See AllIndie games will only save us if anyone funds them
I dont want to berate their hard work but my guess is that publishers are looking for smaller teams (1-5) peeps that focus on either emotional narrative, unique mechanics and/or bold art style. Angel Engine has perhaps unique mechanics. It looks cool at face value but I can quickly see how, when the novelty subsides, there’s not much else there. This is I think in part what separates an audience from an investor/publisher; they HAVE to see beyond initial cadence and think long term otherwise theyd be out of bizz pretty fast. Its sorta like therapy in a sense; you have to learn to see beyond the initial affectual reaction.
Now, this is very much akin to the indie publishing bizz back in 2010-15 when indie meant small teams with bold ideas and not intermediate company structure with…weird ideas. The latter is surprisingly unlenient and currently a huge risk, perhaps it always was besides some few lucky years when the pandemic was in full bloom. The first tho is low cost, easy to steer and usually comes without logistic or beurocratic shenanigans which, in fairness, almost nobody except the biggest player really enjoy dealing with.
the chance of success or making bank is way lower there as well making it a much easier investment.
Today, a fun idea is not enough anymore and I think thats a good thing as it will, to my mind, lead to more authentic and personal experiences, something we’ve lost these past 5 years.
The rise of the ‘outsider AAA’ studio
I think Helldivers 2 from Sweden might qualify as well?
Epic layoffs are a bad sign, analyst says: 'If Fortnite can't make it, what chance do other games have?'
What I think is really messed up is that these neo liberals, who believes in free market and all the doodaas (Im just blatantly assuming Tim Sweeney is one such individual), have mostly had the creed in their cultural backbone as ”jobs are the only way to make your day”. And now….when push comes to shove, it seems that idea is worth nillnull.
So my take from this, one which I was already acutely aware of but is now on full display, is that these folks only care about themselves. Or are at least thick enough in their own lil head that they cant find creative solutions to problems they help create but sort of quietly washing their hands by invoking the utterly utterly stupifying age old adage ”its just bizz”.
Grow the F up and grow some EFFIN cojones bro! No, scratch that; go to therapy and grow some EFFIN empathy bro!
How a metalhead's high school doodles became a badass new Soulslike
Have fun with yer visual maximalism! Im gettin too old for these clichés. For the right audience Im sure its bangin’ tho.
Steam's exploding sales numbers aren't telling the whole story
Because they are part of why its become saturated. They are not taking their responsibility as the monopoly storefront proper. Plus 30% is a high cut! No matter how you churn and turn about it!
Also, ay bizz model in the industry, currently, is not just your problem. It is impossible to be fully autonomous about your bizz model today because there are too many hoops to jump through and these hoops are set by….you guessed it, the companies owning the storefronts!
The destruction of Sony's go-to remake studio is one of PlayStation's most embarrassing failures
Games do not have to cost more and more to make. This is a false narrative. Please refrain from using this scapegoat any longer.
The ideas need to be better, the ideas are what drives the cost. But new ideas are bad news to a control-freak. Im not saying thats what Sony is, Im saying thats what the bizz is about. Too much control-freakin’ on the basis of quarterly rapportin’ instead of risk taking & curiosity outside trends. Dont follow trends, create trends. How? Dig deep into your subconscious, deep & important ideas are not found on surface levels where analysis and intellect dwell. Divest the intellect some and invite the soul again.
