According to police, a group of about 20 people entered the Superior grocery store after smashing a window.

Video footage shows merchandise and food items thrown across the floor of the store. Shelves were ransacked and many of the store’s alcohol bottles were taken.

Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department said it all began between 4:30 and 5 a.m. when over 50 vehicles shut down the intersection for a street takeover on Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street.

Three employees who were inside the store at the time of the incident called police to report a burglary.

The employees then hid on the second floor of the building while the group of men and women stole merchandise and ran off.

No injuries were reported. At the moment, one person is in custody.

Cleanup efforts and the investigation continue.

Destination Crewnshaw is a 1.3-mile long outdoor museum along the Crenshaw corridor, celebrating the art and culture of Black Los Angeles, including parks and outdoor art installations.

“The idea was, we have great art, we have great culture here in California and in LA, in the Black community, we want to put that on the streets so everyone can see,” Destination Crewnshaw leader and Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson said.

The project broke ground in 2020, and organizers said portions were set to open by 2023. But three years later, the construction is still ongoing.

“It’s been frustrating seeing people’s lives impacted, seeing businesses impacted,” Pastor Kyron Shorter at Bethesda Temple Church said.

Last month, some neighbors held a community meeting, saying the construction was blocking access to street parking and parking lots, tearing up sidewalks and hurting local businesses.

“It’s unacceptable,” radio host Tavis Smiley said. “Businesses have gone under, waiting for this project to finish. Others are teetering on bankruptcy.”

An NBC Los Angeles crew on Wednesday went to the site with Harris-Dawson, who led the effort to create the project, for an update on the community’s concerns.

“We’ve responded pretty aggressively because folks are right,” Harris-Dawson said.

Harris-Dawson said delays have been caused by the rising cost of construction since the pandemic, which has sent the price tag for Destination Crenshaw from $95 million to more than $150 million.

“I know how much work there is left, but you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Harris-Dawson said when asked when the project would be completed. “So we fully expect that we can finish it within the next calendar year, but again, given how long it has taken and how many delays there’s been and weather events there have been, I’m real reluctant to tell people, ‘OK, it will absolutely be done on this day.'”

Project leaders say since the community meeting last month, they’ve been able to get permission from the city to remove the K rail that was blocking access on the street in the corridor. Many of the planned artworks are also finished, such as Terrick Gutierrez’s mural on the front of Dulan’s Soul Food restaurant.

“Being able to have my artwork out in the public for folks to be able to experience it and see themselves in this mural is really important, especially in this neighborhood,” Gutierrez said.

Rosemary Williams, owner of Dog Lovers pet groomers, said the project’s mural has transformed the look of her store and that organizers have also helped her sublet part of her building for extra income.

“It helps quite a bit because I would have to do it all alone,” Williams said.

Organizers say they believe Destination Crenshaw will be a lasting source of positivity after years of strain on businesses in the area.

“This project is really what closes that chapter and starts a new future for the people that live in this area, and to cement it in culture and public art,” Destination Crenshaw president and CEO Jason Foster said.

NBCLA reached out to some of the community members who shared concerns about the project for a response to the action that organizers have taken in the last month but is waiting to hear back

The hourlong Los Angeles Police Department pursuit began around 5:45 p.m. near Dodger Stadium and continued on surface streets to the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood of South LA. During the pursuit, about six LAPD vehicles were seen behind the rider, described as a man in his early 20s. A police helicopter was also overhead.

Aerial footage from NewsChopper4 captured several dangerous moments of the pursuit, including the rider traveling on the wrong side of the road and appearing to clip a car’s side mirror. In the Willowbrook area, he cut through Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park and Athens Park, one of which was filled with young football players practicing.

At around 6:20 p.m., the rider attempted to refuel at a gas station on Alameda Street in Huntington Park but quickly took off with part of the pump hose still attached as LAPD officers approached.

The rider eventually ran out of gas on 111th Street, where he abandoned his bike, which had previously been reported stolen, and was seen running through several backyards before hiding out in a blue recycling bin. As officers pulled up, the man got out of the bin and was arrested near 112th Street and Broadway around 6:45 p.m.

He is expected to face felony evading and felony possession of a stolen vehicle charges, according to the LAPD.

Police say there are no known injuries.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department were in pursuit of a reckless driver in a silver Toyota Corolla shortly before 1 a.m.

LAPD said the driver was headed eastbound on Imperial Highway when he lost control and collided with several parked cars on Wadsworth Avenue.

The pursuit driver was injured and transported to a local hospital with a broken nose, LAPD said.

No further details were immediately available.

The LAPD tells NBC 4 that the man was crossing the street using a walker around 9:20 p.m. at South Vermont Avenue and West 83rd Street in a marked crosswalk when the crash occurred, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman.

The driver of the car did not stop and fled the scene.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim was rushed to a hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead, the spokeswoman said. His name was not released pending family notification.

Video from the scene showed officers investigating the crash and the crumpled remains of a wheelchair or wheeled walker next to a curb.

A description of the vehicle was not immediately available.

Lira was propelled forward into parked vehicles before he fell onto the street. The driver ran over Lara and left the scene, police said.

“He was obeying the rules of the road when he was struck from behind,” said LAPD Capt. Tiffany Ayers.

Video and images of the vehicle sought in the investigation were released Tuesday morning at a news conference with the victim’s family. A reward of $50,000 was announced for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the hit-and-run driver.

Investigators said the driver in an older model black Cadillac CTS appeared to run over the victim multiple times when Lira was on the ground.

