It was great to be back at the Q Center in St. Charles (near Chicago) to observe Alvarez & Marsal’s Senior Director Foundations course this week. I also joined a panel moderated by Matthew Merhan on what it takes to succeed at this career milestone, the final step before Managing Director (Partner). Early in your consulting career, it’s easy to focus on doing great work - and that absolutely matters. But those who eventually make Partner start building different habits early: ✅ Be a leader: Emulate the behaviours of the most successful leaders around you, many of whom will practice servant leadership (listening, integrity, accountability, humility, etc.) ✅ Build your personal brand: Over time, be known for something distinctive, both internally and in the market ✅ Don’t just impress managers - build client trust: Stay in touch with people at all levels; today’s junior contact could be tomorrow’s decision-maker ✅ Don’t just solve problems - ask better questions: Some of the best learning comes from discomfort and mistakes, and from observing risk management in action ✅ Communicate with impact: Build confidence and constantly look to improve your communication skills ✅ Don’t wait for opportunities but create them: Seek out diverse experiences and leaders; the best consultants become “go-to” people ✅ Start building commercial instinct early: Get exposure to business development and think long-term in every interaction ✅ Find mentors and a support system: More people are willing to help than you might think You don’t need the title to start thinking like a Partner. And the above tips are not only for Senior Directors - they are applicable to all levels or grades in consulting.
