Paul Koepke liked thisPaul Koepke liked thisIf like me, you are running a number of computers at home large enough that you hope your wife doesn't find out about them, you owe it to yourself to self-host RustDesk. I searched for a while for a good, fast, cross-platform remote control application that handled different screen resolutions well and had one very important qualification--it had to be free. I experimented with a lot of the usual applications and was very close to breaking my number one rule--I was actually thinking about buying something. Then, thankfully, I found an article on Reddit about RustDesk. In addition to all the things you would expect in remote control software, RustDesk has one of my favorite features--it handles screen resolutions like a pro. Where most applications just shrink or stretch the display to fit your host machine, RustDesk lets you choose Adaptive or Original resolution--letting you very effectively control apps from an old laptop when you connect to the machine in your home office hooked up to a 4K display. RustDesk is quick, manages screen updates very well, and its self-hosting feature is incredible. My home office only runs on a 1Gb switch, and has lets me easily control multiple machines with high resolution and only rarely has a display hiccup. But it recovers nicely, over the course of maybe a second repainting the screen and catching up. Since it's free, I can't even complain about that. But I do have 2 complaints, so you can be prepared if you try it: 1) You can imagine if you are going connect across all your machines you would want a hostname rather than an IP address for your RustDesk server. I am not a network expert, but I couldn't get this to work. The only workaround I could find was updating the hosts file on all my machines, which seemed even worse than a fixed IP address. I ended up using the fixed hardcoded IP address. And I hate that. 2) Resizing a window on a Windows client machine is incredibly frustrating. You can try clicking the window frame a million times without success. You have to just realize going in that resizing a window is very dicey. If you are planning to do it, I recommend some kind of stress relief like meditation or positive affirmations or ibuprofen. But despite these two minor grievances, I think RustDesk is amazing. I run the server on my Xeon-powered NAS machine, and it is extraordinarily convenient, easy to setup, and fast. If like me, you can't bring yourself to pay for little utilities like these, this should be one of the first things you self-host in your homelab.

Paul Koepke liked thisPaul Koepke liked thisI'm embarking on a new adventure after 16 years in tech as Assistant Cider Maker at The Cider Farm! The Cider Farm is one of only a handful cideries in the U.S. that produces estate-grown cider, or cider produced exclusively from apples grown by The Cider Farm. Much like wine where you get the best wines from the best grapes you also get the best cider from the best apples, and the best cider apple varieties have been neglected for the better part of a century in the US. Most of what you find are surplus eating apple varieties made into ciders that lack complexity, depth, and real flavor. It's humbling to be a part of their return with arguably the best cider apples outside of Europe! Here is where I'll also wax philosophical for a bit because I don't see enough of it on Linkedin where 'hustle culture' propaganda is rife- it shouldn't be a privilege to do what you want with your life every day. For most of us the reality is that the best options consist of living out a career/trading your time doing something you'd rather not do every day for money only to retire/then do what you really want to, or relegate those things to nights or weekends. I think it's a sad cycle and is imbalanced with what makes humans happy/life worth living. I can only speak from my own experience but every time I made a decision to maximize my 'career' in terms of money or title I ended up being busier and pulled away from the things that brought me balance and real enjoyment from life. Do that for too long and you only end up doing things outside of work that complement your work, vs the other way around. Remote tech colleagues - if you are ever in Madison come hit up our Tap Room!