“Christian was doing absolutely the right thing,” said LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno. “He was farthest over to the right, basically the bike lane, when he was struck from behind by a speeding vehicle that, from what we gathered in the videos, was trying to pass a car in the No. 1 lane.

“After the collision, poor Christian was trapped beneath the vehicle, and the vehicle actually went in reverse, running him over a second time, and the proceeding forward, running over him, basically, a third time.”

Lira’s cause of death was blunt traumatic injuries, according to the medical examiner.

Family members at the Tuesday news conference urged anyone with information about the driver or car to contact authorities.

“He’s truly missed,” said sister Michelle Montejano. “We had lots of good memories. We wish we would have had a lot more.”

The driver left the scene heading south. Moreno said detectives believe the driver is from the area, based on video of the vehicle after the crash.

The car had distinctive rims and an aftermarket hood scoop, Moreno said.

Forty-nine traffic fatalities have been reported this year in the LAPD’s South Traffic Division, most of which were attributed to excessive speed, Moreno said.

“Mistakes happen sometimes, accidents happen, and sometimes it’s just reckless,” Moreno said. “We always tell everybody if you end up in this moment, stop and call for help.”

Investigators determined that Elijah was mistakenly identified by the shooter as a gang member when he was shot and killed in the 13100 block of Jarvis Avenue in the city of Los Angeles. No arrests have been reported, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Monday asked for help to find the shooter and released security camera video of a car sought in connection with the Feb. 28, 2025 killing.

“He was just a kid. He had his whole life ahead of him,” sister Zekiah said Monday, fighting back tears. “He was not just a name in a news story. He was my brother. Now, we have to wake up every day knowing that he isn’t coming home. Elijah deserved to grow up. He deserved to graduate, make memories. He deserved better.”

Elijah was hanging out with friends and sitting in a vehicle on a Friday night in a South Los Angeles neighborhood when a vehicle approached on Jarvis Avenue. Someone inside the car opened fire at Elijah and a friend.

Elijah died at a hospital.

The friend, a 15-year-old boy, was not injured.

“I stand before you not only as a grieving mother, but as the voice of my son,” said mother Mercedes Roberson. “Before anyone remembers how he died, I want them to remember how he lived. He mattered.

“There isn’t a single day that goes by that I don’t think about Elijah. It follows me every morning when I wake but and every night before I go to bed.”

Video displayed at the Monday news conference showed the vehicle sought in connection with the shooting, investigators said. The video shows the vehicle at about midnight Feb. 28, 2025, shortly after the shooting.

The driver of the black sedan left the shooting scene heading north on Main Street and never went past 108th Street and Main Street.

“We strongly believe the suspects live in that general area,” said sheriff’s Lt. Steve DeJong. “Elijah Davenport’s life came to a tragic end that evening. We know there are people with information about Elijah’s murder.”

Officers responded to a call about shots fired near Crenshaw Boulevard and West 59th Street at 3:15 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When they arrived, they say they found a 50-year-old man dead at the scene.

Skipp Townsend is a former gang member and co-founder of the nonprofit organization 2nd Call, which is dedicated to saving lives and promoting peace on the streets of LA. He identified the victim to NBC Los Angeles as Reginald Foreman.

Townsend said Foreman and his fellow 2nd Call ambassadors were working together to clean up the neighborhood by picking up trash and weeding the grass when Foreman was gunned down for no apparent reason.

The shooter ran away and was described by the LAPD as an approximately 20-year-old man. As of 10 p.m., no one has been taken into custody.

Details about what prompted the shooting were unknown.

Like others in the organization, Foreman turned his life around with the goal of getting others to do the same, according to Townsend.

“It’s sad for not only 2nd Call, but it’s sad for his family … It’s sad for the community,” Townsend said.

The deadly shooting comes a little over a month after a former 2nd Call activist was killed. Eric Washington was fatally shot over the Fourth of July weekend in Compton.

Townsend said he will gather the 2nd Call family together on Friday and begin the healing process, understanding some may be apprehensive about climbing into one of their marked vans and going back out onto the streets.

But he says nothing will stop the 2nd Call mission.

Destination Crenshaw — an effort led by Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson — was originally supposed to open three years ago. According to the project’s website, it was designed to be an open-air museum and 1.3-mile-long corridor along Crenshaw Boulevard to honor the history of the Black community in LA.

The plans also included an outdoor park, which was initially expected to open in 2023. But three years later, the park is still blocked off, and the Destination Crenshaw corridor remains an ongoing construction site.

People who live and work in the area say the construction has been blocking access to their street parking and parking lots all this time, affecting local business and churches and becoming a yearslong blight on their community.

“It’s unacceptable,” Tavis Smiley with KBLA Talk 1580 said. “Businesses have gone under waiting for this project to finish. Others are teetering on bankruptcy and insolvency.”

A community meeting took place Thursday outside Bethesda Temple Church, where the pastor says attendance is way down on Sundays over the last three years as barriers for an inactive construction site have taken up nearly all of their street parking.

“It’s been devastating,” Pastor Shorter at Bethesda Temple Church said. “You need to come meet with us. We’re pushing for accountability.”

During Thursday’s meeting, people in the neighborhood shared their frustrations with what they say is the lack of progress with Destination Crenshaw.

Dr. John Hardy says the parking lot at his veterinary practice on Crenshaw Boulevard has been blocked off since 2021.

“This impact appears to be going way too long,” Hardy said. “Something needs to be done. It has to be concluded, and we also have to have some type of compensation.”

