Rodrigo Melgar, 27, was arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a woman who was walking home from the gym on July 19, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The victim was on a pedestrian bridge at Valleyheart Drive and Laurel Grove Avenue when she was grabbed by her hair from behind, thrown to the ground, and penetrated with a foreign object.

Witnesses who saw the assault intervened, causing the assailant to run off.

Melgar was arrested in connection with the case after LAPD received multiple tips that led to his investigation. He faces charges that include sexual penetration with a foreign object.

Detectives believe there may be other victims due to the nature of the assault. He’s known to have frequently used local bus routes as his main means of transportation.

Glendale firefighter charged with murder in death of wife at North Hollywood home

Andrew Jimenez was charged with murder with an allegation of using an axe as a deadly weapon.

Prior to his arrest, the defendant was a paramedic and firefighter with the Glendale Fire Department, which he joined in 2008. He was placed off duty and on administrative leave following his arrest.

Mayra Jimenez was a third-grade teacher at Wilshire Park Elementary School in Koreatown. The school held a vigil in her honor days after her death; her students and colleagues remembered her as being a dedicated educator who made class fun.

The theft was initially reported at around 6:27 a.m. Thursday when someone called police about a man trying to steal a Porsche, the Los Angeles Police Department told NBCLA.

When officers arrived at the location, they noticed the gray Porsche hooked up to a black pickup truck. When the suspected thief refused to follow the officers’ orders and surrender, a pursuit began along Tujunga Avenue at around 7:05.

As the truck driver ran away from police at a high speed, the Porsche was uncontrollably dragged through the street as its front end was being scraped along the curbside.

The tow bar between the pickup and the stolen vehicle appeared to have broken off, with the Porsche coming to a stall in front of a carwash. Cellphone video showed its hood and front dumper were heavily damaged.

Even after losing the stolen car, the suspected thief kept driving. After 10 minutes later, the chase eventually came to an end near Sherman Way and Canal Loop, according to the LAPD.

The suspect was taken into custody for felony evading.

The identity of the suspect and victim were not immediately available.

Officials said the man fell up to 45 feet into the concrete space at around 3:07 p.m. near Burbank Boulevard and Vineland Avenue.

It was not immediately clear how long the rescue operation would last.

By 3:40 p.m., firefighters were able to rescue the man and took him to a nearby hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

No firefighters were injured during the operation.

The ordeal began when the woman spotted three dogs locked inside a hot car Wednesday afternoon with a window rolled down, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

As the woman expressed concern for the tiny gap left at the top of the window, the owner of the car and dogs came out and began arguing with her, police said. When the verbal confrontation escalated, the man made homophobic remarks and struck her with a possible metal pipe, the woman told the LAPD.

After the woman escaped the scene and received medical treatment for her hand injury, she called police and police took a felony hate crime report.

The woman told the LAPD that she believed the altercation became heated because of her gender status, authorities told NBCLA.

Detectives Wednesday expected to make an arrest in the case under the ongoing investigation, according to Capt. Warner Castillo.

Neighbors told NBCLA they awoke to find their car windows smashed and items missing from inside the vehicles, which were parked in the area of Erwin Street off Cahuenga Boulevard. A row of cars had side windows shattered with glass on the sidewalk and inside the cars.

Los Angeles police received a report at about 5 a.m. of someone breaking into cars. One woman said every car targeted appeared to have the passenger-side window shattered, including her vehicle.

She said items were missing from the glove compartment, seat pocket and other areas inside the car.

No arrests were reported. The LAPD encouraged victims to visit the police station and bring video of the damage.

According to the LAPD, detectives were able to identify a pattern of crimes and connect them to a serial theft suspect. 

The thefts occurred between January 9, 2026 and June 9, 2026 in North Hollywood and Hollywood. 

“In each incident, the suspect contacted sellers of collectable gaming cards through online peer-to-peer marketplaces and arranged to meet them to purchase items in cash. Investigators determined that the suspect would meet near ATM machines and portray that he had just withdrawn money, placing it in a bank envelope,” the LAPD said in a statement. 

The cards were said to have been Pokemon cards. 

According to the LAPD, the suspected thief mixed some genuine bills with other counterfeit bills when making the purchase and the sellers did not realize the money was fake until they had left. 

Investigators and the Huntington Park Police Department located the suspected thief on June 11 during a traffic stop in the 2500 block of Zoe Avenue in Huntington Park. 

Investigators located multiple collectable cards along with counterfeit $100 bills, LAPD said.

The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Zachary Mitchell, a resident of Los Angeles.

Mitchell was booked for Grand Theft at Van Nuys Jail. The case is being presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration, LAPD said.

Detectives urge anyone else who has not reported a theft but were victimized by Mitchell to contact the LAPD immediately.

Fire crews responded to the 11000 block of W. Hartsook St. at around 3 a.m. to help rescue the man who had fallen into an approximately 3 foot wide and 30 feet deep hole. 

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, firefighters lowered an oxygen mask for the man due to the air quality inside of the hole. 

Firefighters used an aerial ladder truck to create a high point for a rope rescue and finally got the man out after about an hour, LAFD said. 

The man was transported to a local hospital. His condition was not known.

Police responded at about 9 a.m. to the 6100 block of Rhodes Avenue near Calvert after a report of a suspicious package. Details about the item were not immediately available.

