The place where underwriting judgment, risk appetite, and operational execution actually intersect. That layer has historically been human: ��� underwriting judgment • broker relationships • contextual interpretation of risk • institutional knowledge built over decades Now AI is beginning to operate inside that same layer. I’m heading into my third week now, and I’m genuinely enjoying it so far. :D Looking back, this role feels like a meaningful next step for me. My time at Zendesk taught me a lot about helping companies solve real problems with technology, and the past several months building Blackman AI with my friend Michael Poage gave me an even deeper appreciation for how quickly this space is evolving. That’s a big part of why I’m excited to be here. There’s a lot of potential with Cytora in bringing AI into the insurance industry in ways that are actually useful, practical, and helpful to the people doing the work every day, and I’m grateful to be part of that. Stuart Kaplan liked thisStuart Kaplan liked thisInsurance was invented in a coffee house more than 300 years ago. And, 300-plus years later, it’s still running on paperwork no one has time to read. In my recent conversation with Jonathan Crystal, CEO of Crystal Venture Partners, one stat stuck with me. Underwriters only get to about 40% of the submissions that cross their desks. The rest? They sit, untouched, until they expire or get declined by default. Ick. For two decades, the industry has been “going digital” but mostly by turning paper into PDFs and fax into email. The workflow didn’t change. The backlog just moved onto a screen. Now AI is forcing something very different. Jonathan said not by faster pricing. Not cheaper pricing. But the right pricing for the risk. For the first time, he said it’s possible to actually read the file and extract what matters. And that will open the door to something much bigger. Risk that’s priced continuously, dynamically, and transparently. And a better customer experience. Those are the companies he’s investing in now. The AI-first companies that have the opportunity to change the game. It was an interesting conversation, from someone who spent a lot of time on the other side of the table at his family-owned insurance brokerage.

My kids have never been to Disney and that wasn’t an accident. When they asked, we always changed the conversation by making it sound like it wasn’t fun. We said it was really expensive and you had to wait for hours just to get on one ride. The truth is I avoided it because Disney felt like a job. I know, I know. Just tattoo “worst parent ever” on my forehead. But hear me out…for over a decade, Disney meant one thing to me: Sales kickoffs, client events, conference rooms, badges, early mornings and late nights. So I rewrote the story for them before they could write their own. “Trust me, it’s not worth it.” “I’ve been there, it’s not what you think.” “You wouldn’t even like it.” It’s funny how association works. How the meaning we attach to something shapes how we experience it and how sometimes, we hand that meaning to the people around us without even knowing it. The thing itself isn’t bad.