NBC Los Angeles reached out to Harris-Dawson’s office for a response to the concerns and an updated timeline of when the project is expected to be finished. The council president said the following in a statement:

“The concerns of businesses and residents in the Crenshaw District are critical, and my office will work with Destination Crenshaw to address them. This project started with several community meetings and community input, and to be successful, we need our neighbors to know and feel that this project is for them and to build a prosperous future.”

The chase began at about 3:40 p.m. and lasted only about 30 seconds before the crash, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Aerial footage from NewsChopper4 showed the eastbound 105 was shut down and traffic was backed up for miles, all the way to Los Angeles International Airport.

About 20-30 Los Angeles Police Department officers were seen surrounding the car, which was overturned against the center divider, with the driver’s side down. A tow truck was brought in, and once the car was upright, officers approached the driver’s side and took the suspect out of the vehicle and into custody.

A Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance then transported the suspect to the hospital. It’s unclear what injuries the suspect sustained in the crash.

The freeway fully reopened around 5:30 p.m., but the delays continued throughout the evening. Drivers who wanted to avoid the 105 could take Imperial Highway, Rosecrans Avenue or the 91 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol was also assisting.

Officers responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon suspect near Normandie Avenue and Washington Boulevard just before 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Capt. Mike Bland told NBC Los Angeles that preliminary information indicates officers found the suspect under the Interstate 10 overpass, and that’s when the shooting occurred. Details about what prompted the shooting were unknown.

The man was struck by gunfire and was taken to the hospital, where he died, Bland said. His identity was not yet not released.

No officers or community members were injured, according to the department.

The investigation is ongoing.

The incident happened in the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood at around 3:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When officers arrived, they found Maria Barrios Ventura had been shot in her bedroom.

Investigators say shots were fired, and they ended up going through the window, striking and killing the young woman. It’s unclear how many shooters were involved.

She died at the scene, police said.

Her boyfriend, Omar Misael, told NBC Los Angeles she leaves behind a 1-year-old baby. He said the family was sleeping together in the same bed when the shooting took place.

“A stray bullet passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here. She died about 10 minutes later,” Misael said.

The grieving father said he’s in disbelief that his other half would die being struck by a bullet in bed. He said he ran outside to ask for help and tried rendering aid to Ventura before medical personnel arrived. Police said the victim was struck in the head.

Jose Chavez said the bullets struck his property, as well.

“It hit my car, it hit the window, it hit a friend,” he said. “And unfortunately, she died.”

Ventura is remembered as being a loving and devoted mother.

The investigation is ongoing. A description of the gunman or gunmen was not immediately available.

NBC Los Angeles first reported Thursday that toxicology testing is underway for the twin toddlers, Atlas and Sebastian Carbajal, after the 1-year-olds were found dead at the home on South Victoria Avenue near Crenshaw Boulevard on Monday.

The boys’ deaths are being probed as a possible drug overdose, law enforcement sources told NBCLA. Multiple sources said they believe fentanyl may have been involved.

However, the toddlers’ aunt said the family is struggling to understand their death while calling her nephews “sweet, innocent babies.”

“There’s no fentanyl in the house,” the relative, who declined to be identified, said. “We’re clueless. Just like everybody else, we don’t know. But I know there’s no drugs. no nothing here. Nothing.”

The relative explained the twins’ mother is feeling “infinite pain” and hurting as friends and family are coming together to console one another.

“We’re going to take it day by day,” she said.

LAPD detectives interviewed the twins’ family members and released them for further investigation, the department said.

The autopsies on the boys were complete, but their release is postponed until toxicology reports are available, allowing the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine a cause and manner.

The South LA resident said the city hasn’t been much help. According to Flores, city crews would pick up the trash and clean out the alley, only for the encampment to return within a day or two.

“(The homeless) either brings everything back in there or it looks the same within a few days,” Flores said.

The homeless encampment may be also impacting children as a middle school stands across the street from the alley.

Another neighbor, who identified herself as Sheyla, said when she walks by the alley with her children almost everyday, she often witnesses some people “doing crazy stuff.”

“They need to clean these streets up for us and for everybody,” Sheyla said.

Businesses in the area have to worry about vandalism, in addition to trash the homeless leave behind in front of their buildings, according to Jose Meza, a business owner.

“I have to check my cameras over here two times a week because they break the cameras,” Mesa said.

The office of Councilmember Curren Price, who represents the area, said it was not aware of the issue. A representative from Price’s team told NBCLA in a statement that the office never received complaints directly from community members.

The council office added that it’s planning a comprehensive cleanup by Monday, July 20 while urging community members who experience similar issues to call 311 or directly contact their council office.

The stabbing happened near the intersection of Adams Boulevard and Flower Street near the University of Southern California at around 10:15 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Two of the people stabbed were taken to the hospital and are stable, while the two others were treated and released at the scene, the LAPD said.

Police said early Saturday that they are not looking for any other people in connection with the stabbing.

This incident is not believed to be related to the deadly stabbing that happened in the same area last Sunday night, according to the police department.

The investigation is ongoing.

The crash was reported in the 3300 block of West 78th Street in the South LA neighborhood. The driver of a Toyota Camry made an illegal left turn when the car was struck by a black BMW, police said.

Two men inside the Camry died at the scene. The passenger’s father told NBC Los Angeles his son was on his way to Los Angeles International Airport, flying to Chicago to meet his newborn baby.

The driver’s child, who was in the backseat, was transported to a hospital. Details about the child’s age and condition were not immediately available.

The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries.

Detectives say they do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, but they say the driver of the BMW’s speed may have played a role, as well as the Camry’s illegal left turn.

Arnulfo Hernandez, 77, was selling tamales with his wife on Maple Street when the crash happened on June 20 — an incident that his family says changed their lives in a matter of moments.