A bomb squad was called to the location.

There were no threats made in association with the object.

Evacuations were in place for the immediate area.

The burglary happened at around 7 p.m. on Westpark Drive near Riverside Drive off the 170 Freeway.

The homeowner, who was not present during the theft, was alerted by a neighborhood that someone may have been on the property in the last few days. The house has been under construction following a fire.

Police said a garage window had been broken out, and bedding and other evidence suggested that the suspect had been staying in the garage.

The homeowner reported that over $200,000 of art and antiques were stolen, the LAPD added.  L

No arrests were made in the case as the investigation continued.

The verdict came at the end of a civil trial that stems from the December 2021 shooting death of 14-year-old Valentina Peralta, who had been shopping for clothes with her mother when an LAPD officer opened fire on a man armed with a bike lock who had attacked two women at the business.

Her family filed a lawsuit over the shooting death, leading to the civil trial. Attorney General Rob Bonta previously determined that no criminal charges would be filed against the officer, stating the evidence showed the officer believed he was acting in self-defense or in defense of others.

Officer William Doresy Jones Jr., who testified at the trial about his training and the capabilities of the assault rifle he used in the shooting, was one of several officers who responded to the store.

The Peralta family’s attorney said they were seeking to show that Jones was “negligent in his duties as a police officer,” not accusing him of deliberately shooting the girl. Attorney Haytham Faraj asked Jones whether he was too “excited” to use his firearm for the first time in real life.

“Absolutely not,” Jones replied. “That’s the last thing I want to do.”

Valentina’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking more than $100 million in damages.

Police released body-camera video of the encounter with the 24-year-old man inside the store. That footage included images showing the man a woman, beating her with the bike lock as officers arrived.

The video also captured the sound of police gunfire as officers found the man, still wielding the cable lock in his hand. He was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.

The LAPD video included 911 calls, one of which included a store employee telling a dispatcher about the man attacking people inside the store. In another 911 call, a woman reported the sound of shots being fired in the store, saying there’s “a guy with a gun.”

No gun was found at the scene.

In a statement, Los Angeles police said officers did not know the dressing room was occupied. Valentina was found after the shooting during a search for additional attackers.

According to Bonta’s office, investigators “concluded that the evidence does not show, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the officer involved acted without the intent defend himself and others from what he reasonably believed to be imminent death or serious bodily injury. Therefore, there is insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution of the officer. As such, no further action will be taken in this case.”

The office recommended that the LAPD consider making changes to “improve lines of communication in response to ‘immediate action and rapid deployment’ scenarios.”

Valentina attended High Tech Los Angeles Charter School, where she had just passed her math and physics exams.

The family later sued the city.

The city Police Commission ruled in 2022 that the officer violated department policy in the shooting. The panel determined that the first shot he fired was within policy, but the second and third were not. Then-Chief Michel Moore and determined that the officer “inaccurately assessed” the threat posed by the suspect, saying he should have been able to ascertain that he was not dealing with an active shooter.

The lot on Varna Avenue in North Hollywood has been a breeding ground for crime and illegal activity, neighbors said, as homeless people often gathered on the property.

“Kids can’t play on the street. People can’t walk their dogs. Mother’s can’t walk their baby strollers,” JJ Azizian, a neighbor, said.

After the city finally declared the property a public nuisance, sanitization crews arrived at the lot Thursday morning and started clearing out the debris.

Images from NewsChopper4 before the cleanup showed piles of trash across the lot as well as makeshift tents and an RV.

For neighbors like Azizian, the lot has been more than the inconvenient and unattractive addition to the community. He said a number of criminal activities originated from the lot.

“There have been shootings here. There have been drug deals gone bad with people yelling and fights in the street,” he said.

Community members have been pushing city officials to do something about the property for over 15 years, making reports to both the city of Los Angeles and the LAPD.

“Multiple 911 calls for one, documenting everything that has been going on, organizing with other frustrated neighbors,” Robert Baindourov, a neighbor, said.

But city officials said they couldn’t move quickly because the property owner failed to respond and comply.

Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, who has been representing the area when he took office in 2024, said he and his staff began the cleanup process last year.

“Part of the reason why it took so long was to make sure that we made every attempt and exhausted every opportunity to connect with the property owner so that we go through all appropriate channels,” Nazarian said.

Since 2023, there have been 28 calls made out to police and fire about the lot, according to the councilmember.

“I have a message for all owners who allow their properties to become a nuisance or hazard. Fix it yourself,” Nazarian warned. “Trust me, you don’t have the city or government to walk in and take over because when it does – the cost more than quadruples.”

The owner of the lot is expected to pay for the cleanup, which will take several days.

NBC Los Angeles attempted to make contact with the property owner Thursday but did not hear back.

Some neighbors on the 7700 block of Varna Avenue say they’ve grown frustrated with mounting trash and violence associated with the property.

According to one resident in the neighborhood, the original house that was on the lot burned down, leaving the property vacant for more than 10 years. He alleges that the property’s new owner simply abandoned the lot.

“We all see homeless people go in the back doing drugs,” said David Abrahamian, who lives in the area.

“Multiple shootings, overdose deaths, so I can tell you there’s been stolen cars left in front of my house a couple of times,” said Robert Baindourov, who also lives in the neighborhood. “I personally have seen somebody stop a drive-by shooting.”

