This is a pretty common sentiment from DSA/DSA-adjacent folks in NYC. If holding off on NYPD reform is a temporary strategic calculation, though, when is it actually time for the mayor to start "taking on the police?" (as Brent puts it)

I do think the left’s anger about Zohran’s approach to the police is understandable, there’s not a lot to love there. But I also think that he’s making the correct strategic call and that taking on the police right now would be a complete disaster for his agenda.

Speaking at the police academy in Nassau County, Trump claims Gov. Hochul and Mayor Mamdani have "fought like hell" against securing U.S. borders and tax cuts for seniors. Not really clear what he's referring to, since neither Hochul nor Mamdani can dictate federal policy.

New: Erica Landau, Mamdani ally Claire Valdez's chief of staff, called the mayor's renewed commitment to not defund the NYPD "unforgivable" in a tweet this week. Landau quickly deleted the tweet & then set her account to private when I asked for comment.