“He had multiple fractures,” his grandson, Osvaldo Hernandez, told NBC Los Angeles. “He broke his hip on both sides, the left and the right. He had to get a hip replacement surgery. He had fractures in his foot. He had a surgery for that as well.”

Osvaldo Hernandez said his grandparents sold tamales on that corner for 20 years and were able to support themselves running that business.

“He has to learn how to walk again,” he said. “That might take three or four months.”

Video of the aftermath shows the driver of the car who hit him.

“From what we know, the driver was on her phone. I guess she got stuck on her phone,” the grandson said. “She started swerving to the opposite lane. She hit a car, and she kept driving straight, straight into the curb, and that’s where she hit my grandpa and another man.”

The Los Angeles Police Department was not able to confirm what caused the accident.

Arnulfo Hernandez’s family is now turning to donations to help with the mounting medical costs.

“It’s sad to see him like that, but I hope he does come back fine and able to walk again, and our family could go back to just kind of having a peaceful life,” Osvaldo Hernandez said.

He says vendors like his grandparents are often near busy streets. After this incident, he worries about all street vendors and urges drivers to pay attention.

“Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes on the road. Just be alert. Be aware,” he said.

The arrests were part of what’s being called Operation Broken Blade, an ongoing takedown of alleged trafficking on the 3.5-mile stretch of Figueroa Street from Gage Avenue south to Imperial Highway, which is known as a haven for commercial sex workers and customers.

Officials say gang members and associates largely control sex trafficking and prostitution along the corridor, acting as pimps by managing and monitoring victims as young as 14 years old, pooling resources to rent motel rooms, and disciplining each other’s victims.   

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said women and girls are often recruited via social media or in person, and pimps focus on vulnerable minors, particularly those with financial or emotional struggles or who had run away from home or the foster care system.

Pimps are also known to have plied victims with drugs, including oxycodone and methamphetamine, while recruiting females via false promises of a luxurious lifestyle, intimidation, and actual or threatened violence, according to court papers.

In September 2024, federal, county and city officials in Los Angeles announced the Figueroa Human Trafficking Initiative, a partnership aimed at disrupting human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of minors in the
corridor.   

“We promised results and today we’re here to show them,” McDonnell told reporters at a Wednesday morning news conference in downtown Los Angeles.   

According to a 65-count updated indictment filed in Los Angeles federal court and unsealed Wednesday, 51 victims have been identified so far.   

“Sex trafficking of young women and children ranks among the worst criminal offenses our office prosecutes — truly the lowest of the low,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement.   

Among seven new defendants, federal prosecutors said, is Mukeshkumar Rambhai Ahir, 45, of South Los Angeles, manager of the Stadium Inn motel. Ahir is charged with financially benefiting from sex trafficking, allegedly having deposited $64,581 in proceeds he knew derived from a street gang’s sex trafficking of children and adults along the street known as “Fig,” Essayli said.

According to the indictment, which names 18 defendants, some members of the gang produced rap music and videos, which often glorified the gang, sex trafficking, drug sales and firearms possession.

Members also allegedly posted videos and photographs of their assaults on others to social media, in order to intimidate their victims and ensure compliance, Essayli said.

Convictions for sex trafficking offenses carry harsher sentences under federal law than state law, federal prosecutors said. If convicted, some defendants in the case would potentially face sentences of 15 years to life imprisonment, according to Essayli.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the Florence-Firestone area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officials say the toddler’s mother was speeding while trying to get through the light at an intersection when she crashed with the other car. They were both taken to the hospital, the LAPD said.

Inside the other car was a woman and her two children, according to the police department. The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and her children were not injured.

Elias Abdul Shabazz, 34, convinced a victim they were involved in a romantic relationship and later turned physically violent, federal prosecutors argued during a five-day trial.

“The defendant manipulated and terrorized the victim for his own gain, using violence, intimidation, and control,” Eddy Wang, one of the investigator in the case, said. “We commend the victim’s bravery for sharing her story.”

The victim testified against Shabazz in court, sharing with jurors the threats Shabazz made against her, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Shabazz, who previously lived in Perris, is also accused of hitting the victim with his weapon and threatened her by firing the gun at her feet.

Prosecutors added the man introduced her to drugs in a way to control “every aspect of her life.”

“Sex trafficking matters rank among the most tragic cases our office prosecutes,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli. “This defendant will now face many years in a federal prison cell for his sick, disgusting, and disturbing behavior.”

After being found guilty on one count of coercing or enticing interstate transportation for purposes of prostitution, Shabazz faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum of a life in prison, according to the DOJ.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6.

Investigators said Martin Moreno-Pacheco was taken into custody at approximately 3:40 a.m. following an investigation into a series of car-to-car shootings reported over the past week.

According to the CHP, the investigation began May 26 when a victim reported a shooting that occurred on May 23 on the 405 Freeway near Wilmington Avenue, which resulted in damage to the victim’s vehicle. The suspect vehicle was described as a black pickup truck.

On May 28, authorities received reports of another car-to-car shooting on the 405 Freeway south of Vermont Avenue. The victim’s vehicle was also damaged in that incident, and the suspect vehicle matched the description provided in the earlier shooting.

During the investigation, CHP detectives determined that both shooting incidents were connected to a shooting that occurred May 22. Investigators concluded all three shootings were allegedly committed by the same individual.

Moreno-Pacheco was later identified as the suspect and was located while driving the vehicle of interest. Officers conducted a traffic stop and found a loaded BB gun inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle, according to CHP.