According to the city, there have been more than two dozen calls about the property.

“Since the beginning of 2023 alone, there had been 28 calls for service,” said LA City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian. “Of the 28 were initiated by community members, 10 were initiated by police officers.”

Nazarian said the lot should be cleaned up by the end of the week. While neighbors rejoice in that promise, they say they hope the city will also take steps to keep the squatters from returning.

The crash at about 2:30 a.m. was on Colfax Avenue north of Calvert Street, where an Acura traveling northbound hit two people after they got out of the rear driver’s side of a Toyota Camry. The Acura was traveling at unsafe speeds, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), the Chandler Bicycle Connection will upgrade existing, 5-foot-wide bike lanes along Chandler Boulevard to protected bike lanes by adding physical barriers like bollards to separate the bike lanes from vehicle traffic.

LADOT said the project is designed to close the gap between the existing Orange Line Bike Path and Chandler Bike Paths with “a seamless, low-stress bicycle corridor for people of all ages and abilities, not just experienced riders.”

Los Angeles City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian said the task at hand is all about making the streets safer for Angelenos.

“Protected bike lanes work,” Nazarian said at a press conference. “They reduce crashes, they slow traffic, they make it clear where everyone belongs on the road.”

Nazarian said the project is designed to strengthen connections across the San Fernando Valley by linking neighborhoods to the North Hollywood Metro Station and the NoHo Arts District.

“If we want people to use public transit, we have to make it safe and easy to get there,” he explained.

The Chandler Bicycle Connection will also feature 33 upgraded crosswalks, 15 bike signal intersections, and 35 bike crossings.

“I want to build a city where you don’t have to get in the car for every single trip, where families feel comfortable biking together, where seniors feel safe crossing the street, where infrastructure actually reflects how people live,” Nazarian added.

The protected bike lanes are expected to be completed over the next few years.

The officers were monitoring the North Hollywood neighborhood near Whitsett Fields Park Thursday afternoon when they spotted three people acting suspiciously inside a car, the LAPD told NBC4 Investigates.

When the officers checked the car’s registration, they learned it expired a year ago. Yet the car had a current registration sticker on the plate, police said.

The people inside the car, two men and one woman, were asked to step out of the car as the vehicle was impounded. Once the officers began searching inside the car, they found a stolen gun under the seat and a pound of methamphetamine.

“Three suspects off the streets — these individuals were most likely delivering methamphetamine to the unhoused individuals in tents and RV’s located by the parks,” LAPD North Hollywood Commanding Officer Cpt. Warner Castillo told NBC Los Angeles Friday.

The two men were arrested for narcotics with a firearm. The woman was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

The case remained under investigation as it was set to be presented to the LA County District Attorney’s Office for criminal charges.

Kevin Sullivan and Wilmer Hernandez, both workers of Circus Liquor, were on the clock Tuesday afternoon when they suddenly heard a loud noise. Just outside their store, they saw a Hyundai EV had crashed into a power pole, causing it to catch fire. The driver of the vehicle was still inside, so the two men swooped in to help.

“It ignited, I rushed over and pried the door open and took him out of the burning vehicle,” Sullivan said.

“We pulled him out of the car and he was kind of unconscious, that guy,” Hernandez said. “And then that’s how we just pulled him out.”

Surveillance footage captured the nerve-rattling rescue.

The video shows heavy smoke coming from the car, as well as a small fire coming from it. Hernandez is seen trying to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher, then he and Sullivan are seen going to the driver’s side door, guiding the driver to a safe part of the parking lot, along with a woman who was nearby.

Shortly after the rescue, the flames coming from the car grew, fully engulfing it. In the chaos, power lines toppled due to the crash, creating a more dangerous situation.

Still, Hernandez and Sullivan said they wouldn’t have done anything different since they were able to help save a life.

“The electrical wires came down and after the fact, someone said, ‘You know, you guys could have been electrocuted,’ and I didn’t think. I just ran.

“After it happened, we thought, ‘Yeah, we could have gotten hurt, too,’ but at the moment, we just did what was right,” Hernandez said.

“It’s what you’re supposed to do, you know? You’re supposed to help people,” Sullivan said.

The San Fernando Valley liquor store known for its giant circus clown sign has appeared in several films, including “Clueless,” “Blue Thunder” and “Alpha Dog.”

The collision happened on Burbank Boulevard and Vineland Avenue at around 12 noon.

The car that crashed into the power pole was an EV, which created a stubborn auto fire for fire crews to put out, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. 

The scene became more precarious for neighbors and firefighters as the downed power lines from the crash forced crews to try to extinguish the blaze from afar.

Two people were evaluated for minor injuries, the LAFD said. No one was taken to a hospital.

The intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Vineland Avenue was closed temporarily.

The shooting was reported just after 8 p.m. in the 11000 block of Kittridge Street, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jader Chaves.

The victim, a 17-year-old male, was struck in the eye by gunfire and was transported to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Police said four males between 17 and 18 years old fled the area toward Vanowen Street in a black Honda Accord. A firearm was used in the shooting, authorities said.

No arrests have been made, and the firearm has not been recovered, police said.

