Nominated for 3 Oscars for Half Nelson, La La Land and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live 2024
Canadian actor Ryan Gosling’s latest film is Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The space movie is based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel of the same name, but it is not Gosling’s first time leaving earth in a film. He portrayed Neil Armstrong in First Man (2018) written by Josh Singer and James R. Hansen and directed by Damien Chazelle. He had previously worked with Chazelle on La La Land (2016) starring opposite Emma Stone in the LA-set musical movie and earning one of his three Oscar nominations for his role as Sebastian.
Gosling’s most recent Oscar nomination was for his portrayal of Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) opposite Margo Robbie. He brought his Kenergy to a whole musical number, “I’m Just Ken,” which he performed at the 2024 Oscars. His first nomination was for his role in Half Nelson (2006), in which he plays a high school teacher named Dan Dunne who does drugs.
Raised in Cornwall, Ontario, Gosling and his sister Mandi performed in dance competitions, and the actor pivoted that to The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in which he appeared alongside Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. He was on the show from 1993 to 1995. As a teenager in the 1990s, he appeared in shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps.
Early standout films for Gosling were Remember the Titans (2000) in which he played a small role as a member of Coach Herman Boone’s (Denzel Washington) football team and then The Notebook (2004) in which he played brooding heartthrob Noah based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. Gosling and costar Rachel McAdams famously did not get along making The Notebook, but then sparked an off-screen romance following their work on the film.
Following his first Oscar-nominated role in Half Nelson, Gosling appeared in Blue Valentine (2010) alongside Michelle Williams, Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) which marked his first collaboration with Emma Stone and The Ides of March (2011) in which he appeared alongside George Clooney. The Big Short (2015), directed by Adam McKay, marked a reunion with Steve Carell after Crazy, Stupid, Love. He starred alongside Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys (2016) and Harrison Ford in Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
He will next be seen in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter coming 2027 and in Tough Guys alongside Will Ferrell. Gosling struck up a romance with Eva Mendes after they appeared in two films together: Drunk History Christmas (2011) and The Place Beyond The Pines (2012). He has hosted Saturday Night Live
