📊 U.S. Labor Market Update – March 2025 The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) reveals a nuanced picture of the U.S. labor market: Job Openings: Decreased by 288,000 to 7.192 million, indicating a potential softening in labor demand. Layoffs: Declined by 222,000 to 1.558 million, suggesting employers are retaining their workforce despite economic uncertainties. Hiring: Experienced a modest increase of 41,000 to 5.411 million, reflecting cautious optimism among businesses. These figures suggest that while employers are becoming more selective in their hiring processes, they are also striving to maintain stability within their existing teams. For organizations, this environment underscores the importance of strategic talent management. There’s a real difference between how contingent and retained recruiter interviews are run, particularly in comms/PR recruiting, and it has less to do with quality and more to do with mandate. Most contingent interviews are designed for efficiency and speed. You confirm the resume, pressure test fit, align on compensation, and decide whether the candidate is strong enough to move forward quickly. The goal is momentum. The underlying question is usually simple: Is this someone I’d be comfortable putting in front of the client? Retained-level interviews serve a different purpose. They’re not just about qualifying talent. They’re about reducing decision risk. When a recruiter is retained, the responsibility shifts. You’re no longer advancing candidates. You’re advising the business. That means the interview has to surface how someone actually operates as a communications leader, not just how they present. You listen for judgment under pressure. You dig into how decisions get made when information is incomplete. You want to understand where things broke down in past roles and why. You pay attention to how the candidate navigates power, politics, and internal tension. Most importantly, you assess what risk this hire introduces inside the organization, at this moment. So the real question isn’t “do I like this candidate?” It’s “how will this person actually operate when the stakes are real?” That’s the difference between screening and advising. Between filling a seat and protecting the business. At senior levels, there’s no margin for getting this wrong.

How’s the job market? This is probably the most common question I’m asked as a recruiter. When I was at the CITT TAC Holiday Get-Together last week I must have been asked about the job market ten times. Right now at SCL Search, we are really, really busy. We have 10 job openings, plus I have another 2 client meetings this week, which could take our total number of searches to 12. Typically we run about 5-6 job openings at a time, so 10-12 is a lot. Does this mean the job market is hot? Not necessarily –a quick search tells us that the unemployment rate in Canada has been trending upward throughout 2025, reaching 7.1% in August, and the number of job vacancies has fallen to a low not seen since March 2020, a 28% decrease over the past year. So apparently, the job market is pretty bad right now. So why is SCL Search so busy? There are a couple of reasons: at SCL Search, we work exclusively in supply chain and logistics, so what we see happening in this sector may not be an accurate reflection of what’s happening across the entire Canadian job market. Further, we are only impacted by what’s happening in a very small segment of the market. If we have just 3-4 clients, each hiring multiple roles, that’s enough to keep us really busy. It doesn’t matter if the rest of the supply chain sector isn’t hiring, if we happen to be working with a few companies who are. So my short answer to the question about the job market is, I hear the job market is slow. But at SCL Search we’re really busy. What’s been your experience? How’s the job market from your perspective?

Commercial and professional temporary staffing hours in the US reached year-to-date highs in the week ending Feb. 28, according to the SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator report. Temp staffing hours rose 2.4% in the week compared to the previous week, which included the Presidents Day holiday. Commercial staffing hours increased 2.1%, while professional staffing hours were up 4.1%. Compared to the same week last year, commercial staffing hours were 3% higher; however, professional staffing hours fell 1%. “Both commercial and professional hours bounced back from the previous week dip caused in part by the Presidents Day holiday,” the report states. “The SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator historical data shows that the Presidents Day holiday has in recent years been marked by a greater dip in professional hours than commercial hours. There is also a geographic factor; while Presidents Day is a federal holiday, a number of states do not observe the holiday with work closures.”

The Hardest Skills to Find in Today’s Manufacturing Talent Market. By Jorge Roldan, President and CEO at Roldan Executive Search Group. Across the U.S. and Mexico, manufacturers are navigating a tight labor market where finding the right talent is harder than ever. While technical know how remains essential, employers report that the real challenge lies in finding professionals who can combine hands-on expertise with strategic thinking and adaptability. Hard Skills That Are Scarce: -Manufacturers consistently struggle to find professionals with: Automation & Controls expertise especially with PLCs, robotics, and Industry 4.0 systems. -Lean Manufacturing & Six Sigma not just certified, but applied in high-volume environments. -Advanced maintenance and reliability engineering essential for uptime and process efficiency. -Supply Chain & Procurement Systems particularly with ERP integration and cost optimization. Soft Skills That Are Even Harder to Find: -What’s often missing in even the most technically qualified candidates: Problem solving under pressure, the ability to troubleshoot on the floor and implement fast solutions. -People leadership, managing line workers with empathy, fairness, and results-driven focus. -Communication across departments especially between engineering, operations, and quality. -Adaptability to change as factories modernize, those who can embrace digital tools thrive. Conclusion: The most competitive manufacturing professionals today are those who bring both deep technical knowledge and strong leadership skills. For companies looking to scale, invest in attracting and retaining those rare individuals who can lead on the floor and in the boardroom. Hope this is helpful for folks who didn't see this. *Before you click the link, a quick note: You’ll see references to 2023 data, even though we’re heading into 2026. That’s not a mistake. Workforce data is intentionally lagged. Employers, schools, and agencies have to report, reconcile, and validate outcomes before trends are analyzed. That takes time, but it also makes the data reliable. More importantly, workforce planning is about multi-year patterns, not reacting to last quarter. If this were real-time, it would be noisy and misleading. This resource hub includes: • Annual Talent Pipeline Report PDFs (current and prior years) • Appendices with deep dives on Top Jobs, skills, credentials, and regional data • Policy recommendations tied directly to labor market realities • Launch webinars and recordings with slides and commentary • A Spring Edition focused specifically on education and training outcomes • Links to the Colorado Talent Dashboard for interactive workforce data Topics covered span: • Labor market conditions and employment projections • Talent supply vs demand by industry • Skills and credential gaps employers are facing • High-growth, high-need occupations (“Top Jobs”) • Education and training alignment • Workforce development and policy priorities Who this is useful for: Hiring managers, business owners, AEC and construction leaders, HR and talent teams, educators, workforce development partners, and anyone making decisions about hiring, training, or long-term workforce strategy in Colorado. This isn’t marketing material. It’s a reality check backed by data. Worth bookmarking if people and talent matter to your work. https://lnkd.in/gWHDkbfH

Re-Shoring US manufacturing is a real goal - and it is happening. Orbic Electronics Manufacturing LLC plans to bring more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs from overseas to the U.S. The Long Island-based designer and manufacturer of connected technology products including cellphones, laptops, wearables, tablets and mobile hotspots, announced that it began developing a 135,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Suffolk County, New York. Orbic's investment includes retrofitting its existing 60,000-square-foot facility and building an additional 75,000 square feet space. Employees of all levels will also receive training at the beginning of their employment period, free of charge. Once completed, the expanded 135,000-square-foot plant will become the company's first large-scale U.S. factory, with an anticipated production capacity of 5 million devices annually. The company is also exploring additional locations for manufacturing facilities in Suffolk County and hopes to open three more plants and create a total of 1,000 jobs over the next five years.