Stephanie Stevenson is the owner of Stephanie Stevenson Latin Dance Studio, where she offers variations of salsa lessons for adults and kids. She says she hasn’t seen the dancers at her studio for nearly a month, since she’s been rehearsing to perform in the Super Bowl Halftime show with Bad Bunny.

“When I went out there in the stadium, I was like, ‘Whoa,’ because I never danced in front of that many people,” said Jade San Pedro, Stevenson’s 10-year-old daughter.

The mother-daughter duo received private invitations to audition and they spent weeks rehearsing for the big moment.

“I have big dreams, but this surpassed all of my dreams,” Stevenson said. “This is like we are floating. We are floating today.”

Stevenson said she was immensely proud to participate in the momentous occasion not only as her profession, but also as her role as a mother.

“To do it as a dancer and get this opportunity is one thing, but to get it as a mother and my daughter is a dancer, it’s just something else,” she said.

“I was so happy to do it with my mom,” San Pedro added.

Jean Paul San Pedro, Stevenson’s husband, was home in Los Angeles watching his wife and daughter on television. He said the pride he has in them is nearly indescribable.

“When she popped up on that screen, I mean, it’s like everything leaves your body,” he said. “You can’t believe it.”

Stevenson said she had the added honor of representing the country of her parents’ nationality.

“I come from parents who immigrated here from Chile,” she said. “I carried the Chilean flag at the Super Bowl. For us, it’s everything.”

Officers responded near the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Vineland Avenue sometime before 4:45 p.m. Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. One person suffering from a gunshot wound was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

Police said one potential suspect was detained.

In a statement, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson said the East Valley High School principal sent a notice to parents and guardians on the matter, saying no students were harmed.

“The Los Angeles School Police Department will have an officer on campus providing direct support to our school community and will be providing directed patrol in the neighborhood,” the notice read. “Our school will also provide resources for students who may need additional mental health support because of this incident.”

Details on what led up to the shooting were not clear.

Mayra Jimenez, 46, a beloved teacher from Wilshire Park Elementary School, was dedicated, patient and a model educator, according to those who spoke at a vigil held at the school where she worked. “I didn’t even want to come to school because I wanted to see my teacher, but I already know that she’s in my heart,” said Benjamin Maical, who was a student in Jimenez’s current class.

Students said they loved Jimenez’s ability to make learning fun and accessible to them, while her colleagues and students’ parents admired the genuine passion for teaching she had.

“She was an amazing teacher,” said David Lopez, a parent. “She was the epitome of what a teacher is supposed to be.”

Jimenez was killed earlier this week due to multiple blunt force trauma, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The woman’s husband, 45-year-old Andrew Jimenez, approached officers at a police station on Wednesday seeking a welfare check on his wife. When officers arrived at the couple’s North Hollywood home early that morning, they found Mayra dead. Andrew, who was a firefighter and paramedic with the Glendale Fire Department, was arrested and charged with murder with an allegation of using an axe as a deadly weapon.

The victim’s loved ones are now left coping with losing her in such a violent way.

“Ms. Jimenez, I never got to say thank you in person. Thank you for standing up for our teachers,” said Tracy Park, a parent.

Andrew Jimenez faces up to 26 years to life in prison if convicted.

The investigation into what police said appeared to be a deadly case of domestic violence unfolded after a man approached officers Wednesday at a police station and asked for a welfare check on his wife, the LAPD said. Officers arrived at the home in the 5000 block of Satsuma Avenue at around 4:25 a.m. and found a woman dead.

“When they entered the home, they found a female in her 50s who was deceased and appeared to be suffering from multiple blunt force trauma,” said Lt. Guy Golan.

The man who made the welfare check request was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of murder, according to the LAPD. He was later identified as firefighter and paramedic Jimenez, who served in the Glendale Fire Department since 2008.

The victim was identified as his wife, 55-year-old Mayra Jimenez.

“Homicide investigators conducted interviews, reviewed videos, and processed the crime scene. Their investigation revealed that the victim and suspect were in a marital relationship and that this was an incident of domestic violence,” said the LAPD.

Jimenez was placed off duty and on administrative leave, according to the City of Glendale.

In a statement, the city of Glendale said, “The Glendale Fire Department has been notified by LAPD that an off-duty member of the department has been detained in connection with an active homicide investigation in the North Hollywood area. LAPD is the lead investigating agency and the matter is ongoing.”

Jimenez faces up to 26 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Arraignment was scheduled for Friday.

“The domestic violence death of Mayra Jimenez is a devastating reminder of the persistent scourge of intimate partner violence in our communities,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. “No one, including those sworn to protect others, is above the law, and we will hold the defendant accountable for this horrific crime and bring justice to Ms. Jimenez and her loved ones. Too often, cases of domestic violence go unreported and have the potential to end tragically, as in this instance. I want to urge anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse to contact the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 978-3600.”

Surveillance video captured the masked man barging into the Laundry King, wielding what the LAPD described as a metal pipe or rod. He demanded that employees open the store’s safe, but staff told him they did not have access.

Moments later, the owner’s wife entered the business and became a direct target of the attacker.

“He started shoving people, hitting them, and hitting my wife… throwing her to the ground,” said owner Varden Kostanian, who operates five Laundry King locations across the area. “When I saw the footage, I was devastated.”

