We had a few discussions around the use of #AI to contribute to #open #source projects. The dangers, the pros, and how possibly we might have to turn the internet off to fix some of the issues open source software faces regarding #AI-assisted contributions 😃. I also admire his love and dedication to community building; we share a common passion there 🥳. Rich Bowen reacted on thisRich Bowen reacted on thisAnnouncement: After 26 years at Asbury University as the Assistant Vice President of Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer, I am officially retired. Actually, last month (June) I started my retirement so I’m a little slow in making this announcement. Let me say how incredibly grateful I am for my staff, both present and past, for their hard work and dedication to supporting the mission of Asbury University. Obviously, it’s all because of them that I was able to stay in this role as long as I did. And, it’s because of them that I am comfortable stepping away and turning the leadership reins over to Andy Miller. The IT team sent me off with a retirement reception where they had past IT staff attend with my current staff. It was very moving and deeply honoring to see so many former employees come back to express their thanks and well wishes as I enter retired life. Let me add that the pictures I’ve included captured the current and past IT staff both in a more serious pose and a more “casual” pose where Andy Miller and Kristie Hall are carrying me. That’s a perfect representation of reality — Kristie carried me and made me successful because of all of her hard work behind the scenes. And, Andy is making it possible for me to retire without any reservations that the department and the university will be just fine without me. They’ve got this! Thank you to ALL of the Asbury IT Staff, both current and past. You guys are awesome! I must also give a shoutout to my former boss, Glenn Hamilton. I greatly appreciate your leadership and patience with me these many years. I could not have done it without you. Thank you!

Yesterday I was at LocalGov Drupal Dev Day, and it was good to spend time working side-by-side with people rather than just catching up online. I had read Mark Conroy’s “Build to Share” (https://lnkd.in/eSFwqDbY) post recently, and the themes came through clearly on the day - in how people collaborated, shared context, and worked through problems together. We worked as a blended group, fixing tests, pairing up to clear blockers, and helping each other through the tricky bits. It was also great to see people contributing for the first time, getting changes submitted with support from the wider group. Some of my highlights were the quick, productive sessions with Finn Lewis, Andy Broomfield, Tony B. and Dan Champion. We talked through test fixes, shared different approaches, and getting things unstuck together. That kind of collaboration matters. It’s how shared platforms mature, it’s how risk gets reduced and means councils don’t have to solve the same problems repeatedly. A regex that fits on one line stalled 30 CI jobs for hours. We got a support report — dozens of Testing Farm jobs stuck in "running" state with no signs of progress. VMs were provisioned, SSH connections established, but nothing was happening. The culprit? A regex pattern in tmt's test framework that scans test output for lines containing "error" or "fail". Works fine on normal logs. But the test output from a container build pipeline contained base64-encoded in-toto attestation payloads — single lines over 1,000,000 characters long. On those lines, the greedy wildcard anchors on both sides of the pattern cause the Python regex engine to backtrack through every position before giving up. Even 10,000 characters took 5.4 seconds. The full line would take hours. The fix was straightforward — process line by line with a simpler search instead of running the greedy pattern against the entire file. Same results, completes in 1.1 seconds instead of never. Lessons: - Greedy wildcards on both sides of a regex pattern are a backtracking time bomb waiting for the right input - py-spy is invaluable for diagnosing stuck Python processes in production - The bug that takes down 30 jobs can be a single line of code Full write-up with the debugging steps: https://lnkd.in/gENBz8ZA #Python #Regex #Debugging #CI #OpenSource #SoftwareEngineering
