    This paper outlines the issues associated with pipeline mapping and as-builting under hazardous conditions and inclement weather and how those situations can hinder the collection of accurate data. The paper then provides an overview the application of near target remote sensing and three trials that were conducted to evaluate this technology. Finally, the authors present the results of the third trial and compare the results of data collection to preliminary data collected from traditional methods. The authors content that near target remote sensing can be used as a tool by surveyor and other data collectors in place of traditional methods where hazardous conditions might impede data collection.

    The concept of the digital twin dates all the way back to the 1950’s when NASA, GE and other industrial manufactures started creating abstract digital models of equipment to model their performance in simulations and maintain a record of the asset through its life span. Over the years more and more industries have adopted the digital twin paradigm to improve tracability, maintenance, and analytics allowing for improved sustainment of the asset or equipment while reducing various risks identified during life cycle management. It has been found that collectively, the digital twin concept improves overall net present value of an asset. The oil and gas industry has slowly been adopting the digital twin paradigm of asset life cycle management over the past two decades with the focus on facilities. Recently, field trials were completed to test and evaluation workflows and sensor platforms for the creation a digital twin for pipelines. The trials resulted in highly accurate pipeline centerlines, weld locations, depth to cover and ditch geometry capture in digital formats. This paper describes the methodologies used, and the results of one real construction field trial and compares the traditional data collection methods for these attributes. The value of creating a pipeline digital twin at the time of construction in near-real-time is discussed with particular attention paid to the potential impact of life cycle and pipeline integrity.

    Abstract

    In the early phases of a pipeline project, the lack of data available for routing results in multiple routes being considered and interactions with land owners with only a general route. As a consequence, multiple survey programs are undertaken only to collect data that often is not being used, or site revisits are required to collect additional survey data. Repeated visits by survey crews to the field results in considerable cost and schedule delay to the project. A project was undertaken to reduce these costs and schedule impacts by replacing the need for survey work during FEED by utilizing remote sensing data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This paper outlines the methods for collection of High Density (HD) LiDAR and high resolution imagery and then using AI to automatically identify all above ground features. This technique has proven to provide data of sufficient accuracy and completeness to conduct Pre-FEED and FEED level routing and engineering of a pipeline project. When survey is required, it is only to collect below ground features and to collect or verify data in very specific detail. Additionally, when required for legal or engineering reasons, survey work can be conducted more efficiently by providing the crews with a field database of the features already captured and means for updating the database with the data they collect or verify.

    simple pass cards. This growth has of course resulted in greater acceptance of RFID technology and more standardization of
    process and systems as well as decreased per unit costs. The oil and gas industry is being exposed to the potential use of RFID technology, mostly through the safety and equipment inspection portion of construction management. However, the application of RFID technology is expected to expand to the material tracking and asset management realms in the near future.
    Integrating the information provided by RFIDs with EPCM project and owner/operator Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a logical next step towards maximizing the
    value of RFID technology. By linking assets tracked in the field during movement, lay-down and construction to a GIS, projects will have accurate, real-time data on the location of materials as well as be able to query about those assets after commissioning. This same capability is being modified for post-commission use of RFID with facility GISs. This paper outlines how existing GISs used during the EPCM phases and those employed after
    commissioning can display, utilize and analyze information provided by RFID technology.

Papers and research covering this topic as it relates to specific industries or applications such as municipal and environmental Geographic Information System (GIS) projects can also be found. However, few papers have been presented on this topic in relation to pipeline engineering projects, and in particular, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM). This paper will introduce this topic to the EPCM project manager through an overview of the measures of failure, their causes, the key enablers of success of a GIS project in EPCM world, and conclude with a synopsis of how the EPCM project manager can ensure the success of geomatics or GIS activities on their project.