A customer had already called the police as the chaos unfolded. LAPD arrived quickly and officers arrested the suspected attacker.

Kostanian said business plummeted within minutes as word of the attack spread.

“I’ve never seen my laundromat empty like this,” said Kostanian. The business owner noted that safety concerns in the area have been ongoing for years — prompting him to employ a security guard nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Kostanian says he is considering implementing 24‑hour security, though the cost could potentially put him out of business.

“I have to decide on a different kind of protocol or have security 24 hours but then that means I’m gonna have to go bankrupt paying my security guard. Unbelievable,” said Kostanian.

The person approached the LAPD North Hollywood station’s front desk with a live mortar round, according to LAPD Capt. Warner Castillo.

As the bomb squad headed to the station, people were asked to stay away from the area.

If people find any devices that could be explosive, they should call 911 without moving them, the LAPD said. 

A few months ago, the LAPD Foothill Station had to be evacuated after a box containing military devices was left outside the station.

Armed gun theft suspect shot in altercation with Burbank police

Officers responded to the residence in the 4300 block of Willowcrest Avenue around 6:30 p.m. after a suspect forced entry into a home by breaking either the front or side door, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The person inside the home was housesitting for a family member, said police. According to police, the victim confronted the suspect, which led to a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, the suspect reportedly threw an e-bike at the victim. The victim then shot the suspect in the legs with a .40 caliber firearm, police said.

About 20 minutes later, after the first burglary call, officers responded to another call to a nearby location about a person who had been shot. Here, investigators confirmed the individual was the suspect from the break-in.

Details about the suspect were not immediately released.

Several social media reports of a middle-aged man asking women for help moving boxes into his vehicle have been flagged to the Los Angeles Police Department, it said in a statement on Friday. The department described the behavior as a “scam” and warned women to call police if they come into contact with him.

A detailed description of the man in question was not provided.

“Trust your instincts and remove yourself from situations that feel uncomfortable,” LAPD said in a statement. “Stay cautious of unsolicited approaches—scammers and predators often appear friendly, helpful, or overly urgent. Never feel pressured to make quick decisions, and always remain alert.”

LAPD added that detectives are investigating the matter and have met with women who’ve been targeted by the man.

“I don’t remember the exact number in the classroom, but it was huge,” Rausch said. “It was somewhere around 70, and she taught all of those kids and did a wonderful job.

“She was just a wonderful woman.”

The beloved chaplain for Loyola Chicago’s men’s basketball team died Thursday at 106.

She stepped down from her role with the university in August due to health issues. She remained an adviser to the school in the final months of her life.

“In many roles at Loyola over the course of more than 60 years, Sister Jean was an invaluable source of wisdom and grace for generations of students, faculty, and staff,” Loyola President Mark C. Reed said. “While we feel grief and a sense of loss, there is great joy in her legacy. Her presence was a profound blessing for our entire community and her spirit abides in thousands of lives. In her honor, we can aspire to share with others the love and compassion Sister Jean shared with us.”

Rausch remembered Sister Jean as a positive and inspiring presence in the lives of young students.

“She inspired all of us,” he said. “In fact, that’s really why I became a priest because she was so enthusiastic about religious life.”

Some of the players on Loyola Chicago’s team were 80 years younger than Sister Jean, usually seated in the stands wearing team colors and a matching scarf, during their 2018 tournament run that ended with a 69-57 loss to Michigan the national semifinals.

She was a pillar of support, win or lose.

“Sister Jean just said it was a great season,” forward Aundre Jackson said after the loss. “She was so happy to be on this run with us and we should keep our heads high and be happy with what we accomplished.”

Loyola, which helped break down racial barriers by winning the 1963 national championship with four Black starters, had not played in the March Madness tournament since a Sweet 16 loss to Georgetown in 1985.

Teammate Donte Ingram recalled Sister Jean’s pre-game prayers and post-game emails.

“Sister Jean, she has meant so much to me personally and obviously the team,” Loyola’s Donte Ingram said after hitting one of the biggest shots in school history, a 3-pointer that lifted the team past Miami 64-62 in the first round of the 2018 tournament. “She is there before every game. She’s saying a prayer before every game. After the game, she sends a general email to the team. And then at the end of the email, it’ll be individualized: ‘Hey, Donte, you did this, you rebounded well tonight. Even though they were out there to get you, you still came through for the team.’ She’s just so special, her spirit. She’s just so bright, and she means so much to the city of Chicago and Loyola obviously and the team.”

Cardinal Roger Mahony, who served as archbishop of Los Angeles in California from 1985 to 2011, also was a student of Sister Jean’s.

“She knew more about these teams than I think the coach did,” Mahony said. “She said, ‘Ok guys, they’re only 50% at rebounds, and 30% at 3 point shots. That means a lot of balls coming off that backboard, get up there and get those balls.’

“Her legacy is being an incredible, inspiring former of young people. Who formed young people. Not just taught, formed them to be good people. So she inspired everyone, a real gift from God.”

Born in San Francisco in 1919, Sister Jean grew up in a devoutly Catholic family. She witnessed the impact of the Great Depression, World War II and the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, which she recalls crossing on foot when it opened in 1937.