No injuries were reported in any of the three incidents.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shootings or believes they may have been a victim in a related incident to call the CHP South Los Angeles Area office at (424) 551-4000. 

Officers responded to the home at about 6:30 a.m. in the 100 block of East 85th Street, a few blocks east of the 110 Freeway, to serve a search warrant in a domestic violence investigation. When officers entered the home, they found what was described as an undetermined amount of illegal fireworks.

Law enforcement sources told NBC4 Investigates that the fireworks are being described as retail consumer use, typically small explosive devices sold to the public. Authorities did not have an estimated on how many fireworks were in the home, but said about five box trucks had been loaded by early afternoon with boxes of fireworks.

The LAPD says the value of the illegal fireworks may be up to $200,000.

East 85th Street was shut down between Main and San Pedro streets. Evacuated residents were allowed to return home.

One person was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was arrested in connection with the fireworks discovery.

In California, only so-called “Safe and Sane” consumer-grade fireworks are legal, but county and local municipalities have different rules.

In Los Angeles, all fireworks, including so-called “Safe and Sane,” are illegal. It is illegal to store, manufacture, sell, use, or handle all forms of fireworks without a valid permit in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

In June 2021, a South Los Angeles neighborhood was shaken when a LAPD bomb squad attempted to detonate a large cache of illegal fireworks. Seventeen people were injured, including some of those officers, and the truck used to contain the fireworks was destroyed, sending debris flying.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, at around 3 a.m. officers spotted the suspect who was sought in connection with the kidnapping of an adult woman that took place over the weekend. 

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a pursuit that ended at the 900 block of West 85th Street in South LA. 

At the end of the pursuit, at least one shot was fired by an officer but no injuries were reported and no officers were hurt. The kidnapping suspect was taken into custody. 

According to Santa Monica Police, the kidnapping victim was not present during the pursuit or the shooting. 

The relationship between the suspect and the victim is not yet known but police have been in contact with the victim. 

The investigation is ongoing.

The shooting was reported just before 2 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Holmes and Slauson Avenues, the Los Angeles Police Department said. A man walked toward a vehicle and an argument began, which then escalated to the man being shot.

First responders performed life-saving measures on the man but he ultimately died of his injuries at the scene. The gunman took off in a vehicle.

The family of the man who was killed identified him as 30-year-old Dashawn Coleman.

“We don’t know nothing. All we know is we need justice,” Coleman’s brother Brett Balley told Telemundo 52. “He was a good person, a loving person. He took care of everybody.”

Video shows several bullet holes in a fence near the stand. Jordan Guzman, a man who was working at the taco stand Saturday night, told NBCLA he heard about seven to eight gunshots.

“We heard some people yelling — yelling bad words. They started fighting,” Guzman said, later adding, “I hear like seven gunshots, and that scares me. I didn’t move. I was just frozen, no nerves. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know to run or to stay.”

A detailed description of the suspect or the vehicle they took off in was not immediately available. That individual remains outstanding.

It’s unclear what caused the argument.

The accident on Vermont Avenue and 97th Street in the Westmont area, just three blocks from Juan Manuel Sanchez Salas’ home, was the last thing the family could have expected to happen.

“I did not know that he had just left home. He had came to eat. He left home going, heading towards Vermont,” his cousin, Maria Sanchez, told NBCLA.

Juan Manuel Sanchez Salas moved to LA from Mexico less than a year ago to live with his father and study English. His cousins say he was a happy and very responsible man.

“He was pretty cool. I know he was a really hardworking guy,” Maria Sanchez said. “He would just go to school, to the gym. From there, he would come home and go to work again. He used to cut hair as well.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, a driver in a Suburban was speeding, headed south on Vermont Avenue around 2 p.m. Tuesday, when they slammed into a traffic pole and an Audi and then flipped over and smashed into several other cars, including Juan Manuel Sanchez Salas’. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother and two other siblings still live in Mexico, while his father is now in the U.S. all alone.

“It sucks that he’s gone because he had so many ambitious goals, and he couldn’t accomplish most of them,” Maria Sanchez said. “We really want justice for what happened because it wouldn’t be fair to just let it be, and nothing is done.”

CHP investigators say the driver who caused the accident is in his 70s and may have been experiencing a medical emergency. He and his passenger are still in the hospital in critical condition.

The deadly incident happened just before 2 p.m., according to the LA County Fire Department in the area of Vermont and Colden avenues.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Suburban speeding southbound on Vermont clipped a car and likely went airborne, flipping and smashing into several other cars before landing on its roof in the center median.

Among the three injured, two were taken to a hospital in critical condition. The identity of the deceased person was not immediately available.

One woman who was in the area said she was stopped at a red light when she heard the deafening crash.

“I looked in my rear-view mirror, I seen a truck, a van, flipping in the air at least three or four times,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified. “That already hit a couple of cars but as it was coming down, I had to get out from underneath the truck. Nothing but God.”

Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, CHP said speed was likely a factor.

Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy is appealing the denial of its charter to the county in hopes of getting the title back. Charters are renewed every five years but back in March, the Los Angeles Unified School District board voted to deny the renewal of its charter since it was performing lower compared to neighboring schools.

Locke Academy serves about 1,000 students and has been run by Green Dot Public Schools. According to data provided by the school, graduation rates have increased since the organization took over.

In 2008, before the organization stepped in for Locke Academy, the school’s graduation rate was at 43%. That rate increased to 72% in 2025, according to the data.

“When I think about the families and the trust and belief that they have in this institution, I don’t really want that to be lost,” said Michael McElveen, who works for Green Dot Public Schools.

