Day 76/100 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆: 𝗟𝗩𝗕–𝗗𝗕𝗦 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 — 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 In November 2020, Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) faced a severe cash crunch after years of losses and rising bad loans. To protect depositors and maintain financial stability, the RBI stepped in with an emergency resolution. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a 30-day moratorium on Lakshmi Vilas Bank after years of losses, high NPAs, and capital erosion. Customers were temporarily restricted to withdrawals of up to ₹25,000 as the bank struggled to stay afloat. Last week, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released new draft directions on capital market exposure. On paper, the limits seem straightforward. - 20% of capital for direct exposures. - 40% overall. These new directions also highlight new risks which can turn simple oversights into major compliance escalations. For eg. An NBFC provides structured loans for acquiring a stake in a listed company. If these loans are misclassified as regular credit exposure, the reported capital market exposure will be understated, potentially triggering a breach during audits. This also means that there are now additional governance steps that compliance teams should be aware about. Every step needing more coordination between multiple teams. One lapse and the entire organization is looking at a penalty.

SEBI New Rules Shake up the Banks! SEBI has implemented new regulations to transform the composition of sectoral indexes such as Nifty Bank and FinNifty. The regulator is now limiting the influence any one bank can have on these indices and also mandating the inclusion of additional stocks to ensure they are more diversified and not overly controlled by a small number of major players. Within the updated structure, for indices linked to banking/finance sectors that involve derivatives:- - A maximum of 20% allocation for any single stock. - The combined percentage of the three leading stocks must not surpass 45% of the overall index. - The index should comprise a minimum of 14 constituent stocks (increased from a smaller number earlier). This implies that major players like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, which together held significant portions of Nifty Bank, will experience a decrease in their dominance. Funds that follow these indices might need to adjust their holdings accordingly. For average investors, the main point: these modifications seek to make the banking/finance sector indices more reflective of the overall market, likely decreasing risk from dependence on a few stocks. Starting October 4, 2025, India's Reserve Bank (RBI) launches Phase 1 of continuous clearing under the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), slashing processing from up to 2 days to mere hours. Banks will scan cheques continuously from 10 AM-4 PM, sending images instantly to drawee banks for confirmation by 7 PM—unconfirmed ones auto-approve for same-day settlement. Funds release within 1 hour post-settlement, boosting efficiency and cutting risks for customers and businesses. Phase 2 follows January 3, 2026, with 3-hour expiry.