She followed her calling to the order’s motherhouse in Dubuque, Iowa, where she made her vows. She went on to teach at Catholic schools in Chicago and Southern California, where she also coached girls’ basketball, before she ended at Mundelein College — on the Chicago lakefront — in the 1960s. The school became affiliated with Loyola in 1991, and Sister Jean was hired to help students with the transition.

In 1994, she was asked to help student basketball players boost their grades — “the booster shooter” she called herself, and later that year she was named chaplain of the men’s basketball team. The role, she wrote in her memoir, became “the most transformational and transcendent position” of her life.

“Sports are very important because they help develop life skills,” she said. “And during those life skills, you’re also talking about faith and purpose.”

Her celebrity continued to grow and her life continued to be celebrated in her final years. At 100, Sister Jean received an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis. On her 103rd birthday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker was among the political officials dedicating the day in her honor. On her 105th birthday, Sister Jean received a proclamation from President Joe Biden — who had sent her flowers on at least one previous occasion.

Biden’s message, in part, told Sister Jean, “You have shown us all that yours is a life well lived.”

The university said Sister Jean is survived by her sister-in-law, Jeanne Tidwell, and her niece, Jan Schmidt.

The crash was reported just before 2 a.m. on the 11000 block of West Vanowen Street near Lankershim Boulevard.

A passenger and the driver were reported to have been the two people who died after a silver car rammed into a power pole and parked cars. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to extricate victims from the vehicle.

Crews with the Department of Water and Power were on the scene fixing the powerlines that were hit.                

The driver was taken to the hospital to be treated, but later died.  

According to police, the man who died on Vanowen Street was a passenger in the back seat.

Two other men were in the car as well and are still in the hospital. 

Police say they are trying to figure out how the silver car rammed into the two parked cars on Vanowen Street and got onto the sidewalk and into that gate. It was not immediately clear why the driver crashed into the power pole.

Vanowen was shut down from Lankershim Boulevard to Beck Avenue as the investigation continues.

Anthony Castro owns the top-ranked restaurant at 6102 Vineland Ave., described as small and humble, with his mom and dad, Gema and José Castro.

“It’s surreal, it’s surreal,” Castro told NBCLA. “It’s one of those things that, I know my parents put a lot of work into it, myself too, and I just still can’t believe it, if I’m being honest.

“The Valley’s so, so big, and I mean, the U.S. is even… so, it’s really nice. That’s a big accomplishment.”

The three- to four-hour daily cooking process results in meat described by reviewers as “incredibly tender” and “packed with savory spices.”

“Our birria is a family tradition passed down from my grandmother, who learned it from her mother,” Castro told Yelp! “We make everything fresh on-site, from our tortillas to our drinks and salsas.”

None of the six people assessed at the scene appeared to have suffered critical injuries in the 6:40 a.m. crash at the intersection of Vineland Avenue and Vanowen Street, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.   

Five of the patients had non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals. One person declined transport.

A Metrolink train was stopped on nearby tracks as crews tended to the victims and a railroad crossing signal was down in traffic lanes.

“The Metrolink train which was stopped for safety reasons was allowed to slowly continue once the tracks were clear,” Stewart said.   

One of the vehicles required “a quick door pop” to free a person, she said.

Police said the person who lives at the apartment shot the man Friday morning when he tried to burglarize the home in the 12000 block of Oxnard Street, near Coldwater Canyon Avenue. The man was in his apartment at about 10 a.m. when he checked on a noise and confronted a man trying to break in through a window, police said.

After a struggle, the burglar entered the home and the resident grabbed a handgun. The burglar left the scene after he was shot in the chest.

Sources told NBC4 investigates police may have found the man they’re seeking after the suspected burglar turned up at a hospital.

The investigation that led to the operation at about 1:30 a.m. on Kling Street near Riverside Drive may be connected to a home invasion Thursday in Woodland Hills, LAPD sources said. NBCLA has reached out the LAPD for details.

Officers appeared to be focused on one house in the neighborhood. An officer could be heard telling someone to come out with their hands up.

At least one person was detained, but details about how the person was connected to the investigation were not immediately available.

SWAT members, a K9 team and other officers left the area before dawn.

On Thursday in Woodland Hills, officers responded to a call just before 5 a.m. of a hot prowl with at least one person inside the home, according to police. Victims told LAPD that five to seven men dressed in all black entered the home and left with some property.

No arrests were reported in that case.

Passengers called police at about 12:15 p.m. from near the intersection of Tujunga Avenue and Chandler Boulevard to report that someone on the bus was stabbed in the neck, LAPD sources told NBC4 Investigates. An argument escalated to violence on the bus, which was connecting Chatsworth and North Hollywood.

Witnesses said the attacker exited the bus after the stabbing and was immediately taken into custody. LAPD later identified the assailant as 23-year-old Logan Dunn.

In a statement, Metro said the passenger was stabbed by Dunn shortly after the bus left the North Hollywood station traveling west. Police said the suspect pulled out a 4-inch pocket knife and stabbed the victim three times in the neck.

Cellphone video shot by a bystander who lives across street from the bus stop that runs parallel Chandler and intersects Tujunga showed the LAPD detaining a man.

A witness who was on the same bus said the altercation started with an argument between two men then escalated to one of the men pulling out a knife and stabbing the other man in the neck.

“I ended up taking off my Dodgers jersey, sopping the blood (that) kept pouring everywhere,” Virginia Salas said. “Everybody was getting scared, running out of the bus.”

