sachs acquired Industry Ventures. Private is going public. Apollo Global Management, Inc. launched a New Markets Division. Partners Group partnered with BlackRock on model portfolios. Blackstone has partnered with Vanguard and Wellington Management to launch hybrid public / private products. KKR and Capital Group have partnered on hybrid products as well. ➡️ Portfolio construction innovation: The convergence of public and private might also mean that the notions of risk might be evolving. Shifting notions of risk might impact how investors construct a portfolio of the future. At the 2024 Norges Bank Investment Management Investment Conference, Apollo Global Management, Inc. CEO Rowan said that the industry is “going through an entire evaluation of public and private.” ➡️ Product innovation and market structure innovation: Hybrid products and model portfolios are part of the innovation driven by the convergence of public and private. Product innovation cannot be decoupled from the market structure evolution that’s taking place in private markets. MSCI Inc. has launched an index that includes both public and private equity. iCapital, BlackRock and GeoWealth have partnered on a unified managed account solution to enable the wealth channel to combine both public and private investments into a single portfolio. The convergence is just starting ... and will continue to evolve as asset managers and wealth managers think about how this innovation will continue to impact their business. https://lnkd.in/eY7pgSHz

It was fantastic to sit down with Charlie Linacre from Finatal for their Future of Funds series to talk about my (slightly unusual) journey from anthropology to private equity. From spotting market gaps and setting up Copilot Capital, to growing our team and landing those all-important early deals – it was a great discussion. We covered some of my favourite themes: • 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴: we’re often the biggest bet they’ll make. This is their life’s work, so they need real conviction in us - they have to look you in the eye and say, “Yes, I trust that person.” • 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴: At Copilot, we want our team to become full-stack investors - not just sourcing deals but also helping to build founder teams and our own business. Working in a smaller fund offers early associates more responsibility, autonomy and ownership - entrepreneurial risk with real upside. • 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟼 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳: We see acceleration ahead - especially as high-performing, VC-backed businesses that may not be unicorns look for the right home. Thanks, Charlie, for a great conversation. You can watch the full interview here

Canada is entering a new phase in how it thinks about defence capability. The emerging Defence Industrial Strategy signals more than increased spending, it reflects a shift toward rebuilding sovereign capability and ensuring that critical technologies and operational capacity exist inside Canada. For industries like aerospace and autonomy, this represents a meaningful change in priorities. I had the opportunity to discuss some of these dynamics with Lyndsay Malchuk on Market Frontlines. Grateful for the conversation.