McElveen graduated from Locke College Preparatory Academy and credits his own success and the positive changes on campus to Green Dot. 

“It really transformed it,” he said of the organization. “Not just for students like me, who are already on the path, but for students that had no way. It gave them the light, it gave them a path and it gave them an opportunity to be successful.”

With the school’s charter title at risk, the Los Angeles County Board of Education will make its decision on the matter next month, according to Green Dot.

Some of the businesses at the shopping center were evacuated after a man, reported to be between 30-40 years old, was said to be holding a sharp object.

Police responded to the call at around 7:30 a.m. at the 5800 block of Vermont Avenue.

Augustus Hawkins High School is adjacent to the shopping center, but it was not immediately clear if the school was on lockdown.

Authorities later took the man into custody.

The shooting was reported just before 2 a.m. on the 1600 block of Firestone Boulevard, LASD said. There, one person was killed at the scene. Two other people, who were not shot, were hospitalized for unspecified injuries. The severity of their injuries is unclear.

Details on what led up to the shooting remain under investigation.

LASD did not say if a gunman is outstanding. The department did not release the name of the victim.

One person, identified as the person sought in connection with the report, was injured in the shooting near 76th Street and Normandie Avenue. Details about that person’s condition were not immediately available. The preliminary investigation indicated the man was armed with a knife.

There were no reports of injuries to officers.

Authorities say the car, described as a blue sedan from the 2000s — possibly a Dodge Caliber — may have been involved in the shooting that took place near 132nd Street and Jarvis Avenue at around 8 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2025. A total of seven people were shot, and two of them died, according to the sheriff’s department.

While people online were quick to accuse him of hoarding the giveaway items and even claiming he was a reseller, Jose Alvarez was actually doing something kind for his students.

Alvarez, who’s been an educator for three decades at John Muir Middle School, said his passion lies in inspiring his students to dream big. As someone who was born and raised in the very community where he now has his career, Alvarez said he does what he can to motivate his students to succeed.

“Like I tell the students, I said, ‘When you do good in school, you do good academically. You get rewarded,’” he said.

Over the years, Alvarez has taken his top students to a Dodger game. For many, it’s a dream come true and even their first Major League Baseball game.

Things were different this year, however, due to the threat of a strike within the Los Angeles Unified School District. With that, the field trip to the Dodger game was canceled for the 35 students who were slated to go. However, Alvarez was determined to secure the giveaway item from his class’s scheduled game to ensure students at least got a keepsake from it.

“They allowed me to come in, so they said, ‘You can only come in five at a time,’” the teacher said. “So, I went in, got to put them in a bag.”

“So, I’m walking with this big, heavy bag,” Alvarez said. “Looked like Santa Claus walking down.”

That’s when someone spotted Alvarez and, without his knowledge or consent, recorded a video of him and posted it online, accusing him of taking extra sweatshirts to make a profit.

“All of a sudden, first period, I get it — one of my colleagues sends me a text, and I said, he says, ‘Look, Mr. Alvarez, what they’re posting,’” he said.

Alvarez said he was hurt by the accusations when he was just trying to do a good deed for his young students.

“I had to hold my composure,” he said. “I didn’t reply, just kept quiet.”

Eventually, Alvarez’s name was cleared and the person who posted the video learned of his good deed. After learning what Alvarez was really doing with the sweatshirts, the online user made another video admitting that he was wrong.

“I’m saying just moving forward, I wish more people on social media would just think twice before they post stuff,” Alvarez said. “Sometimes it could lead to somebody getting hurt, you know?”

The teacher said he organizes the Dodger trips for his students to make them smile, similarly to what his father did for him.

“My dad passed away three years ago. He was a huge Dodger fan,” Alvarez said. He went on to recall the happiness he felt in going to games with his late father.

“So, for me, just to have students experience that game was really, really, I mean, I’ve been doing this for a long year,” Alvarez said. “Just the happiness on their face.”

Ronald Palmer said the pain of losing his son was unbearable.

“It feels like yesterday,” Palmer said. “I used to cry a lot, but I don’t cry anymore.”

On May 28, 1995, Ronnie Palmer Jr. was heading home on his bike near West Boulevard and 58th Place in South Los Angeles when Los Angeles Police Department detectives say someone fired multiple rounds.

“There were three murders on this block in that year, which speaks to the level of violence in that year,” LAPD Robbery-Homicide cold case Detective Ricardo Feria said.

Feria said the neighborhood has drastically changed over the 30-plus years. There were no surveillance cameras in the area in 1995, and witnesses who came forward back then are long gone. His hope is that the murder would have stuck with someone’s memory, willing to come forward now.

“We all was heartbroken,” Palmer said.

The family had just recently moved into the neighborhood, according to Palmer. After Ronnie was killed, they quickly moved out of Los Angeles altogether.

“I pray every day, even at church, that they’ll catch him one day,” Palmer said.

With all the time that’s passed, he says he knows it’s possible no one will face justice in this life. Yet the case remains open for the LAPD and Feria — seeking justice to the end.

The governor’s office announced the $50,000 rewards will be shared with law enforcement agencies including those in LA and Orange County to help solve over two dozen cold cases.

One of the teens was 3-year-old Iran Moreno. He killed on Nov. 20, 2021 in Pasadena when a stray bullet went through the walls and struck him. When he was shot, the boy was playing video games in his bedroom at his home on North Raymond Avenue.

The Pasadena Police Department had said investigators were looking for a gray Ford Fusion that spotted in a parking lot across the street from the boy’s home. The front passenger of the vehicle exited and fired two gunshots in an easternly direction, police said.