The victim was identified as 35-year-old Amirreza Jharakhani. It’s unclear what led up to the argument.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash on Lankershim Boulevard between Oxnard and Erwin streets.

Among the patients, two of them were in serious condition while five others were in fair shape. Their ages and genders were not immediately known. 

Only one of the injured people was taken to a hospital as six others refused to be taken to a hospital against medical advice, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Officials warned traffic in the area would be heavily impacted for “an extended period of time.”

Police received several 911 calls at about 9 a.m. Wednesday about a man hitting cars with a bat. The man also unsuccessfully tried to carjack someone, police told NBC4 Investigates.

Dozens of car windows smashed in North Hollywood

Police found the man nearby, still in possession of the bat, the LAPD said. After a short chase, police used a stun gun and took the man into custody.

He was transported to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries. Police said he will be booked on suspicion of felony attempted carjacking.

On Tuesday, another man caused thousands of dollars in damage to dozens of cars after smashing their windows in North Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was arrested for felony vandalism after damaging 29 cars.

The outdoor mall, which opened in 1951, has long been left to degrade with most of the buildings being vacant for years and encountering numerous problems, including fires, criminal activity and homeless encampments.  

“We’re hoping that if they’re forced to tear down these buildings, that they’ll seriously consider developing or selling it to someone who will develop the property because we would like to see something happen here so tearing it down that’s just the first step of many,” said Diann Corral, a North Hollywood resident.  

The Charles Company acquired most of the complex in 2015 but failed to develop the property after opening no businesses and letting the structures deteriorate. 

On Aug. 19, the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners will hear the city’s application to move forward with demolition and hold the owners accountable for more than a decade of neglect. In the past, the city has tried to get the owners to develop or sell the properties. 

“It’s their lack of commitment to the site that’s gotten to the place where it is today, that’s why we wanted it declared a public nuisance,” said Adrian Nazarian, LA City Council member. 

Fred Gaines, an attorney for the Charles Company, said that the firm applied for a demolition permit in September 2024, but cited the homeless encampment on the property as a barrier.  

“Until this homeless situation is resolved, no one is going to invest tens of millions of dollars into this site,” said Fred Gaines, attorney for the Charles Company.

When it first opened, Valley Plaza was the first outdoor mall in North Hollywood and once drew national attention, including a visit from President John F. Kennedy. Business declined in the 1970s, and the site was severely damaged during the1994 Northridge Earthquake.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., officers received calls about a man smashing the car windows of parked cars along Tujunga Avenue. When police arrived, witnesses pointed out the man they said was responsible.

He was arrested for felony vandalism after damaging 29 cars, LAPD said. 

Police said the man used a rock to break the windows of the vehicles. 

Although this was a zero-dollar bail crime, which does not require a monetary payment from individuals arrested for certain offenses, the LAPD said that due to the man’s prior record, a magistrate hearing was requested before the man goes to court or bail is imposed.

Law enforcement sources tell NBC4 Investigates that the man has had multiple arrests for vandalism in the past.

Anyone who had their car damaged was urged to call the LAPD North Hollywood division at 818-754-8300.

Richard Vitagliano is accused of attacking Harpal Singh on Aug. 4 with a golf club. Singh was on his daily walk near Sikh Gurdwara of LA on Lankershim Boulevard when he was beaten with the club.

After the attack, LAPD officers were told to be on the look out for the suspect, McDonnell said, as they received a picture of the man from surveillance cameras on Monday. Later that night, the alleged assailant was taken into custody on Lankershim Boulevard at Arminta Street in North Hollywood.

Vitagliano, a known unhoused person in the area, has an extensive criminal record related to drug, assault and weapons charges, McDonnell said.

The LAPD chief said, despite the victim being a member of the Sikh community, the attack was not a hate crime. 

“(It) was motivated by a dispute over property belonging to the victim,” McDonnell said. “The North Hollywood command will be conducting extra patrol in the area following the incident and will continue to engage the community to discuss public safety and address any other concerns.”

The Sikh Coalition, however, issued a statement questioning whether that determination can be made yet, since the suspect was only recently arrested and the victim is unable to be interviewed.

“I am grateful to hear that the police have arrested a suspect for the horrific assault of my brother, but we need to better understand this attack and why it is not being considered a hate crime,” Singh’s brother, Gurdial Singh Randhawa, said in a statement released by the coalition.

“Justice must be served, and our local Sikh community must know that the area around our gurdwara — where we gather to worship, learn, connect, eat, and serve others — is safe for all.”

The coalition stated: “Fundamentally, we do not believe this incident can be definitively declared not a hate crime after such a short investigation.”

Vitagliano remained at Van Nuys jail as of Tuesday after being booked for the charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Harpal Singh was attacked Aug. 4 by someone with a golf club. Singh was on his daily walk near Sikh Gurdwara of LA on Lankershim Boulevard when he was beaten with the club.

No arrests have been reported. A detailed description of the attacker was not available.

Singh remained in critical condition Monday, unable to communicate, according to speakers at Monday’s news conference and justice rally. Participants asked anyone with information about the attack to contact police.

“It pains me. We don’t know what has happened today. But when this happens, it absolutely rips fear throughout our community,” said Munmeeth Kaur, legal director of the Sikh Coalition.

