Ted Murphy posted thisThe meltdown in AI tech stocks has been wild. Markets are punishing companies for huge AI investments. Capex is exploding. Margins look worse in the short term. Investors are freaking out. I think it is incredibly short sighted. Because this is not just spending. This is them owning their destiny (and sadly yours, too). When ChatGPT or Gemini goes down, people already panic. Work stops. Teams scramble. Entire processes halt. We have seen this movie before. When Amazon goes down or Instagram glitches, businesses and consumers go down with them. A small hiccup becomes a global economic event. These companies don’t build software apps. They build infrastructure. And whoever owns infrastructure doesn’t just provide a service… They make the rules. That’s why I think the market is being short sighted punishing tech companies for massive AI investment. These companies aren’t spending recklessly. They’re doing the most rational thing possible, with the data and vision to understand what is at stake. They must make sure they are never dependent on someone else for the most foundational technologies of the future. Because dependence means: - Building your future on rented ground - Accepting someone else’s pricing - Living with someone else’s priorities - Getting crushed by someone else’s platform decisions The companies investing today want to own the full stack: - Models - Data centers - Compute - Chips - Energy - Distribution Not because it’s glamorous… But because it’s control. That is why these companies would be foolish not to invest. If you want to control your destiny, you must control the foundation. You must be the infrastructure that others build upon. Whoever owns the infrastructure makes the rules. Pricing. Access. Decisions. Bias. The companies building their own models, chips, data centers, and energy capacity are making sure they are not dependent or beholden to anyone else. Look at Apple. Apple underspent on AI infrastructure for years. The basic functionality of Siri was revolutionary at one point… now shed a tear when I ask Siri a question and it has to ask me if I want to ask ChatGPT. It shouldn’t have happened that way. Now they are paying the price and leaning on an external partnership with Google to try to keep up. And the problem is once you start depending on another company’s infrastructure, it is incredibly hard to break away. Google is only going to become more capable as they continue to spend. The gap gets harder to close over time. So yes, the numbers are shocking right now. But the long game is to own the infrastructure. As a human, I hate how dependent we are becoming on this small group of companies. But as an investor, I understand exactly why they are doing it. Infrastructure is power. Control. Dominance. And we are watching it get built in real time.

Ted Murphy liked thisTed Murphy liked this💜 One month into HealthEquity and I am already confident this is exactly where I’m meant to be. 💜 Last week, I had the chance to attend a new experience called Trailhead, which brought together new hires as we kick off our journey with HealthEquity. It was such a meaningful way to build connections right off the bat. What stood out most to me was how much connection is truly prioritized. You could feel it in the way people showed up. Leaders taking the time to sit down and have real conversations, people genuinely getting to know each other, and those in-between moments where everything starts to click and connect back to our mission of saving and improving lives by empowering healthcare consumers. It made a big company feel a lot smaller, really quickly. It was also really special getting to meet my team (Caity Barney, LaTrice Baker, MHRM, and Gina June Petersen) in person for the first time! I also got to meet Ashley Griffith, who went above and beyond to help me through the hiring process (the name change paperwork alone deserves a shoutout), and BreAnna McKee, who led my onboarding and made those early days feel seamless. And on top of that, spending time talking with People Team leadership Calvin Sun and Cheryl (Johnson) King, and getting real face time with senior leaders across the organization, including our CEO Scott Cutler and our Founder Steve Neeleman, made it really clear how much connection is built into the experience here. It’s not lost on me how rare and meaningful that kind of access is, especially at a company of this size. Being able to see the momentum firsthand, and feel like I’m truly a part of what’s being built here, was one of those moments you don’t forget. No wonder HealthEquity was recognized again as a Great Place To Work!✨ In my role, I'll be focusing on the remote employee experience and how we can extend moments like this beyond being in person, making sure the connections built here don’t stop when people leave the room. For remote employees, those in-person touchpoints are what keep that momentum going and help connection continue to grow over time. Just wrapped two strong days of culture building and team time with many of Rocket’s senior leaders. One of the hardest things to learn when you join a company is how the place actually works. Acquisitions only make that harder. At Rocket, we take that seriously. One way is through a tradition Dan Gilbert created called ISMs Day. It brings people together to learn not just what our ISMs are, but how they show up in real decisions across the business. They shape how we prioritize, how we solve problems, how we move and how we show up for clients. Over time, that shared understanding creates consistency. And as we scale, consistency matters. The other way is simpler. Time together. Energy together. A little friendly competition. So we skipped the town halls and went straight to the pickleball courts. Between the ankle breakers and the team exercises, it was a good reminder that culture is not built in slides. It lives in the small things we do every day. Every business needs Standard Operating Procedures. Here’s how I build them (using AI): 1. Record yourself on Loom doing a task 2. Upload the recording to Google Gemini (the only model that lets you upload video) 3. Use this prompt: “Analyze this video. Identify every step that can be automated using AI or no-code tools like Make, Zapier, or n8n. Then outline an ideal future workflow with those automations implemented.” Double check the output to make sure no steps were missed. You now have an AI-optimized process that can be partially/fully automated using simple tools. Go implement.

If you run a six-figure agency and you've looked into selling, the advice you've found was probably written for businesses five or ten times your size. Hire a broker. Get SBA financing for the buyer. Expect a big check at closing. But that's not how it typically works at this level. For many six-figure agencies, traditional financing is harder to come by. The client base is small, so losing one or two accounts has a real impact on revenue. Plus, revenue is often concentrated in a handful of clients. And if the owner was the primary source of new business, that lead source leaves with them. Lenders see that risk, and many won't finance the deal. So what does a deal actually look like? At this level, many deals are structured as revenue shares or earn-outs. A smaller amount upfront, with the rest paid over time based on how well the clients retain. The total payout depends on retention, which means the transition period matters enormously. If clients leave during the handoff, the seller's earn-out shrinks. For most six-figure agencies, this type of deal structure is the most realistic path to getting paid for what you built. And when you compare it to the most common alternative, closing the doors and getting nothing, it looks a lot better. At ACP, the deal doesn't depend on your agency qualifying for SBA financing. That means we can move faster and structure deals more flexibly than a buyer who needs to secure third-party financing before anything happens. We may not always offer the highest price. But we'll give you a fair price, we can move quickly, and your clients are transitioning to a team that's been doing this work for 15 years.