A $85,000 reward was offered to catch the shooter, but the case went cold.

Another LA County cold case that’s receiving more funding is the shooting death of 16-year-old Tioni Theus. Her body was found along the 110 Freeway near Manchester Avenue in South LA in January 2022. She was last seen Jan. 7 , 2022 after telling a family member she was going to meet a friend and go to a party, officials said.

The state, LA County, LA city governments each offered reward to catch the girl’s killer, but the efforts were not successful.

“Every family deserves answers and justice,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “These rewards send a message that every case matters, every victim matters, and that we are all working toward increased accountability. If you know something, it is your duty to come forward.”

Two cold cases in Orange County were also receiving financial support: the stabbing death of Alan Schwalbe, 61, from 1993 near Costa Mesa and the fatal drive-by shooting of a 18-year-old woman in Santa Ana.

The massive sculpted figures along with towering pillars and echoing Egyptian monuments were created by Lauren Halsey, an artist born in South LA’s Gramercy Park.

Halsey said the monuments are dedicated to the people in the neighborhood.

Her creation is on display in an outdoor sculpture park called Sister Dreamer, which honors Halsey’s local heroes, neighbors and family. One artwork even features the face of her mother.

“So many of our genius gets overlooked, in my opinion, gets devalued, don’t get their flowers,” Halsey said.

Alongside blooming flowers and native plants and water fountains, Halsey literally has put the people on pedestals.

“That’s Robin, one of the founders of the Sisters of Watts,” Halsey while discussing the creation dedicated to the grassroots community nonprofit.

Kara Gomez, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than seven decades, said the sculptures not only capture what she remembers but gives her hope for the future.

“It’s beautiful. It’s really amazing. It’s history,” Gomez said. “This, I think, it a lot of people come and see it will give them pride on what we have accomplished and what we can accomplish.”

The park will also host live events for the neighborhood with a focus on youth. In fact, the community will be trying to break the world record for the longest soul train dance line on Juneteenth this year.

Everyone is invited, Halsey said.

As the man and his car were found near the Vermont exit just before 2 p.m., all eastbound lanes except for the #5 lane were closed for hours, backing up traffic for miles during the evening commute. The lanes were back open at 8:30 p.m., CHP said.

Images from NewsChopper4 showed the right-side rear window of the dark colored sedan was shattered.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

CHP officials said the case was being investigated as possible highway violence.

It was not immediately clear who shot the man or how the man ended up with the gunshot wounds. The CHP did not have a suspect description as of Thursday afternoon.

Chef, baker, restaurateur, author, La Brea Bakery founder, and Mozza Restaurant Group co-owner Nancy Silverton earned the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award for her more than four decades in the culinary industry.

Silverton won the first-ever James Beard Award for Pastry Chef of the Year in 1991 and the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef in 2014. The James Beard Foundation credits her for helping “spark the modern bread movement” and, through her cookbooks, shaping “public understanding of food, craft, and tradition, reinforcing the cultural and emotional significance of food in American life.”

Video showed the woman facedown on a section of slanted rooftop with a tenuous hold on an edge. Firefighters responded at about 2 a.m. to the scene near West 43rd Street and Broadway, where there were reports of people trapped and smoke coming from the second floor of the fourplex.

Firefighters raised a ladder to the woman on the roof and helped her down.

One person was hospitalized, but details about that person’s condition were not immediately available.

The crash was reported just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when the victim was traveling northbound on Slauson Avenue from Denver Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. There, a driver struck the woman and took off.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died of her injuries. LAPD said it’s not releasing the victim’s name at this time, but described her as a 30-year-old woman.

The vehicle that struck the woman was described as a possible mid-2000s black Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.

Fire officials responded to a possible hazmat situation at the postal office on Crenshaw Boulevard near 57th Street at around 1:26 p.m..

The initial report said some 20 people were feeling unwell after a gas line was possibly struck at a construction site nearby.

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s HazMat unit said its air monitoring readings turned out to be normal.

The six people who were evaluated at the post office declined to be taken to a hospital.

No fire officials or first responders were injured during the response.

Islah LA has fire and smoke damage, as well as hateful messages scrawled on its gates, after someone defaced the Islamic center on Saturday. Surveillance footage from the building shows someone outside the center’s fence torching some sort of material into the property.

“A sacred space, one that serves as a masjid, community center, and a school for our children, was violated,” the center said on its online fundraiser.

Islah LA is a center for community programs, prayer and civic engagement among the Muslim-American community.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were called to the area shortly after 9:30 a.m. for a report of a woman spray painting walls and throwing objects. As a result, one person was taken into custody for assault with a deadly weapon.

Police did not release the name of the person who was arrested.

“We just want a stop to it,” said Jihad Saafir Imam of Islah LA. “She’s put people in danger; we want a stop to it. We want to protect the community and make sure she gets the help that she needed.”

Branden Johnson, the son of Kevin Johnson, told NBC Los Angeles Wednesday that his father had lived on the streets periodically although he could have stayed with family and relatives. 

The elder Johnson was found dead in the Willowbrook neighborhood of South Los Angeles last month. Authorities also confirmed Johnson had been living in a homeless encampment at the time of his death.

The LA County medical examiner later ruled Johnson’s death a homicide, saying the former NFL player suffered “blunt head trauma and stab wounds.”  

The son, who called his father his “best friend,” said he received a call from a family member last month about a possible incident involving the elder Johnson.

“Nobody wants to get that call that your father is murdered,” Branden Johnson said, adding that he had to identify his father to authorities at the scene. 

What was more shocking, the son said, was his father’s death may be connected to three other homeless murders in the same area.