Federal agents arrived in the parking lot of the store around 9:30 a.m. on Monday and placed several people in their custody. On footage taken by witnesses on their cellphones, agents are seen guiding at least one person through the store’s parking lot, then taking them into an unmarked vehicle.

In response to the raid, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) held a vigil outside the Home Depot for those detained. Organizers and community members denounced the operation – the latest in a string of raids directed by the Trump administration.

Monday’s operation comes as the legality of agents’ practices comes into question. Immigrant advocates have questioned agents’ failure to show warrants during raids on several occasions, their lack of transparency as to why certain businesses are targeted and some agents’ practice of concealing their identities during operations.

Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem slammed questions and accusations that suspected the Trump administration of racially profiling individuals during these operations.

“That has been another false narrative that has been put out there in the media that I absolutely want to throw back at you and say that is absolutely false,” she said at the time. “And don’t you dare ever say that again. We have judges out there and other individuals saying people have been targeted that way, and it’s not true.”

Other recent immigration enforcement operations at Home Depot stores were carried out in San Bernardino and Los Angeles’ Westlake area.

Through Aug. 1, nearly 56,600 migrants had been taken into ICE detention since the start of President Trump’s second term, according NBC News, which used ICE data both public and internal as well as data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

About 29% of those in detention had criminal convictions; 24.7% had pending criminal charges; 46.8% were listed as “other immigration violator;” and 11.9% were fast-tracked for deportation.

The crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. July 21 when a white pickup truck was heading southbound on Lankershim Boulevard and struck a bicyclist crossing the street south of Arminta Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities said the man was crossing outside of a crosswalk. 

The driver did not stop to identify themselves or offer help, continuing southbound on Lankershim Boulevard, police said.  

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the bicyclist to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was described as a 52-year-old white male. His name is being withheld pending family notification by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. 

Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the driver, under the city’s Hit-and-Run reward program. 

Police are reminding the public that drivers involved in a crash are required by law to stop, offer aid if necessary and remain at the scene until authorities arrive.

Hernandez died due to acute ethanol intoxication, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, 43, who had already been under investigation for two other alleged sexual assaults, was charged with murdering Hernandez.

Hernandez’s body was found in a ditch in Oxnard in April. His family had reported him missing on Sunday, March 30 after he didn’t return from a visit with the coach in the Lancaster/Palmdale area and didn’t answer calls.

Garcia-Aquino is also facing a separate charge stemming from an alleged sex assault against a 16-year-old boy in Palmdale on Feb. 22, 2024.

“Garcia Aquino befriended a Sylmar family who allowed their juvenile son to stay with him at his residence in Palmdale,” Luna said, adding the family soon filed a criminal report with the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

The case filed in April charged Garcia-Aquino with a single count of first-degree murder, with the special circumstance allegation that the murder happened during the commission of another violent felony, such as a robbery or rape.

Garcia-Aquino faces at least life without the possibility of parole on the murder charge along with six years in prison for the sex assault charge.

LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who announced his office is seeking the death penalty again , said he would consider seeking the capital punishment for Garcia-Aquino.

Both players won the World Series for the Dodgers and have an immense impact in the Latino communities of LA with Hernández, who is an active player with the team, winning two World Series, recently in 2024 and 2020 while Valenzuela only won the 1981 World Series. 

The mural is located at the corner of Lankershim and Burbank Boulevards on the side of the Noho Tires and Wheels building. 

In the mural, Hernandez is shown wearing a Dodgers hat, with a clenched fist while wearing his two World Series championship rings. 

Dodgers legend Valenzuela, who died in Oct. 2024 from an unspecified health problem, is pictured wearing a Dodgers hat and angel wings behind him. On either side of him are drawings of his time as a player, depicting him pitching in his iconic number 34 jersey.

His nickname “El Toro” is also noted below the pictures along with the images of two bulls.

The artist behind the mural has other works around LA, honoring iconic figures, including Kobe and Gianna Bryant, Nipsey Hussle, Selena Quintanilla and Kendrick Lamar.

The crash happened on Tuesday at around 5:10 a.m. at the Arco gas station on Roscoe Blvd and Laurel Canyon Blvd, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The video showed, when the dark-colored Hummer EV SUV entered the gas station, a man was lying between two parking stalls. When the suspect’s car proceeded, it ran over the man. 

Police said the driver fled northbound Pendleton Street from Roscoe Boulevard without rendering help.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics later pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect’s vehicle had three “cab lights” affixed to its roof. 

“Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” the LAPD wrote in a Friday release.

Anyone who may have witnessed or have information is asked to contact the Valley Traffic Division  at (818) 644-8119. A reward of up to $50,000 is available, according to the LAPD.

Cesar Daniel Cabrera, 24, assaulted the boy on March 22, 202, leaving the toddler with life-threatening injuries. 

“The level of violence inflicted on this defenseless child is nothing short of monstrous,” District Attorney Hochman said. “This office will continue to pursue maximum accountability for those who harm children.”

Cabrera had pleaded no contest to one felony count of child abuse. 

In addition to receiving the high term of 12 years in state prison, the man was ordered to pay full restitution to the victim.

Cabrera also pleaded no contest to two separate cases of second-degree burglary, adding eight months to his sentence, the DA’s office said.