“It’s devastating just to know that there’s somebody out here doing this to these people,” he said.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department said the four murders, including that of Kevin Johnson, may be connected as they all happened in the same area during a three-month time frame between October 2025 and January 2026.

The younger Johnson said although he was too young to see his father play professionally, his father’s injuries forced him to stop playing football. 

The father-son duo spoke everyday, according to the son, although Kevin Johnson did not show signs of distress or struggle. 

“My dad wasn’t the type of person to let anybody know how he was really doing,” Johnson explained. “He just would make it seem like everything was OK.”

Although the 55-year-old’s life ended tragically, his son said his father was more than a man living in a homeless encampment.

“He was a loving man. He was a family man. He was a father, a friend, and all of the above,” he described. “He loved everyone around him and would give his shirt off his back just to make sure everybody else around him was OK.”

The son asked anyone with information to come forward and work with investigators to find the killer.

“I’ll miss him every day until I go,” he said.

After he was drafted in the fourth round by New England in 1993, Kevin Johnson went on to play for the Patriots, Vikings, Raiders and Eagles. Johnson finished with 43 tackles, including seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown in two years with the Eagles.

He played 15 games for Oakland in 1997.

Johnson later played in the Arena Football League for Orlando and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles native played collegiately at Texas Southern.

The four people were found dead in the Willowbrook neighborhood of South Los Angeles between October 2025 and January 2026, the sheriff’s department said.

As investigators were trying to determine whether the deaths were related, they discovered one of the victims was Johnson, a Los Angeles native who played in the NFL during the 1990s.

All four victims were unhoused at the time of their deaths, living in homeless encampments on East 120th Street near Central Avenue, according to the LASD.

The LA County medical examiner said two weeks ago that Johnson, 55, died from “blunt head trauma and stab wounds” after being found unconscious at the encampment.

Johnson’s son Branden Johnson issued a statement, saying his father’s homicide has left him and others with a huge void in their lives.

“My father’s death is a heartbreaking tragedy, especially because he was a constant presence in my life,” Branden Johnson said. “There was not a single day he didn’t call to check on me, asking if I worked out, if I prayed, how his granddaughter was doing, and reminding me how much he loved me and how proud he was. The absence of those daily calls has created an indescribable silence.”

The younger Johnson called his father “a loving, caring, and truly joyful man whose presence brought warmth to everyone around him.”

“He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and appreciated, never judging and always looking out for others,” Branden Johnson said. “Even through life’s difficulties, he held happiness in his heart and shared it freely with those he loved.

“My dad was selfless, loyal, and deeply cherished. His absence leaves a huge void, but his love, laughter, and spirit will live on through everyone whose life he touched.”

The sheriff’s department did not announce the identities of three other victims.

Homicide investigators are working closely with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to follow leads and track down a suspect or suspects, the sheriff’s department added.

Officers with Gardena police were chasing the black Chevy sedan when they noticed it was reported missing.

After a brief pursuit, the driver crashed the possible stolen car near the Adams Boulevard off-ramp on the northbound 110 Freeway, police said.

NewsChopper4 was overhead when someone was being transported, but it was not immediately clear whether the driver needed medical attention.

The off-ramp was temporarily closed during the investigation.

The shooting was reported in a residential area on Hobart Boulevard near 22nd Street at around 8:15 p.m. Sunday as a shooting victim called 911 and requested emergency services.

Police said the two victims, ages 19 and 25, were standing in front of the house when two suspects pulled up, got out of their car and fired their weapons.

After their bullets struck the victims multiple times, the suspects went back in their cars and ran away, the LAPD added.

One person died from gunshot wounds at the scene. Another person was injured and taken to a hospital in unknown but stable condition.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was gang related.

The cause of the shooting was under investigation.

The shooting was reported at about 3:50 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Figueroa and 120^th Streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. There, officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, surrounded by several people. Paramedics arrived at the scene and tended to the victim, who ultimately died of his injuries at the scene.

Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured the violence. In the video, two men exit the bar and appear to be arguing. The gunman leaves the area then returns, firing a single shot at the victim at close range.

LAPD said the shooting, which involved a 45 mm caliber gun, stemmed from a dispute inside the bar. It’s unclear what that dispute was over.

The suspected gunman remains on the loose. He was last seen walking eastbound on 120^th Street.

Police did not release the name of the victim. They described him as a man in his 40s, however.

A silver Honda Odyssey traveling on Western Avenue at 45th Place didn’t yield at an unmarked crosswalk and struck the victim last Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The driver did not stop or help the pedestrian, a 66-year-old male, who was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The suspect’s car was last seen traveling eastbound on 42nd Place from Western Avenue.

Motorists involved in collisions are reminded to pull over and stop when it is safe, notify emergency services and stay nearby to identify themselves, police said.

Pedestrians are also advised to use caution when near a roadway.

The police asked anyone with information to contact the department’s South Traffic Division Officer Lozada at (213) 677-9791.

The shooting was reported at 6:44 p.m. at a Louisiana Fried Chicken restaurant along Manchester Avenue, according to the LAPD.

The four victims were waiting for food at the fast-food restaurant when two men arrived on foot and began shooting, according to police.

One person, a 36-year-old man, died of his injuries. The three other victims were hospitalized in stable condition, according to the LAPD.

No arrests have been made. Police say the shooting suspects fled westbound in a vehicle.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the body was found shortly before 6 a.m. on the Metro A line train tracks. 

Police believe the victim may have possibly been struck by the train. 

The area around 41st Street and Long Beach Avenue has been closed off as the investigation continues. 

No further details were immediately available.
